Leather Quality

I've read people posting messages and even photographs regarding the (poor) quality leather used in TL. I tested drove a TL with black leather seat. Aside from the wringles, the leather on the left side of the driver seat near the door already shows a few cracks in it. Even the salesman admitted that the TSX has better leather.

Wonder if this (cracked leather) is an isolated case, or is it common on all TLs? Given that the TL is a technological marvel, it is a pity that things like poor quality leather can be a show stopper for a lot of potential buyers.

Hope ACURA get the message.

Nothing wrong with mine after 5 months. No cracks, and wrinkles are normal for good leather. I have always had leather seating and this ranks among the best. Of course you have to condition it regularly.

I've had my TL since the end of Oct. 03 and I have some mild wrinkles. When I was at the auto show I looked at a lot of cars with leather seats. What I found was that all of them had some degree of wrinkles. I thought that the TL had more wrinkles than the others in general. The reasons for this I believe to be that the TL's side bolsters' leather is somewhat thin and smooth. Other cars when you look at them closely, including Merc., BMW and Audi also had the wrinkles, however, because of the textured leather they used rather than smooth leather, the wrinkles did not show that much.

Even in the auto show where thousands of people had gone in and out of the cars repeatedly, there were no cracks in the leather, only wrinkles.

Mine is fine too. 3 months and no wrinkles as yet. Actually I thought this to be very good leather quality. I think there are multiple vendors supplying leather to Acura. One of them is BAD QUALITY.

My seats have mild wrinkles but I think it looks fine. In an earlier thread, someone posted a definition of the two kinds of leather that I found helpful. Something about the difference between painted leather and tanned leather. Sorry that I don't remember which thread so that I may quote it.

BMW's "textured leather" is pretty tough and unattractive compared to the TL's...I have a 325i now and am considering changing to a TL (2 test drives so far). Plus, I paid through the nose for my precious leather (CAD$2400/US~1500).

Most 3 series owners take the "leatherette" (or as most people call it, vinyl) which is free, and does a very convincing imitation of the real thing.

The leather is fine in my car 3,000 miles and it still looks like new. My fat butt hasn't made it look any worse.

You have imagined something that wasn't there. Those were wrinkles, not cracks.

Does leather wrincle happen to TL w/6MT?
I just put 600 miles as of today and already have wrincles at the left side of passenger seat. I could be wrong but the seat for 6mt is more sever condition than 5AT.....I'll take it to the dealer next week....

Not sure how different transmissions could affect leather quality.

Mine looks fine too after supporting my 210 lb. ass day in and day out for the last nearly 5 months.

The small wrinkles that I have are on the seat bottom's side bolsters not the perforated inserts that you sit on.

TorontoTL,

Every aspect of my seats look fine. It could be how people sit on them as well I guess. I try to sit center on the seat.

svtmike,

I weigh in at 275lbs, I can almost hear the car sigh "thank you" when I get out!

I may have my sister race the car for me this month, she weighs 95lbs, I'd get about a tenth and a half faster letting her drive!

Me too. Remember its real leather not BMW leatherette that you can shrink with a blowtorch. Its perfectly normal IMO.

As my brother in law explained it, vinyl manufactured to look like leather. Standard on all of the cheaper models I believe.

Fake water resistant leather. While seeming cheesy, they're actually good to have in very wet climates like the northwest where you can be frequently wet getting into the car.

Leatherette is a lame name though...sounds like something from QVC.

I think you have to be careful about sitting on Leatherette (tm) seats if you are wearing a Pleather (tm) jacket. My friend's cousin did that once and spontaneously combusted.

Everybody who has it is too embarrassed to complain about the $30,000 car they got with vinyl seats.

I'm starting to get some wrinkles around my eyes, but I'm gonna turn 40 in April, so I guess that's normal. My skin's not too leathery because I basically stopped hanging out in the sun as much once I met my wife (she's a doctor), and I always use sunblock now. Wait, are we talking about the same thing?

That, and the BMW leatherette is quite convincing (minus the real leather smell).

the leather is a soft leather. for some reason, some people (like myself) are getting creases that should not be there. after 3,000 it looks like 30,000 of wear. however, not everyone has the problem or it doesn't bother everyone. the quality isn't bad, but this problem could pop up for you.

I have some wrinkles on my passenger and rear passenger seat. After I a complained about it, the dealership has agreed to replace both cushions. You can see the pics of the seats in MY PHOTO GALLERY.
Acura needs to be more consistent on the quaulity of their leather seats.

Hi, bollywood21:

Does that mean that they will replace your entire seats or just cushion part? If just the cushions, how do they do it? I have the butt print problem. I am convinced that it is lack of paddings, not leather.

Would love to bollywood, but the Gallery still ain't working. Your pics were the ones I routinely looked at in anticipation of my new Deep Green Pearl arrival coming toward the end of this month.

I've had my TL 3 weeks and I noticed wrinkles in the leather of the bolster of the driver's seat. The 00TL I traded in had 53,000 miles and seats looked new and I never used any conditioner. The 00TL had the parchment interior. The ebony is probably worse about this.
