Just Got Another Offer

$5,000 firm. I politely told them, not happening. People religiously offer to buy my car because it's a 6MT, even though it has 336K miles, about to be 17 years old, and by virtue of the fact that I've rebuilt the darn thing over the last 5 years:

Timing Belt/Water pump
Clutch and Flywheel
Clutch Master Cylinder
Clutch Slave Cylinder
Clutch Lines & Hoses
Brake and clutch pedal covers
Motor mounts
Valves adjusted
Rear stabilizer bar end links, bushings, and brackets
Lower Control Arm Bushings including the compliances
Rear lower control arms
Ball joints - upper & lower
CV Driveshafts
Spark plugs
Battery cables
All Hoses including brake lines
Horns
Headlights and ignitor
Navigation DVD unit rebuilt
CD Player rebuilt
Bluetooth/HFL module
PCV Valve
Brake light switch
Bulbs in the Steering wheel and around Nav screen
Glovebox trunk switch
Front seat leather
Accelerator Sensor
Hood struts
Driver's door seal
Exhaust System Flex Pipe
Center Console Lid
Trunk seal
Power steering pump
Steering Rack (& Pinion)
Front stabilizer bushings
Front Stabilizer Links
Subframe mounts
Front right and Left rear door actuators
Shift knob
Steering Wheel

Front & Rear struts (shock & spring assemblies)
Front & Rear Brakes & calipers
Driver's door pin switch
Driver's door seal
Radiator
Tail-light LED panels
Roof XM antenna
Oxygen Sensors
Hood release cable
Fuel pump assembly
Donut Spare Tire
Emergency Brake shoes
A/C Compressor-7 yrs ago
Added backup camera
Added DRL module
Replaced Side Mirrors w/'07-08's

It's also the rarest combination of colors, Nav, and 6MT for '04/5. Barely a couple of hundred were made exactly like it,
and I can still do 0-60 in less than 6 seconds!

Would you sell this car if it were yours?

I said no to a $15,000 offer for my TL. There's a member here who just sold his immaculate 05 6MT for $15,000 (same combo as yours). I don't know all of his specific details, his TL is as clean as mine. If I owned your TL, I'd accept the offer.

So, all of what you listed becomes someone else's benefit once the 2022 Type-S is released and you purchase?

Or will this 3G TL become a project car?

I sold my '05 this summer for about that amount.....but.....I hadn't done nearly the level of rebuild you have done. If I had gotten to all of the major maintenance it needed, no way I would have let it go for that price. But...knowing I was still on the factory struts, bushings, and clutch...it was just a matter of time before a large investment was needed to keep it on the road.

Meh. Accept $5k, spend $35K for a newer car. Hell no.

Not a chance. Aside from the normal wear and tear expenses I don't see the need to take some cash and then try and find a suitable replacement without coming out of pocket.

I just got another Type S (a 2008) to go along with my 2007.. but the 2008 is that coveted 6MT. I drive it VERY rarely, maybe once a week. I've had the 08 6MT roughly a month...And I have come out from wherever I was to a note on my windshield with a phone number and "possibly interested in selling" message. 4 times...I've yet to get an offer on one these notes though. And I've maybe had these notes on my 07 Type S auto 2 times in over close to 3 years. Are people really looking inside my car? Damn tint needs to be darker then 20% I guess lol. But I get it, I looked hard for mine for close to a year...

Sorry, I seriously doubt any 15 year old 2005 TL, 6MT or otherwise, sold for anything more than eight, maybe nine grand; fifteen grand? Not happening.

You could ask the man himself if you don't believe me. https://acurazine.com/forums/3g-tl-p.../#post16663028

As for myself, I've been offered anywhere from 12-15K numerous times and I've declined. There are members here who can vouch my statement, including those that threw the offer.

Remember, you can't compare a pristine condition 6MT to a well used one. I don't blame @numairh for selling not a penny less than 15K. Good luck trying to find another 3rd gen like ours. It will come at a cost, that's for sure.

Nope, sorry, not buying; I don't care how slammed and mint the car is, if someone offers you 12K plus, take the money and run.

I see a kind of weird...dichotomy with the 3G TL ownership and market. Some cars that are "adult-owned" where it's either well-kept OEM or slight tastefully modded...that's as close to stock/new as possible and is really a very practical (but still fairly true to what Acura intended off the showroom floor) car that still looks great. And then there are cars that are owned by a younger generation (I see more and more older teens and early 20s kids posting/buying/modding these cars now) where it's either just a everyday "beater" like any other rando car....OR it's someone like @04WDPSeDaN linked where the young person is either financially able to or simply pours all their time/paycheck into the car and does everything to the max and may be modded well beyond what some may feel comfortable with. And fixes every thing and wants to change/"upgrade" everything they can

Seems like then buyers are either...someone who wants a 'normal' used car who sees a 10yr+ car (has no real knowledge of 3G TL platform) as costing way too much for a "pristine" 3G TL....OR the buyer specifically wants/knows the platform and is willing to pay way more than what avg Joe would pay..hence the 10k+ price tag.

I respect your opinion, but we will agree to disagree at this point. Best of luck with your TL.

DMZ with the amount of work you’ve done to keep it looking and running pristine I wouldn’t sell it for 5k. My two cents.

i wouldnt sell it. i get people asking to buy my car all the time. they ask me at the dunkin donuts, when i get my yearly inspection done, and even in random parking lots. its not for sale
ive dropped at least 5k on maintenance within the past 2 years. not as much work as you have done but i didnt drop that kind of money for no reason

professionally ceramic coated
new optima battery
new denso alternator
new oem oil pan
new radiator
new driver side master window switch
new driver locks (kept freezing in the winter)
headlights resealed
timing belt service
spark plugs
new ps pump
new brakes
new starter
pcv vavlve

probably gonna move onto suspension next. its getting to that point where everythings gotta break at least once. the oil leaks were the biggest pain in the ass. but yeah shes a keeper

i feel you OP, its not for sale!

Agreed, looking at the available cars currently on the market, of course with manual transmissions, the options are exceedingly limited. If my car was stolen or totaled today, I'd possibly look for a CPO 2018 BMW 340i, or maybe hold out for the 2022 VW GTI or Golf-R, but beyond that, getting back into another 3G TL 6MT would be my only real option.

You did say you wanted the TLX Type-s, so your budget is about 55K?

I don't understand your point..

That's not until next Spring at the earliest, so if I were to sell now, tell me what I'm supposed to do until then.

Sheesh. My 05 MT is super clean and nobody ever offers me anything! Just coming up on 100K mi too. But I understand what DMZ is saying. 5K isn't enough especially when nothing out there really moves me to want a new car. Probably drive this thing until it falls apart and then just get some basic car after that. Nothing without an MT is going to be of any inspiration to me so I might as well get something cheap and reliable. I just can't see spending big money on some new car with an AT or worse a CVT. Sadly cars are really not about the joy of driving anymore at least as far as I am concerned.

OK---
If it was MINE, I would, but not for $5K. Maybe ask $6500...
BUT, I have too many as it is, according to the Boss.
Now, if I was YOU, I wouldn't until I was ready to pick up something new--it will be worth $5K for a long time.

Kind of off topic, but people have always tried to buy my old 2001 Camry from me. Even as it sits in front of my childhood home with a blown engine, people still inquire about it on a monthly basis it seems. Weird. Only car I've owned that people looked at that way.

I know the feeling. My current Accord does seem to draw the same attention (to a lesser extent) and I guess the TLs are the same way.

hey gg, how you been? And I agree with here, you have a lot invested in this car and it’ll keep going, unless you’re done with it because you’re tired of it, stick with it.

I have been through this, I can find anything reasonably priced that I’m willing to replace the TL with.

Adobeman, I still use your Adobeman DVDA GUI. Great program!!

My '05 6MT, ~130k miles. Gotta fix a few items when I get around to it, A/C compressor and condenser, black wrap on door/window trim, and driver's seat bottom leather. XM receiver went out but don't XM account. Probably drive it for another 100k-150k miles. About the only two new Honda cars I'd consider if I was looking now for be a Accord Sport 2.0T 6MT (which are almost impossible to find now) or perhaps a Civic Si or Type-R.

Yeah, I'm at the point of needing the door and window trim as well; is there a standard re-wrap fix, or do you just buy new trim pieces?

I'm gonna rewrap them in some glossy black vinyl wrap that I'll order off Amazon.

There's a good writeup here on rewrapping the trim.

If I put that amount of work into it, then hell no. However I am looking to sell my 04MT 190,000 miles in the near future, and would be happy to get 5k!

I wouldn't have taken 5k either after the amount of TLC that's been put into it. Interesting to see everyone's offers on their cars though. I've only received one on my TL-S, offered 15k strangely enough. This was like a month after i got it lol

don’t feel too bad I don’t get any either... other than the dealership saying their used car inventory is low and need cars JUST LIKE MINE!!
actually I did have one mechanic at Acura tell me that if I’m willing to sell it he would be really interested, but that’s the only instance I had.

I would probably sell my 07 CBP type s with 225k miles on it if I got a good offer. The car is in great condition but since covid happen and with the wife working from home. I have a 3 vehicle rotation now lol. May put it up for sale since I could just drive the wife’s RAV4 adventure and my truck if she ever needs her RAV4. But I always change my mind when I drive the type S.

actually I did have one mechanic at Acura tell me that if I’m willing to sell it he would be really interested, but that’s the only instance I had.
Yeah I don't think people in the "car community" where I'm at really know what my car is lol they're all younger kids that typically only drive Z's, Challengers and Mustangs and stuff; usually V6 ones at that lol and the other side of said community have higher end stuff like NSX's, C8's, GT500's etc. There's not much in between here. Not to mention I only know of maybe like 2 or 3 other members on here that are in my area; only one of them being a 6MT like mine.

You live in a very youthful and vibrant part of the country, in my neck of the woods, beige Camry, silver corollas or dark blue Hyundai SUVs rule.
Anyways, I think the biggest thing preventing the TL from being even greater is the fwd/torque steer. I really like the seating position, I find the car is comfortable ( roads in my area are fairly smooth though ) the manual is really very satisfying, it pulls nicely to red line and I find the power is adequate. Newer performance cars have so much power, you don’t get the thrill of rowing through the gears up to redline without getting well into the 3 digits speed wise.

Yeah that's one of my few complaints about the car; the torque steer is abysmal. Need to get an aftermarket torque dampener of some kind to try and somewhat remedy that. Also the rev hang is a bit annoying at points as well; but I know a tune after a few bolt ons will solve that.
