Pentagon Federal is offering 3.49%. You have to call them and have an account with them. You can create an account via the toll free number and must deposit at least $5 using a credit card.

Initially I was told by my dealer that they would give me a rate of 4.9%, which I declined and showed up with a check from Pentagon Credit Union (3.49%). The dealer ended up beating that rate and got me a rate of 3.24% from Citizens Bank.

Good Luck!

Pretty sure AHFC is offering 3.9%. CapitalOneAutoFinance.com is offering 3.85% (3.49% if you are financing for 48 months I think). I believe the best bet is to find your best offer (try www.lendingtree.com and www.bankrate.com) get pre-approved and get your blank check, and take that to the dealer and challenge them to beat it. If they can they will want to because the dealer usually gets a little cash or kickback from AHFC to get you to finance with them - but keep in mind that they can't always beat the best bank or credit union rate. In this case you have your blank check and are ready to go if they can't beat or match. Also, if you belong to a credit union, many offer better auto finance rates for members, sometimes as low as 2.9%

Does anyone know about AHFC offering 2.9%? I believe they were offering it occasionally as a promo, but my dealer said they did not have that rate when I asked about a week ago.

You have to be eligible to open an account with them. Personaly, I don't belong to any organizations that would make me eligible for their membership.

They have a loop hole which lets you become a member as far as you donate $20 to a charity. The charity in place supports the families who have their spouses in the military serving abroad.

Is this information on their Web page? If not, how do I find out which charity it is? Thanks!

I recently received 2.9% from AHFC. The salesman said that it was an unpublished special, available through Feb 2004. I actually signed the contract on 3/10 and took delivery that week.

You need to call the Pentagon Credit Union and they will give you the details. I don't think the information is posted on the website.

Here's the toll free number - 1-800-247-5626.

Gee, maybe this will motivate you to overcome your lazziness and apply for the Pentagon credit union membership. Then again, if CapitolOne gave you a higher rate, that's probably because of less-than-perfect credit; same might prevent you from getting best rate elsewhere.

......must be read, "*Annual Percentage Rates (APRs) are 0.25 percentage points higher for telephone, fax, or mail applications and 0.50 percentage points higher with the invoicing option. Payments are monthly. We provide auto and motorcycle loans in all states, except New Hampshire."

You must have selected the invoice option.

Try one of your local neighborhood credit unions. I got 3.75% for 60 months with autowithdrawal/payroll deduction from one near me. The dealer was steamed, because I didn't go for their 3.5%. Stayed with my credit union becase I get paid every two weeks which equals 13 payments a year. Not to mention if you really are that lazy - you don't have to do anthing once it is set up. No mailing/stamping payments and no payments via the web. Nothing!! My employer and credit union do it all for me.
