keyfob trick, I love it

Okay, first of all, I want to know the limit of my keyfob, it doesn't seem too big, cause I was around 30-40 feet away from my tl, and the keyfob didn't work. Whats the distance you guys are measuring?

Second of all, this is cool, there is a trick to make your keyfob work from longer distance.

Ready for this?

Here it is. Place your keyfob, the lock button side, on your throat, and now try it, still doesn't work? now, open your mouth, and then try it..... ta da

This has worked for me, give me some responses on if it works for you.

I'm not sure how to do it. Can you please post a picture of yourself doing this?

Thanks,

Rick

I haven't tried this and most likely I won't either. I'm really wondering why you did and how you found out something like that? Just doesn't seem like a normal thing to do.

badboy cannot reply to your postings. The guys with the nets saw him doing this in a parking lot, gathered him up, and transported him to the loonie bin, where he now resides without access to the internet.

My keyfob works at a distance of 120 feet in an open parking lot. Also works from inside stores from at least 40-50 feet, through walls and windows.

Unlocks doors, trunk, and opens windows and moonroof from all these distances.

haha

okay, the way I found out about this is when a friend of mine did it to his car. At that point I was a skeptic and laughed it off thinking, "yeah, sure".

I never even thought about trying the trick until one day, when I parked at work, and was heading in the building, I stoped in my tracks, and I knew I didn't lock the doors, so I just pressed the lock button on the keyfob, lights didn't go on, then I aimed the keyfob at the car and then pressed the button( yeah, I know the aiming doesn't do anything), still didn't work. Then I thought about what my friend did, and i thought to myself why not give it a try. so I took the keyfob and placed it touching my throat, ( the keyfob perpendicular to your neck, almost like aiming with your keyfob, the lock button being the end closest to the throat) and I opened my mouth and then pressed the lock button, and guess what, the lights came on and it locked.

sorry, no pics yet, don't think I will either, its pretty straightforward, for me atleast.

Try it and share your experience.

Thanks

This is an old trick that works very well. Touching the key fob transmitter to your chin while pressing the button somehow seems to make your body into a better transmission antenna. I haven't figured out why.

I've been doing this for almost 10 years now, and seen others doing it as well in parking lots.

The problem now is that I used to do this to help me find my car in large parking lots. With the whimpy-a$$ little "chirp" that the TL sends out for confirmation, my fob's transmitting range is greater than the TL's chirp audible range.

Actually, putting the key fob under your chin elongates the range capability of all key fobs. Reason is that it uses your body as a antennae to increase range. Works same way with my 530i as well as my '99 TL.

Yeah? Well I'm still betting that the first time you tried it you looked around to be sure nobody was watching. Admit it!

I thought the "hold to your chin" was common knowledge? It actually significantly increases your range.

And aliens also make crop circles...

Why wouldn't holding the keyfob in YOUR HAND result in the same "body transmitter" physics?

Depends on how many metal fillings you have in your teeth. If you have full braces, you can get maybe 500 feet range, but if your mommy finds out you're playing with her keyfob, she'll spank your butt.

my guess would be because you're very close to the skeleton (dense) and hence your entire frame is an antenna.

<---googling for the REAL answer 'cause I want to know.

Wait until you develop a huge tumor in your chin from the radio waves... then we'll see who's laughing!

now guys, i was told this by my friend who is an electrical engineer .... but it actually is your brain that acts as a booster for the transmitter. the electrons in the human brain somehow amplifies the signal. oh well, just my .02, NO FLAMES PLEASE!

Yeah, I used to do this with my old A4 and it definitely worked. It also works as a wife-repellent because once she saw me doing it, she hasn't looked at me the same way ever since! As for getting a tumor with this trick, you think we'll fare any better with bluetooth, 8 speakers, a big-ass LCD monitor and more electronics than you can think of once you get INSIDE the TL!!

Are you guys serious? I need to give this a try on our Nissan van. The FOB works only from inside the van.

No question it works. I've used it on my last 3 cars and each has had its range significantly increased. Go figure.

I felt like an idiot doing it but it really does work. Over twice the distance to open everything. If anyone was around I think I would just wait until I was closer.

In reality you are creating a simple phased array transmitter. In stead of transmitting in a spherical pattern, it can be aimed in the desired direction. I believe he must have to look directly at the car. If he is more than 23.6degrees off axis, I do not think it will work. This will be improved if the user has braces, large amount of crown/bridge work. ;o)

Also note that people that can do this, can receive radio signals when eating a acid type of fruit (orange) and hold one hand in the air and the other in their nose.

Yeah Using your body as a antenna - Kinda of like when your trying to get that reception on your FM radio and your holding the Antenna wire and you think you have gotten a good signal. But once you release it - FUZZZZZZZZZZ.

In addition to placing the fob underneath your chin, if you open your mouth you get an extra 50 feet

I was told and im pretty sure this is the right answer but your skull acts as an antenna. In the past where some patients had alot of metal fillings and braces there were reported cases of the patients being able to hear radio broadcasts .

I'm just glad that the XM antenna is a square, flat puck. Sticking that AM antenna up my ass all these years to get better reception really was uncomfortable.

Since you guys have already discovered it, I suppose it's OK to let you all in on the secret...

The discovery of this phenomenon came out of the faked NASA moon landings of the 60's and 70's. The set directors needed to control a number of the "objects" from a distance, and devised remote controls for this purpose. One technician inadvertantly scratched his chin with a transmitter and noticed this behavior. The rest is history.

BTW, the reason you want to open your mouth is to create a resonance of the FM signal. Furthermore, sticking your tongue out allows for finer adjustment of the modulation.

Thank you.
