I filled up last night with 93 octane and on the MID is says 374 miles. I think that should b around 22mpg since the tank holds about 17 gallons. The only quesiton i have is why does the MID say 17MPG and 21MPH? Can any1 help me on that one?

The MID reflects a cummulative average as you burn the tank. It is more reactive when you 1st fill up or reset the MID, nearly an 'instant' mpg / mph reading. But as you progress, these numbers are tempered as the averages come into play. Your initial numbers were due to theinitial situation your MID was computing.

Think of it in a reverse scenario. If you have say, burned 3/4 of a tank since the MID was last reset, it may display avg mph of say 31mph and 25 mpg. You stop at a long light, and likely the avg will not be impacted by that.

Now take the same scenario with a freshley reset MID, your avg mpg & mph will likely drop down while awaiting the light to change. So intially the MID computaions are reactive to your immediate driving situation, while over the course of the tank, the avg is less reactive to immediate driving situations.

This also explains how very high mpg have been reported (30+) due to the MID being reset and immediately entering highway cruising where the TL efficiency shines.

I drive about 90% city (suburban, not dense city traffic) and 10% highway. Have had my TL for just over a year and have 12,000 miles. I run the A/C only when absolutely necessary. I am easy on the accelerator and braking.

Currently average about 24 mpg on a tank of gas (usually 89 or 93 octane -- I rotate at fill up time). My highway average is typically 32-34 mpg when I go on trips @ 70 mph.

Last time I filled up, the MID said "10 Miles to Empty." The needle was right at "E." The most I could get in the tank was 14.2 gallons. That leaves an additional 2.8 gallons in the tank. I had gone 340 miles on the 14.2 gallons, or 23.9 mpg.

I drive 80% city and average around 19 on the mid and get a hair under 300 a tank.

I'm rollin around 80% hwy & 20% elsewhere. My last 3 tanks that I went through last week were 417miles, 390miles, and 371miles. The first two were getting close to dipping in the bottom of the tank, the last one had Just turned the low-fuel light on. So roaming around MD-PA on I-83 and the 695 beltway... I'm not seeing too bad mileage... minus all the construction spots.

The WORST thing you can do is try and figure gas mileage from the gas gauge... it is not accurate at all...

My Monte Carlo can go 200 miles on the 1st 'half' and about 75 to 100 on the second 'half'...

You must use actual gas put in the car or the MID as a substitue as it is pretty accurate..

The bottom line is you cant do anything about it, except to not blast off at every light or on-ramp. That's it. Enjoy the car and put gas in it when it needs it. What's the use worrying about anything else?

Just drive the car and have a good time with it. Worrying about mpg is a little absurd.

I did a little experiment as gas prices have been on the incline. I'm a lead foot anyways. If someone passed me, I must speed up to let them run blockage for me.

I decided about a month ago to not go any faster than 5 mph UNDER the limit. Although I was almost run over several times, I got (according to the computer) 7 mpg over what I was used to. Over 17 gallons of fuel, that's an extra 117 miles per tank. I know we never actually burn all 17 gallons, but that difference is staggering.

I used to fill up every 225-289 miles. Although I've now set the limit according to the speed limit, I get over 350+ per tank (ave 29 mpg on 6MT). Big savings since I drive 62 miles to work one way.

It's all in how you drive it.

I drive about 80mph on average to and from work (70miles). I usually get over 350 on a tank and average roughly 26-27mpg according to the MID. The final average speed is usually in the 40-50 range. 6MT here as well. I also noticed a 1mpg dent when the dealer put in 5w-30 synthetic and I'm very systematic with my driving routes and conditions too.

I am at 233 miles and have 55 miles left according to the MID... Like I said I drive 60% highway and 40% city... The MID states I am getting 18 MPG... I don't have a heavy foot as I drive speed limit most of the times. I expected better mileage than this...

I just got 270 to the tank ( I can have a heavy foot at times...) I thought the car would get farther on a tank also, but it is better then my wife;s lincoln suv.. her avg is 14 mpg (it cost $15-20 more to fill up and gets 300 miles to the tank) ...

I'm still waiting to run the oil in the car now to 5k so Mike can look at the oil analysis results, so this might be a little premature. Going well over 3k on the syn oil i was using drove the miles per tank down a lot. same route, same mph, all that...just the older the oil got the worse the mpg got. maybe it has something to do with it, not sure yet

According to the MID, my 05 TL AT gets 32 MPG pure highway (not rush hour). Mix of 80% highway during rush hour and 20% city I get 25 to 26 MPG.

I just drove about 530 miles from Chicago area to Nashville area and made about 29-30 mpg, according to the MID (all highway driving, obviously). I got about 450-460 miles to the tank. I did hit some traffic in Indianapolis, which I'm sure hurt it a bit.

Depends on how full you fill your tank

When filling my tank if I stop putting in fuel after the first shut-off click from the nozzle my gauge is on full but the tank is not full. I have found that on average I can put about 3 more gallons in the tank after the nozzle stops. This must be done very slowly. This will extend my range significantly.

Me too...same 6MT. I've seen over 30MPG on the hwy. and as low as 16 driving around town with the average MPH at 30 or even less. I've never in my life seen a car with such disparity between city and hwy driving. My other car, a Honda DelSol gets 38-40MPG regardless of where I drive...on regular too!! I'm not trashing my TL...I LOVE IT..but it's just very strange that the mileage varies so much between city and hwy.

427 miles on one tank. All interstate driving. About 170 pounds in trunk(vacation luggage). Low fuel light was on for a while and was afraid to go much farther. The little woman was raising hell.

450+ on one tank

I can normally get close to 400 on one tank of gas. On a trip from Huntsville, AL to Auburn, AL, I managed to get alittle more than 450 miles on a tank. I drive a 6-speed. I am not a conservative driver, but I also don't want to waste gas. One trick I have found, is that the auto pump's want to shutoff at 12.5 or 13.5 gallons. You have to sit there and fill it up completely. This is a pain, but the extra mileage is worth it. I average 24 MPG out of the car, which I feel is not to bad for the distances I have to drive. I have to go back and forth to school, which is 5 miles each way in stop and go style. I then compute 15 miles each way to work, mostly highway.

Not bad for a V-6 in the least. My worst ever was around 22MPG and that was when I first got it and was playing all the time.

Be careful when doing this... you can ruin something in the car if you fill up past a certain point... I can not remember where I read this, but it has to do with the fumes or something... but I could be wrong....

I just got back from a trip of exactly 350 miles on roads through the Cascade Mountains in Washington State. Of those miles, about 12 or 15 were in town, the remainder on 60 mph limit roads. I have an 04 TL 5AT. At the end of the trip I put in 10.5 gallons at the first pump shutoff point which is my usual custom. This computes to a 33.3 mpg average. Not too shabby for a fairly powerful car.

My last few tanks only gave me 250mi each. City driving. No traffic jam. No difference between 89 and 91 gas. It looks like city driving is better served with 89 gas for less money.

Today's cars are equipped with charcoal canisters to capture the gas fumes in the gas tank trying to escape as you put fuel into the gas tank. The fumes in the canister are sent via the Exhaust Gas Recirculator to the engine.

i'm avg. 18 mpg, and that's b/c i drive in the city almost 99.9% of the time. Avg. about 260-280 miles/tank, so i'm assuming if i drove highway more than 50% of the time, i'd easily get over 300 miles/tank.

My last 2 tanks also averaged only about 260 miles as my MID stated that my avg MPG was 19. This was about 70% city and 30% highway. My foot is not even that heavy. Looks like I need to take a trip to Vegas to test 100% highway MPG to see if I get the advertised 28 MPG..

Oh I guarantee you will get 28 for sure. I usually get 32+ on highway with some hills in rocky mountain. It's just that TL is bad in city.
