LED headlight bulb replacement

Hey guys, I was curious if anyone has done an led headlight replacement. I think my ballasts are going bad because the headlights were weak and I replaced the bulbs and they are still weak.

I replaced my fog lights with some 9005 led bible from superbrightleds at 2250 lumens and I am super pleased. Came across these and thought they looked promising.

I believe I will have to tap into the wire before the harness for the stock ballast to wire them in, I will also need to ditch the dust cap.

I was wondering if anyone has gone this route and if they know how sealed the housing is with the dust cap off. I would assume well since the bulb seals it's self and the dust cap protected whatever that silver box is that mounts to the back of the bulb.

Anyone know how bright these guys are as well?

Thanks!

I'd stick to HIDs for the time being. Our projectors are still coveted as one of the best bi-xenon HID projectors. LEDs will get better when there are better projector housings meant for them.

If you're willing to spend the money and guinea pig, then please do so and we'd definitely appreciate pictures and a report

lol i am thinking about it, since they do have a 30 day money back return policy.

so if i were to stick to an hid system, what do people get? whats a good dependable hid kit and how do you wire it? tapping into the wires before the stock ballast like i would for the led? or is there a proper harness, that would be the main thing driving me to stick with hids.

OEM ballasts on the 3G TL is actually one of the more dependable ones. You'll pay a little more versus Morimoto (TheRetrofitSource's house brand) but I think it's worth and if/when my ballasts go out, I'm sticking with OEM (Matsushita in this case). ANy of my other cars and retrofits, I go with Morimoto XB35 ballasts though.

Also in your case, OEM provides ease of installation with the proper pigtails already there.

get HID's from theretrofitsource, they are b/w 35-90 dollars a bulb for some great ones. I a lot of people love the OSRAM CBI's that are $180 and the Phillips 81522+ for $90

His bulbs are fine, it's the ballasts he's looking to replace. Think he found $150 a ballast for OEM ones.

Yea I thought it was the bulbs so I got the morimotos 5500 and when I plugged them in they were no where near as bright as they should be. I'm assuming after 11 years the ballasts are going bad.

you get what you pay for brutha.

250 for LED bulbs whose output might not be what you want

300 for two new ballasts.

$50 difference. Too rich? 10 less Starbucks in the morning

So I guess now the question I should be asking is, does anyone have a reliable source for the stock ballasts? The one I found was eBay...

No worries. Trust me, I'm a LED fanatic as well but I don't think aftermarket LED offerings are "there" just yet. There still needs to be a bit of R&D for proper applications of LEDs to get the best bang for your buck. For now, HIDs are the reliable and affordable choice.

Woah Wojo! That's actually what I wanted to do. I drove the 2015 tlx and its led headlights are what inspired me to want led headlights for my own. Please send a link to where you got those beauties. I bet they look sick at night.

That setup wojo has requires extensive modifications and plenty of man hours to accomplish.

Your car will be out of commission for a few days, maybe even weeks, unless you got a spare set of headlights and skills as well as knowledge to DIY.

What kind of bulb do you use for fogs? I'm still looking for a LED replacement for my fogs ( 06 Base )

It is possible to do them but a lot of time and money is needed. Im thinking about posting a DIY for everyone who wants to drop 1200 + and do it themselves

You are correct the led heatsink will not fit behind the dust cap. The only way would be to leave it off and maybe through some silicone grease around the bulb to seal it in the housing, or more permanent option would be silicone caulk. Not sure if I want to go that route though

I upgraded from halogens to LEDs in my Accord but aftermarket LED lighting, while better than halogens, still can't match HIDs. IMO, better to bite the bullet and replace the ballasts if need be.

I agree, I mean it's not the leds, there are leds that blow the best hids out of the water, the issue seems to be housing, which were designed for hids. The new cars with the led headlights work phenomenal. Guess I sound just buy a 2015 tlx haha

I would like to see LEDs blow the best HIDs out of the water...I've seen a couple LED projectors and so far have been good, but not great.

While LED headlights look cool. HID projectors are still the best to see further.

Most LED headlights today have multiple LEDs Which can be great for curved headlights and having a wider visibility range. Also they can give a sharp line that doesn't blind on coming traffic above that line which technically is more unsafe to other drivers especially coming over a hill or driving a lifted vehicle without adjusting headlights down)because LEDs actually can cause temporary blindness or blank spot in someone's vision as they are technically brighter and more efficient lumens/per watt.
But HIDs aren't far behind on efficiency. But the reason HIDs are better for distance or to penetrate Fog better than LEDs. Is that LEDs don't output much light above that sharp line.
What makes HIDs better for distance is the fact that They produce a more soliid
