I need opinions on Taillight overlays...

I recently blackout out my emblems and grill in flat black and it looks INSANE. I love it on my WDP 06. I really wanna carry on the black and white theme to the taillights cause it just dosnt look right now. As a temp. fix I was looking at the ebay tint overlays for taillights and they are not to expensive, what do you guys thing about it as a temporary thing.

I wouldn't waste my time on temporary stuff. you should take you time and not waste money, you should get JnC to tints you tails, he is SICK at those mods. and you should def black out your roof. Black roof looks hella sexy on WDP.

Ckeck out Lamin-X Protective Films. They carry some mice material and you can create your own designs as well.

Mine are done with the e-bay overlays and I think it was less than $20 shipped .. been on since the car was new in 06. Not a problem .. pix I posted also has the roof overlay on a WDP. Headlight overlays too.

Overlays work just fine as long as you prep the surface and take your time.

I had overlays on my taillights on my IS and they looked good, I had them on my TL-S for a day and took them off because I thought it looked bad. I love the way the stock tails look on the Type-S, never really examined a base car closely though. It's personal preference, it's not like you're out a ton of cash if you don't like how it looks or you're getting pulled over a lot.

Up here the law states the tail lights have to be red ( they illuminate red ) and visable at 150 M in full daylight ( which they do ) .

I had RockBlocker overlays. They started to look crappy after a while.
3 or so coats of VHT niteshades...wetsand, clear coat & wet sand. look's awesome. really easy to do once the bumper is off.

agreed. dont bother with the over lays. looks cheap and will eventually peal. Cops hassled me even more with the tinted tails.I had bought them early on and took them off. acktl05 is a tail light vendor on here and creates custom tails. save your money and in the end do it "right"

07-08 base tails overlays with the cutouts on the clear brake sections look great on wdp...that's what i have on my car currently...been pulled over for old registration and no mention of tails...

i've had 04-06 base with the cutouts on the brake sections...that looked great too.

I don't think JnC does tails. He's a headlight guy.

Are they removeable once you put them on? If so it wouldnt hurt just to see how it looks and if I like it I could pop the lights out and use nightshade...

I never had a problem with cops when I had ebay tints, that is before I became a tail light vendor on here to make custom tail lights. The main problem is that in the first three years of my car I changed the tints 4 times which ended up costing me ~80 dollars. In the long run my service will save you and resale value is there as well. I tell you this because you get what you pay for. My first set I had on for about 8 month and it actually "melted" to the tail light. I changed them all for many reasons: They fade really fast, peel off and harden/chip after a while. Not to mention one set flew off while doing a highway run. I personally would never go back, but never buy the pre cut tints that you can peel back off. Yes its cool because you can take them off, but I did my headlights with vinyl for right now, which goes on like tint and sticks, and its the exact width/length of the tail light. Those e-bay pre-cut tints are garbage and you can see a line of red on the sides and leaves a "red tint":

Here are the last pair and most recent, they are faded and a cop actually rolled up and asked if I was replacing the black tl tail lights with those illegal ones on the grey car:

My vinyl sheet put me in the hole 14.50. It keeps its shine better. The tail lights needs to be cleaned with rubbing alcohol and such, then wet the tail light and apply tint. You will need to apply water to the outside so that it does not scratch the vinyl while you squeegee out the bubbles and water. You can apply a lightly "sway" if you will of a blow dryer to make it stick to spots it doesn't want to. You can also wet grit sand and VHT shade it then clear coat it. I saw a DIY on that, its work but worth it.

STOP!!!!!! wait! TL is a classy car dont be like every other douche out there and black ur roof and do overlays. for the tails id go with AckTL05 or JNC they both do good work. if i were you i would get type s headlights and have the bezel painted flat black to go with your mods. it will go great with the theme of your car but still have that OEM look. member that its better to have a nice car then one that is retarded and gets attention

It may be popular to have a roof overlay on this site but I personally have never seen one in person. I would recommend a set of custom tail lights just because it sets the car apart from others, and as a business/marketing major, the resale value is there. Since the OP does not want to spend the money, my suggestion for a cheap fix would be vinyl or sanding and VHT. Neither will be a custom set, and you may get hassle from the cops, but it is defiantly better than precut reusable tint over lays. I do not blame the other person for taking that route since I did, but if I knew back then what I do now, I would have never gone that route.

Even a teaspoon of car wash soap in the spray bottle full of water works .. or a few drops of dish soap .. I prefer the car wash stuff.

Thats what I use .. the idea is to lubricate the surface so you can move the overlay around .. with car wash soap you just need a little more but unlike dish soap it won't remove your wax when ut runs down your bumper.

Prep the light with rubbing alcohol first.

tint overlays FTW. i got tired of the blacked out look after a few months and had the option to try out a design to see if i like it, and take off the tint completely and go back to stock if i dont. on top of that, i dont know what people are talking about when that say the tints look cheap. they look the same tinted any method, and sometimes are glossier with the tints. here are some pics in different lighting to get a feel for how they look

in the 4th pic my sidemarker is tinted, in the last one it isnt.

Prep the light with rubbing alcohol first.
Get the light REAL clean with rubbing alcohol and make sure you do it in somewhat nice weather. Use a pinch of soap, the soap is so that it can move a little and such. Since you are using a reusable tint layer, you really do not need the soap, just water.

but if anyone wants to go for any look besides tinted, id definitely go with ack if you have the dough. the lights in your album look sick. i just think tint suffices if you just want that look
