Infamous Cracked Dash Replacement Cost

How much would it cost to have the cracked dash of a 2007/08 Acura TL replaced? I have tried googling it but not getting any answers. I wouldn't want a cover, I mean actually replacing the dash. Has anyone done this job themselves?

It cost me $214 to replace my dash. I bought a used one online, and installed it myself.

Found the thread thanks.

$214 is not bad at all and I wouldn't be against doing it myself. Where exactly did you get it from? Is it possible to buy it new online? I am seeing dash covers but no actual dashes. I could try to find one in a junkyard but that seems like a lot of trouble.

Guess it's possible to get new, but expect to pay ~$1.1k

New dash replacement gonna run you about $3K. Replaced of a used one is a risky business. Its like playing ticking time bomb.

i know someone who replace his dash with a used one and now it crack again. The worst part is the car spend all of its time in the climate control dealer.

Yeah thats worrisome, but i was thinking if I had to do this I would isolate the metal frame posts underneath with something like the tutorial on this forum recommends cause apparently that heating up with the cool AC on the other side is what causes the cracks.

I found mine from a 2008 from a northern seller from eBay. Free shipping to Florida.

The dash it self is flawed within the deign so no matter how hard you try it will EVENTUALLY cracked. If anything I want to see how much does it cost to wrap the dash in synthetic leather but I am still question the about the solution shall the airbag need to be deployed.

I also wrapped the plastic AC ducts underneath the dash with weatherproofing rubberized material. Wrapped completely! In addition to isolating the screwed mounting points with rubber O rings, I also used gasket sealer on the underside of the dash on the metal parts where the airbag comes through dash. This helps mitigate the expansion and contraction differences between the dash and the metal. Also, get a dash mat even after you replace the dash to prevent direct sunlight from hitting the dash and expanding it when you're traveling.

Tinting the windshield is illegal in most states.

I won't even touch my dash. What do you guys use to clean it? I am afraid the cleaner will accelerate the issue.

Don't they make a clear, UV blocking film, now?

^ yes they do! And you can also get a note from eye doctor! It’s technically illegal in most states, but 70% is so light, I doubt many cops would even mess with you, unless you drive like a retard.

3m crystalline tint but if you get in an accident insurance can try to deny your claim. Same with tinted tail lights being dimmed....

I wouldn't even bother with a used dash, I would just buy one brand new if you're gonna do all the work of replacing it, they're all ticking "crack" bombs, swapping another used will maybe buy you a few more years vs decade with a brand new one. I've been ignoring my cracked dash but its starting to get worse, ill probably end up getting a Coverlay, I just wish the lines were a little cleaner with the coverlay or if it was thinner, I dunno know...

I've had my used dash for almost 9 months now with no cracks. Bought it from an eBay seller from Jersey.

The Coverlay dash cover from rockauto is the way to go! About $30 less than buying from Coverlay direct (coverlaymfg.com). Installed mine a month ago to cover my aged cracking dash. Not 1000% perfect perfect, and it is missing the SRS Airbag insignia above the glovebox, but certainly looks good enough. Use Gorilla double-stick tape instead of the crappy silicone adhesive they supply with it.

I also have a Coverlay, and I suppose that once this dash cracks, I can go back to Coverlay. However, the used dash I got cost just a little more than a Coverlay. Minus the PITA to take out and install, I don't regret it. Decision time will come on whether I want to do that again.

You could probably get a used one for $100 if you pull it out yourself from someone that's parting out a car. Personally, I would just pay a little more to have them pull it out and ready for me to pick up.

I recommend trying to find someone that will sell you the dash with the brace and harness intact. That way, you can just do a simpler drop in when you pull yours out, but it must have the same options (i.e. navigation, manual, Type S) for this to work.

It's a lot of work, but not too complicated. You'll need two people to help pull it out and put the replacement in. You'll also need to transfer your VIN tag to the used dash.

That's a very good price.

It depends on how long OP is planning on keeping the car. A new dash is about $1k vs $100-$300 used. Plus you have to add labor. I've done a couple and I'll always recommend used.

I wouldn't even bother with a Coverlay.

It's funny, because I was at a local Pick'n'Pull lot the other day and thought to myself "Man, should I try to pull this dash and sell it online? Or even keep it as a spare?" This is from a 2007 TL and I live in Michigan.

Yeah but, is it worth 4 hours of your time to take out the dash vs the $250 or so you'd get?

Yeah at that point you might as well buy/take home all the other bits that you have to take off to get to the dash and part that entire area out piece by piece. Maaaybe worth it if you want to put in that time and effort.

How much do used dashes go for? Honestly just for me I'd be skeptical of paying even more than $100 knowing that dash could crack the next day after I install it or it could last for years.....

I got my used dash for $21X shipped. I also prepped the shit out of the AC vents, the airbag opening, isolated the metal supported using rubber O-rings, etc.

One year since I've replaced my dash and I have had zero issues. I know more cracks are coming, but I'm riding this wave for as long as I can.

I recently picked up a 2005 Base TL that looks to have lived outside its whole life. Needless to say, the dash was cracked like a mo fo. I went the Coverlay route and am really satisfied with the results!

I'm always intrigued to see people's Coverlay photos. Any chance you'd care to post some pictures of your install?

It still fucking bugs me to no end seeing one of those. Why could they have not extended the part just above the glove compartment all the way to the door instead of cutting it off?!!?

Given that that one section protrudes below the rest of the dash, it is probably a way to avoid having to use a larger box for shipping? Just a guess...

Do we know anything about passenger airbag effectiveness with that hard coverlay on top?

I don't know of any instances of someone who had the Coverlay and the airbag blew.

While I understand the visual comfort of not having to look at a cracked dash...my other concern is with how effective and safe the passenger airbag is.

I assume the manufacturer of the coverlay likely has not spent the resources (time, money, personnel) or may be unable to (no technical ability/know-how) to test airbag effectiveness of a hard coverlay ontop of a OEM dash when the airbags deploy. I assume OEM engineers took that into account when designing dashboards...but of course having a cracked dashboard itself introduces unknown variables into the airbag function...

I'm in the same boat here on my 07 TL Type S. Initial crack out of nowhere this summer passenger side airbag area. Tried to somewhat "glue" it together. Damn shame as the car is garaged or the dash is "toweled" when parked out. Trying to see if the cover is nice or funky fitting?
