Just curious rebuild cost?

what would be a good guesstimate to rebuild the motor and manual transmission in a 3rd gen tl.

No extra mods just back to oem off the show room floor condition.

nothing is wrong with mine it is just a curiosity question. A friend of mine has been looking for one and he has found a few with super high mileage. which is what brought up the question and i had no idea what to tell him.

Should have included that in the original post.

however; these motors last a very long time provided proper maintenance, ie: oil changes.

unless the motor has something wrong with it internally; warped heads, bent rods, etc there isnt a need to rebuild the engine

lol oh my. no the extra info wasn't really relevant to my original post. and yes I agree the motor and trannys are next to bullet proof and very reliable for the long haul. I have no plans to rebuild mine. BUT my original question still stands.
what would be a good guesstimate to rebuild the motor and manual transmission in a 3rd gen tl?

Find out how much an Acura dealer would charge, then deduct 70% and that should be your answer on how much a local mechanic would charge.

there wouldnt be a need to; unless internal damage.

and yes; i think your extra info was pertinent to the thread.
if your friend is picking up a TL; there isnt a need to rebuild for a high mileage motor.

The engine is the least of your problems with high mileage, I think pretty much everything on the car will fall apart or break before theres a need to rebuild the engine.

I'd say the price of a rebuild for a high mileage motor is $0 dollars.

For a transmission rebuild prepare to drop anywhere from 1300-1800. That's what other members have said in other threads.

I have no idea what it would cost to rebuild it, I've always done my own.

Assuming a very basic rebuild:

Rings $300

Rod and main bearings $150

A light hone assuming cylinders don't need to be bored $100

Polish the crank assuming it doesn't need to be ground $50

New oil pump optional $100??

Misc gaskets and hardware $300

I can't remember what people charge for assembly. I've never put one together without blue printing and weighing the bearings so if it ever comes apart again ill be able to measure wear and/or weight loss on every part.

Really that's about it for the bottom end but it could need to be bored, it could need pistons, it might need to be align bored, you might need to grind the crank, resize the rods, its a good idea to replace rod bolts, balance if you swap pistons or do any work to the bottom end other than polishing the crank, etc.

It can vary wildly. Some engines you throw in a set of rings and bearings and a light hone and you're back on the road. Some require a lot more. I would say $1k for a basic refreshening where you install the heads and all of the other crap. $3k for a blueprinted professional rebuild job with mostly new parts, that price could even include valve guides and seals.

I'm just throwing out numbers, I would call a local machine shop to find out.
