Idiots trying to start a drag race with you
Hey all....
I'm a relatively new 3G TL owner and thought I'd throw this topic out there after something that happened to me this morning on the way to work.
I was at a stop light, first in line, and out of the corner of my eye saw a white car on my left. (I normally stay in the right lane as a rule --- this was a four lane undivided roadway).
Anyhow, the light changes and the person on my left guns his engine and within a few seconds is several hundred yards in front of me and proceeds to yank his/her vehicle into the right lane w/o signaling, as if to say f*ck you. Meanwhile, I'm just relaxedly accelerating and cruising down Meridian St. listening to satellite radio and in no hurry. What was going through my mind was -- whatever. I love my TL for its looks, reliability, Honda engineering, and comfort -- not for showing other motorists up.
BTW, the white car was a 2006-10 BMW 328.
Any of you have experiences like this, where it seems like other drivers view the fact that you're driving a TL as a challenge of some sort? Let's hear your experiences and feedback.

Happens to me on occasion, its normally teenagers in riced out civics/nissans tho. Sometimes I convince them im down to race and when the light turns green I watch them take off like a bat outa hell while I accelerate normally with the rest of traffic. I get a laugh out of it.

This is what I thought of a TL back in August of '05, before I had ever owned one. This is from me in the turbobuick forum in the kill section:
So yeah, it's safe to say I didn't give the TL a second look even with it trying to race me and even when I was out trying to find a race in the GN.
It's very race people try and race me in the TL. Maybe it's because I'm getting older or maybe no one really cares. I'm also not out on the streets every weekend night from 7pm to 2am.
I also used to drink a lot so my writing was pretty crappy back then being buzzed half the time.
I have a friend coming to town next Friday so I decided to go to the airport and get gas for the car tonight since I'll most likely be taking it out when she gets here. On the way back I'm not looking for trouble but definitely keeping an eye out for anyone that looks twice at me. I had an Acura TL try me but I didn't really bite. We're on the way home and my friend spots a bike. Not sure what kind but it was a newer crotch rocket. I wait on a right turn until his light goes green and I pull out next to him. Right as we're side by side he goes to turn into a neighborhood. I get desperate and do a ricer blowoff next to him. He pulls out of the turn lane and guns it next to me. We're now on a long corner doing about 65mph. I have it down in third and his bike is screaming. When the road straightens, he hits it slightly before me but I had almost 0 lag and pulled a solid 2-3 cars by 100mph. I hit the brakes, the bike pulled next to me, gave a thumbs up, and turned off. My friend was laughing because he doubted I beat the R6 a while ago. So it was a pretty good night for me and my friend.
84 GN. 4.1L girdled with 8.5:1 JEs, 212-212 Comp Cam, GN1s, Ported stock intake, Ford FM IC, 6765DBB, KB headers, Cotton's 3" DP, Innovative Turbo Systems external gate, 60lb injectors, Turbo tweak chip, and a few misc things. No times with new combo yet.So yeah, it's safe to say I didn't give the TL a second look even with it trying to race me and even when I was out trying to find a race in the GN.

This is fun. Another Acura from a million years ago. This was mostly commenting on suspension and the GN has 10x the suspension work that the TL does but to the TL's credit it doesn't need much work.
I'm extremely happy with the way mine handles and hooks. It's a great compromise between ride and handling. Passengers usually ask what has been done because it feels a little stiffer than stock but not bad. The car literally has no detectable body roll.
Front end was rebuilt with PST's polygraphite kit. Triangular front braces, MOOG front springs, I don't remember exactly which ones but they were only two steps up from stock. Koni adjustables all around with the rears on soft and the fronts at 50%. Behind the seat brace, All body bushings with solids on the front and rear. ATR rear sway bar, Metco aluminum lowers.
The rear sway bar made a huge difference in straight line traction. I know this because it kept breaking the stock bolts and every time the car started not hooking I knew it broke a bolt.
I'm running little 16" rims now with 225s BFG G-force tires and 255 DRs out back. I got into it with an Acura Integra on the freeway. I'm driving normal in the slow lane, this guy for no reason cuts me off nearly taking my front bumper off. The exit we were taking was a long, long corner with two lanes. I ease into the gas, change lanes, and go around slowly. I hear him get on it so I give it enough gas to keep him at my rear bumper. I enter the corner at 85mph and it has a posted speed limit of 45mph. This guy is still on me so I start easing into the gas more and more. I'm probably doing over 100mph at this point and the car feels very stable still. The Acura is still trying to pace me but didn't quite make it. He loses it in an almost perfect 4 wheel drift and spins off onto the median. I checked the mirror to make sure he didn't flip or hit anything and kept going. My car felt like it still had more in it.
I think I had something against Acuras lol.

I know what you mean OP. For whatever reason kids in rice rockets and even the occasional minivan usually assume I want to race at red lights. It's even funnier when I take off right as the light turns green but at normal speed. They assume I'm gonna floor it and end up looking like a moron.

I've only had one guy try to foll with me. It was a black Lexus, late at night, I was cruising on the way to my gf's and he got in the lane next to me and kept hitting the gas but letting off to stay with me.
I just gave him a quick WOT and let off to return to my normal speed, he then sped away.
I wasn't about to race him, love my car too much and I know cops sit on the road I was on all the time at night.

I'm back
I was at a stop light couple weeks ago, there was a jacked up 2000ish oldsmobile intrigue?? with 4 trashy kids in the car, they kept begging me to race. I punched my gas for like 2 second and let go, i knew it was a waste of my gas if i played with him.

Great stories. I'm too old to race, but used to play around just for fun. Some of the most dangerous cars I found were boosted Civics--built ones were super light and so fast off the line--to this day I still don't understand how they get front wheel drive cars to hook up like that. Feels bad being pulled by a Civic in my 300ZX. The funniest was being pulled by a guy in an old 240Z, I met him and found out that he had put a V8 in it with Nos. Absolutely ridiculous car--I love sleepers like that!

Boosted Civics have never been a player on the streets. I'm 10 bus lengths ahead before they can hook. One thing I put a lot of thought into was making the car hook better than anything else out there. Power is no good if you can't put it down.

Today and yesterday. Now Im not the most non aggressive driver around but I swear just like you. I was a light and this Lancer Evolution took off and slowed down and then took off again and swerved in front of me. His girl in the car was pissed so he slowed down and got into the far right lane. I had to laugh right in his face yo! And today some Subaru took off on me and my son, we both laughed so hard. Its gonna happen just how it is. Its happen to me more with the Type S than with the ABP TL.

I work at a warehouse, so it's down one of those industrial park streets that are completely void of cars, besides the warehouse employees, so me and coworkers usually race to the end of the industrial area to the main street, then just cool it down and head home. It's fun and nobody ever drives down there but us, so there's no one to run into. So far I've killed a 350z, a 300C, and an Integra, but it's mostly because none of them know how to drive very well; I know the Z could take me in a second! But that's about all the racing I do. I have older Civic's trying to race me all the time, but I hardly ever bite; don't wanna hear the fart cans rev up!

remind me one time, I stop at the red light knowing there is a cop sitting not too far from me (I saw him hide in the bush when I travel the other bound now I am coming back) this guy driving a Altima 2.5 trying to show me what sup at the red light so I rev my engine and pretend I gona race him but when green light turn on he peel off mean while I just slowly accelerate away. Only take him couple second later where the cop saw him and pull him over, I drove by and beeping my horn at him and gave him a LOL.

All About Trance
I was heading up to Knoxville a couple of weeks ago and passed a riced out Neon, and not the SRT4 kind. Next thing I know, he was on my ass so I gave it a little gas to get some room away from him. After that, I just moved over to the slow lane to get onto my exit and he wanted me to hear his bov while passing me. I just laughed to myself.

i get it all the time but mainly because I'm modded out.
my car is so loud even at 3k rpm that people think i'm punching it, even if I'm accelerating at a normal pace with everyone else. They have no idea how infinitely louder it is at WOT, lol, and have no clue that I'm really just at 1/4 throttle, but they don't know any better so they will try and just take off from a 5 mph roll.
again, the car is absurdly loud so it kinda puts a target on my back. I don't care because I just like my car loud, but it attracts a lot of attention in regards to people wanting to try and race. Fact of life, I signed up for it.
That being said, I rarely respond unless I have a lot of open road and the other guy is in something that I know will be a decent run. After all, what's the point of crushing another Civic Si, or a crappy sedan, or <insert any non-turbo-Cayenne or Jeep SRT-8 SUV here> ? I know my car is faster, don't need the extra stress on the engine, I have nothing to prove, but more than anything I know that most people are terrible at driving. Just utterly terrible.
Just the other day on my way to work on the freeway, for some reason this idiot in a late 90's Malibu was trying to follow me and make quick lane changes at speed like I was. A minute later I look behind me as he tries to fly into my lane behind me and he loses it and goes sideways full out on the freeway and speeds off crashing into the barrier on the right side head-on. God damn idiot. That's why I hate it when people try to F with me because none of them have performance driving experience and have no idea about the physics of what their cars can or cannot do.
A couple weeks ago when I was out tooling around against my buddy in his M3, we ran into this kid driving daddy's corvette - full lean with cocked-sideways baseball cap and everything. Full-out douchebag mode. He was trying to instigate and I just let it ride because I have 0 faith that this kid won't kick the rear end out on that corvette and hit me.
