But what if you saw the headlights once they were done? Might come out really nice! I think it would give the car a sleek updated appearance. I'm sure nearly everyone would think your car was a better version of a TLX. The reason I'm not going for it is that it's just not worth the energy and effort for me. At this stage I'm looking to a next car and this is stuff I'll look for built in. Perhaps years ago when I was into heavy mods that I could enjoy a few years, I think I definitely would have tried this.
Yeah I agree with this sentiment. I asked JNC about this a month ago when I was re-working my headlights and he said he tinkered around with it but clearance was the issue. At the end ... I started to have your though process and said ... just ride it out a bit more longer till I jump into my next car.

The Tesla looking real good....

Hell ya. Tesla is definitely a contender.......errr. in maybe 5yrs, lol. 100k is a BIT out of my budget. Haha. Gotta step up to that I guess.

For now something in the $45k ballpark with a manual and I don't mind 2nd hand this time, just low miles. E92 M3? Hmm. Or maybe I'll stretch the budget $15k more and buy my dream, 911 Carerra S. Now that is a leap over a 3GTL.

And I'll forgive it if it doesn't have LED headlights.

Hehe yea, it's doable, just want to be sensible though. The thing with Telsa is all these guys are buying em. If I showed up with a Saleen or Unplugged Performance version to "one up" them could you imagine the envy? lol.

I would much rather have an LED behind a projector (like on the Infiniti Q50, or even the Toyota Corolla), rather than the Jewel Eye setup (I'm not really a fan of the Jewel Eyes). That way, I wouldn't change the look of the 3G, I would get a longer-lasting light source, without having to worry about warm-up/cool-down times, and I would actually be able to flash my high-beams in the day. Also, if my alarm were to go off, I wouldn't have to worry about my headlights taking a big hit from all the flashing.

It would still be expensive for the LEDs alone, and a pain to get all the wiring and optics correct.

Something I've been pondering is using the space to the sides of the main projectors for a DRL mod. eBay merchants sell 1 inch diameter lenses that magnify(collinate?) the light output from individual LEDs, so 4-5 of these lenses in two rows (above/below the chrome bar) could create an interesting effect. Or it could look horrible! Thoughts?

^^Meh, I mean maybe I shouldn't knock it before seeing but I'd think that would look pretty cheap. If anything, that one that looks like a projector lens may work.

I can see how some people may not like the Jewel eye look, it's different. Some people don't like that dotted LED look for tail lights either, but I personally like that look. But are you sure you have seen Jewel Lights in person? For instance the way it looks on the RLX is 100x better than it looks in photos. The MDX ones are OK but don't look as nice as the RLX ones IMO.

I love the dotted setup for the tail lights. Not the implementation that's on the Camry or 07 Accord (they look cheap), but like on TL, Cadillacs, and others.

One thing to remember with headlights is the legality of doing something like this. A high power LED behind an aspheric or collimator can produce a very focused or wide beam of light. Some collimators can focus just about all of the leds output into a 12 or 10 degree beam that produces an intense and distant throw of light. Some of my dive lights that I modded produce about 1000 lumens of light out of a single LED and are blindingly bright. The aspheric would give a more even distribution of light, however if you look at headlights the lenses have those cut-out built into them to direct the light into a non-blinding pattern and meet state and federal laws.

Even an older and lower power Cree led like a xre or xpg would produce an intense throw behind a collimator or aspheric or a very wide pattern depending on the angle the light is focused into

Some of my lights look like spot beams if I shine them onto clouds or buildings at night.

Someone please tell me that someone on here did this work:

I grabbed the image from HID planet - but it's been done for the 3G.

That pic was posted months ago on wojo's thread. A few people are working on this mod.

In terms of a completed job on the 3G, there have been a few claims. I call bluff. Until and unless someone wants to prove me wrong with some real pics. (One of the few times I'd really love to be wrong )

Call me out, yes!

The filtered teaser shots, yes, we've seen them. Is that your car? Care to share more pics? We'd like to see the car not hiding in the garage anymore.

I just saw a 2012-14 TL with Jewel Eye lights! I did a triple take but it was def not the TLX bc it had the TL's big butt. Tried to get a pic but it was already gone by the time I got my phone out of my pocket.

the only people I know doing it; are doing it as side hustles.
so, you find these people on instagram...then you talk to these said people on instagram. then you figure out if this is something that you want to do and can afford, as it isnt cheap. it likely runs into the thousands... $$$
