If my car says I have 15 miles left to empty. Do I have 2 gallons in reserve?

I would recommend trying to avoid getting your tank that low to avoid premature fuel pump failure / damage at least that was what I was always told maybe it's different with newer cars.

I'll risk it. I've ran my TL that way for 125k miles, and will continue to; in fact I've only looked at the miles to empty a once playing with MID.

Gotcha - this assumes that the next tank of gas is going to achieve roughly the same MPG.

This is somewhat of an old wives tale. Although I'm sure it can and probably has happened, it's not common and would require running exceptionally low or out of fuel regularly.

I agree i've been driving 3G TL for 11+ years and have always gotten 400 miles per tank will no ill effects.

The MID is so far from dead on. I've been logging my distance, gas prices, amount of gas in liters I put in with partial fills and full fills for years now over different cars and the TL is unreliable when it comes to MPG and other fuel calculations. It is optimistic, as in it will tell you you're doing 25mpg while you're actually doing 23, for instance.

It's no surprise that's it's slightly optimistic, most cars are, because they want you to feel good about your MPG... cheeky auto makers.

Hmm, that's odd as I still occasionally check my mpg via calculator and it's off most by 0.3mpg, but it's never even close to being off by 1 or more mpg.

I haven't tried to figure out in detail, I simply go by my own calculations instead, but I believe some of it might also be due to the way the MID handles rounding of numbers.
Usually it is off by less than 1 MPG, that I cannot say otherwise, but it has never been exactly spot on either. Maybe it's an issue with Canadian TL's too, since we calculate using liters per 100km instead of miles per gallon.

I ran it to 0 miles once and it had 3 gallons still, took 14 to top off the 17 gallon tank. Typically though I refill when convenient between a quarter and half tank, running low is more likely to overheat the fuel pump and pick up sediment.

I usually always get 400 miles per tank. As for overheating the fuel pump I'm not too worried about that either as 75k or so of my miles came in South Florida where the ambient temp was 85°+ over half the year. The way I look at it as long as the fuel pump is pumping fuel it'll stay cool.
