Question Leather in '04 TL

Several people have posted on Temple of VTEC that the leather wrinkles too easily. Is there any truth to that?

I thought this would be an issue based on my early observtions of the first TL's on the dealer lot. My Ebony/6MT/Navi has 500 miles and the driver and passenger seat bolsters are very wrinkled as well as the seat cusion issues mentioned before. I have one thing to say- Cheap materials! Every person who has a TL should complain about this issue. I was very excited about this car as I owned two Acuras in the past and two MBZ (o problems) in betwwen them and the TL. I must say that I regret not buying the MBZ as the interior materials are far superior even in the C coup which is less than the TL with leather. Does Acura even test cars for duability prior to release? I also agree that the foam in the seats is of poor quality. I think Acura caters to their marketing reseach too much and does not use common sense sometimes. They should make Lazy boy chairs with Acura emblems. I'm going to meet with a factory rep about these issues as well as the dirt under my paint in multiple locations, my seat heater issues, etc. That's my rant.

I have a very nice Italian leather sofa. It has feathery soft cushions and is covered in glove-soft leather ("buckskin"). Yes, it stretches, wrinkles, and leaves "butt prints" - but I have owned it since 1997 and it's still going strong. No rips or tears (except from where my cat clawed the back of it). This couch was just about the most expensive model they had, specifically because of the soft leather; we could have had the same couch covered in cheaper, stiffer leather, and saved several hundred dollars. But this was so much better to sit on that we gladly paid the extra money (and waited while they built it for us).

Bottom line, I wouldn't be so quick to call the leather in the TL "cheap" just because it's soft and stretches/wrinkles easily.

Just because leather is soft does not mean that it will wrinkle. I have had many leather sofas with premium leather that do not have this issue. believe me my family is in the furniture MFG business. The TL leather appers to be treated to be soft on the surface only. Squeeze your leather and watch the paper like film on the surface. True soft leather is soft all the way through. Look at the leather on the RX330... Quality foam also plays a role here. Remember- soft does not always mean high quality, although your sales person would like you to think that. I have owed many "soft leather jackets that have never really wrinkled for years and have seen friends with "cheap soft leather" that looks like "cheap soft leather" after a few months.

the leather on the TL is of high quality. Try the leather in the RSX and tell me the TL leather is cheap.

Some people seem to be having problems with the leather. I have 1100 miles on my 04TL now, and I'd say the seats still look fine. Sure you can tell that they have been sat in, but that was true with other cars I've owned that had leather seats.

Comparing to an even lower grade leather is not a good compaarison nor does it make the TL leather a high quality leather or one acceptable for the price of the car.

I don't have the new TL, but I just bought a 2004 Lexus with premium leather, I guess the leather in the Lexus is better than the one found in the TL, the Lexus leather wrinkle very very easily, the car now has about 2000 miles on it, and I have noticed wrinkles in the driver's seat when the car only has about 300 miles on it, so I assume wrinkle in the leather doesn't mean that the leather is of poor quality.

The wrinkling in my seat is there but seems to improve overnight. I'll provide pix when I get a chance.

Every car I 've owned had leather seats. The better the quality usually showed more wrinkles which is normal. If you use saddle soap or The Tannery regularly it gets better as it ages. As long as you don't let the leather dry out it should be fine.

Huh? I had M-B's before my TL-S and MDX and am now driving a Volvo and a BMW. No car before or after my Acura's had leather show wear as badly. Don't forget the outbreak of "fuzzies" that plagued the perforated leather either.

Little white hairs that poked out through the perforations in the leather after the seats had been used for about a month. It was especially noticable on the Ebony interiors. The cure was either the dealer shaving the hairs or replacing the seat covers.
