How many miles do you get out of a FULL tank of gas?

I just said the most memorable history about my car, 507 is rare. I used to get 350-400 per tank on highways. If I hit highway, I will have very good chance of having 450+ per tank.
This 5AT is tricky vehicle, which has superior MPG on highways, but it sucks while driving around in the city. I got 14-18 MPG here.

Acura does not state how much gas in actually in the tank when the low fuel light comes on due to people testing it out. Acura only says there is about 1/5 of a tank left, they're not even sure of an accurate amount....This is fact.

This is why Acurazine is here for!?

It's not too hard to figure out how many gallons are left in each stage. You could either measure and calculate by yourself (experiment on your car) or listen to what ppl have said.
After riding a few times, you should have no problems to discover those secret figures.

There's a massive road construction project between me and my work that won't be completed until 2008, so my average speed won't get any better until the 4G comes out.

When I fill up my gas tank, the Miles to Empty on the trip computer usually reads 468m (on one occasion, it didn't and I''m still trying to figure why.) Last time, after going for 190m, it said the car still had 110m to go. So from the trip computer estimates it probably would have got about 400m for the "tank". However, as has been documented elsewhere, the tank actually holds over 2gallons of fuel at "empty", so it could have potentially given me close to 450m. (My commute is over 80% highway and 20%city. My nighttime commute is with A/C off and daytime on Auto.)

Dear fellow TLers,
When you respond to fuel consumption posts, could you please state whether you have the 6MT or the 5AT as the transmission type is a big factor in this discussion. Could you also state your average speed as determined by the trip computer. I think these bits of information will make fuel comsumption threads more meaningful.
My last full tank gave me 335 miles for an MPG of 26.8 with an average speed of 65 MPH. This was as you would surmise mostly highway driving, with about 15 minutes of city driving.
Thanks,
TL-Rocket

With my 04 6MT (7k miles) I get 340-360 miles per tank in mixed driving.
The city driving is mostly around town stuff and I'm almost never stuck in traffic for any length of time ad you Boston and NY people are.

Max so far was 400 - mixed driving - mostly highway - commuting to work so some stop and go.
Hoping for more on a long trip somewhere.
Usually fill up tho around 350 each week

6-SP. Approx 10600 miles. I've been averaging 26.5 MPG, approx 320 miles to the tank, since I bought the car the in May. I drive 30% local and 70% highway.
IMHO the miles per tank isn't as accurate as the miles per gallon measure of performance since there will be variation in when everyone decides to fill their tank.
Even after the "Miles to Empty" reaches 0, you'll have approx 3 gallons of fuel left in your tank.

In contrast, My 02/530I fuel light comes on with 1.5 gallons left. Kinda scary. Id' rather have the 5 gallon warning.

Does anyone know how your car figures out fuel mileage?.....I do
It is not that accurate of a process, so I wouldn't go by it, it's just an estimate.
The fuel mileage is based on driving habits for one, then the pcm determines the rest by the vss and injector pulse. Thats it.

for those of you going 400+ on a single tank, how many gallons do you fill up? Also how long do you drive with the light on??
For me, when I drove till the light when on, I still only filled up about 13.5 gallons and the trip meter never went down to zero. It still had about 30 miles left it said. I think I only drove about 320 miles too. I have no idea how some of you are getting over 500 miles a tank?!?

This figure is constantly being updated, and is why the Average MPG figure does not wildly fluctuate, but changes as conditions change.
When you fill up your tank and reset the trip computer, watch it as you drive down the road. The Average MPG will start out very low, somewhere around 7-10, because of the increased fuel used when starting the car, but will quickly average out to a more reasonable figure.
I have been checking my reading from the trip computer with the actual quantity of fuel added during the fill-up and the actual miles driven since the last fill-up, and the trip computer has always been dead-on.

Also, you will find the totally different "miles to empty" after filling up your tank.
- if you drive consecutive non-stop highway with steady cruising speed for about 20 miles straight, before entering the gas station, you will see miles to go "300-400+" after the fill-up.
- if you drive in jam traffic with stop and go for about 20 miles, before entering the gas station, you will see miles to go "220-300+" after filling it up.
(It's all very clear in Ron A's post upstairs. )
For this part, your TL does calculate the "recent MPG" to give you the estimation.

While the light ON, and filling it up, yes, you prolly get 12.5-14 gallons, right. But your "30 miles left" on MID is the tricky part, which is based on the estimation by your final dozens of miles' conditions.
Let's call up Ron A's data here...
- When the low fuel warning light comes on, if you are getting 25 mpg you can go 94 miles, but if you are only getting 20 mpg, you can only go 74 miles. Of course, other miles per gallon figures will result in different results. This means you have approximately 3.7 gallons remaining.
- When miles to empty reads zero, that is time to fill up, but you can still go 57 miles at 25mpg, but only 45 miles at 20mpg. This means you have approximately 2.3 gallons remaining.
- When filling the tank, if you stop at the first shutoff, you will have about 17 gallons in the tank.
- The tank will actually hold about 19 gallons, but it is not recommended to fill the tank to capacity, so stop at the first shutoff.
So, if I continue to get 30+ MPG in cruising condition, when my LOW FUEL WARNING LIGHT is ON, what my MID would say, it's prolly "100" more. Plus, I drove beyond "Miles to Empty"=0, thus it's another "70" miles more...

The MPG reading from the trip computer and my fuel log are always the same, while miles to empty is always an underestimate of the actual miles you can do with the fuel in the tank.

I guess that would includes the top tube and the space of upper fuel tank. It's beyond the normal capacity. Meanwhile, for me, I really don't know how Acura does 17...

Total Miles on Full Tank
I just purchased a 2004 Acura TL SSM/Ebony Non-Navi and was wondering how many miles each of you get on a full tank of 91 Octane Unleaded. Any combo of highway driveway to city driving is ok... I drive about 60% highway and 40% city. I am curious b/c my tank is at a quarter and I only have 210 miles... Is this normal?
Thanks in advance
Thanks in advance

Crazymjb is right.. if you have a heavy foot taking off from lights, getting on the highway , etc etc... This will severally effect you gas mileage . (I thought the same thing when I bought mine…)

I do about 75-80% highway (LA's 101 and 405 fwys) and the remainder of the time is city driving and I get about 270-300 mi./tank. There are times, however, when the gods are smiling down on me and there is 'less' traffic on 101 which is when my right foot is it's heaviest These tanks range in the 225 mi./tank or less.
Considering this is about the same mileage I used to get in my Integra before I traded her in and my TL has 2 more cylinders... I'm happy with the mileage.

Well, I am not going to formulate an opinion on gas milage until i hit my 3000miles....i am trying to break the car in slowly...and at that time i would be happy if i can get anywhere near 300 miles per tank....seeing as the tank fills for $45-50 (WOW)

I drive mostly highway to and from work (35mi round trip) and I average 350+ per tank (with about 2-3 gallons in the tank when I fill up) and average 27MPG. I have, on occasion gone 400mi+ on a tank. Mine is a 5AT.

I see a massive disparity between highway and city with my TL. When driving all hwy, I get insane gas milage. I actually drove from Atlanta, GA to Raleigh, NC on one tank of gas (still had enough gas to run some errands the next morning). However, when driving all city it drops to 265-280 miles per tank. I have a 6MT, so I know I am little heavy on the gas.....but how can you not be? Too much fun of a car!!!

I am conservative driver, with periodic bouts of denial. Drive more spirited and you will find the TL gets thirsty, especially in city driving and being a heavy sedan. But cruising on the highway, it is surprisingly efficient.
Sometimes I feel like Kramer (Seinfeld) trying to see if I can get the MID to bump up 1 mpg while driving (the episode where he drove the Saab on empty...)
