I'm with you. I really like the 3G headlights as is. They are a marvel engineering feat for 10 year old technology. They are among the top 5 headlight designs out there and most people would envy them on their cars.
But what if you saw the headlights once they were done? Might come out really nice! I think it would give the car a sleek updated appearance. I'm sure nearly everyone would think your car was a better version of a TLX. The reason I'm not going for it is that it's just not worth the energy and effort for me. At this stage I'm looking to a next car and this is stuff I'll look for built in. Perhaps years ago when I was into heavy mods that I could enjoy a few years, I think I definitely would have tried this.

Hell ya. Tesla is definitely a contender.......errr. in maybe 5yrs, lol. 100k is a BIT out of my budget. Haha. Gotta step up to that I guess.
For now something in the $45k ballpark with a manual and I don't mind 2nd hand this time, just low miles. E92 M3? Hmm. Or maybe I'll stretch the budget $15k more and buy my dream, 911 Carerra S. Now that is a leap over a 3GTL.
And I'll forgive it if it doesn't have LED headlights.

I would much rather have an LED behind a projector (like on the Infiniti Q50, or even the Toyota Corolla), rather than the Jewel Eye setup (I'm not really a fan of the Jewel Eyes). That way, I wouldn't change the look of the 3G, I would get a longer-lasting light source, without having to worry about warm-up/cool-down times, and I would actually be able to flash my high-beams in the day. Also, if my alarm were to go off, I wouldn't have to worry about my headlights taking a big hit from all the flashing.
It would still be expensive for the LEDs alone, and a pain to get all the wiring and optics correct.

Something I've been pondering is using the space to the sides of the main projectors for a DRL mod. eBay merchants sell 1 inch diameter lenses that magnify(collinate?) the light output from individual LEDs, so 4-5 of these lenses in two rows (above/below the chrome bar) could create an interesting effect. Or it could look horrible! Thoughts?

^^Meh, I mean maybe I shouldn't knock it before seeing but I'd think that would look pretty cheap. If anything, that one that looks like a projector lens may work.
I can see how some people may not like the Jewel eye look, it's different. Some people don't like that dotted LED look for tail lights either, but I personally like that look. But are you sure you have seen Jewel Lights in person? For instance the way it looks on the RLX is 100x better than it looks in photos. The MDX ones are OK but don't look as nice as the RLX ones IMO.

Even an older and lower power Cree led like a xre or xpg would produce an intense throw behind a collimator or aspheric or a very wide pattern depending on the angle the light is focused into
Some of my lights look like spot beams if I shine them onto clouds or buildings at night.

That pic was posted months ago on wojo's thread. A few people are working on this mod.
In terms of a completed job on the 3G, there have been a few claims. I call bluff. Until and unless someone wants to prove me wrong with some real pics. (One of the few times I'd really love to be wrong )

I just saw a 2012-14 TL with Jewel Eye lights! I did a triple take but it was def not the TLX bc it had the TL's big butt. Tried to get a pic but it was already gone by the time I got my phone out of my pocket.

the only people I know doing it; are doing it as side hustles.
so, you find these people on instagram...then you talk to these said people on instagram. then you figure out if this is something that you want to do and can afford, as it isnt cheap. it likely runs into the thousands... $$$
