Question How does the TL and Type S feel at higher speeds?

Just curious to know how the TL and Type S feels at higher speeds such as cross country freeway trips?

Does it feel planted, solid and inspire confidence at higher speeds?

or

Does it get squirrely and become a hand full at the upper regions?

I.E. front or rear end get light and twitchy(lift)

or

Japanese autobahn cruiser?

Got to agree wuth the following, that I find the car very stable at the 75/80 MPH range. No complaints, but you'll find that the handling is a trade off, as the suspension is harder than the other cars in it's class, which is fine by me. You won't believe the handling capabilities, especialy for a FWD, 4 door sedan.

Thought I'd just copy the following:

Stable and controlled, the TL delivers a tauter ride than comfort-minded rivals such as the Lexus ES 330. Manual-transmission models' performance-tuned suspension yields an even firmer ride, especially with optional performance tires. Sharp, agile, and well-controlled, the TL is helped by a rigid body structure. Nicely weighted, linear steering feel adds to enjoyment, though occasional torque steer is evident when flooring the throttle at low speeds--especially with a manual transmission. Little cornering lean is evident. Strong, smooth brakes inspire confidence--the manual model's Brembo units, in particular.

the MT's have performance tuned suspension? I didn't know that, I thought the suspension on my 06MT was the same as the AT?

In non-S type cars the MT car has a thicker sway bar, limited slip differential, and 4-piston Brembo brakes up front. I think those are the only differences. So comparing a stock AT to MT, the heavier sway bar will improve handling a bit.

There is a guy on the forums who is in the US military and is based in Germany. He brought his 3G TL with him and has posted several video's of his 150mph travels on the autobahn. If you want to ask anybody about high speed stability... he would be the dude to ask.

The MT also has a larger spare tire in the trunk that helps to neutralize the front/rear weight distribution. Also the MT transmission is lighter than the AT transmission.

I just did some quick research and found that every important part in both the front & rear shock assemblies is different between the MT & AT versions of the car. This leads me to believe that there is some sports tuning going on for the 6MT version. After all, the 04-06 6MT is listed as the "TL Sport"...

Here are the part numbers for comparison between two 05 models:

Front 6MT:
51605-SEP-A11 shock
51401-SEP-A15 spring
51601-SEP-A16 right assembly
51602-SEP-A16 left assembly

Rear 6MT:
52611-SEP-A12 shock
52441-SEP-A12 spring
52610-SEP-A12 rear assembly

Front 5AT:
51605-SEP-A03 shock
51401-SEP-A06 spring
51601-SEP-A07 right assembly
51602-SEP-A07 left assembly

Rear 5AT:
52611-SEP-A04 shock
52441-SEP-A02 spring
52610-SEP-A04 rear assembly

My 2005 TL 5AT feels planted and secure at freeway and higher speeds, but I've not driven it over 120 mph.
FWIW, my 1988 Integra, 1991 Camry and minivan are all planted at freeway + speeds -- I can't imagine any car built after 1980 feeling unstable or loose at less than 100 mph if it's in good working order.

Not true when my moms car was in the shop and we had a jeep liberty as a rent a car that did not like the highway. The wind would blow it around and it would be all over the place it was pretty bad. However it was the 100% stripped down model with aboustely NOTHING on it.

I had a 2004 tl auto that always felt fine at speed but very light on the steering. Got a 2007 tls which is very different. Much more solid feel in the steering and road holding at speed (70-80). Too many cameras out in Phoenix to do much faster than that thank heavens. The tls seems quieter and faster and you tend not to notice your speed.

That would be the link I'm talking about. It's worthwhile thread to read and definitely watch the video.

I have a 2004 6MT. Fastest I've gone was 105 mph on the Pennsylvania Turnpike last August. The engine didn't feel like it was working hard at all (in 6th gear, of course) and the handling felt fine, none of the bouncing or vibrations that you get in some cars, ride was still smooth. I was on a nice straightaway, so it's hard to comment otherwise.

This was on my current set of Pirellis.

I think to me the most notable thing was how the engine didn't seem the least bit strained. I'm sure this is a combination of having the six-speed and the larger displacement compared to other cars I've owned. My 1986 Legend, for example, seemed like I was pushing it a bit at 115 mph; it was a five-speed manual with a 2.5-litre V-6. My current 1988 RX-7 revs fairly high if I do 100, but it's also a 5-speed manual and it's a 1.3-litre rotary. Ms1995hoo's 2003 RSX Type-S turns close to 4,000 rpm at only 80 mph in sixth gear, which gets pretty noisy after awhile. The TL was far quieter than any of these cars at triple-digit speed.

Because the TL is so stable at high speeds, I often find myself surprised that I'm approaching 100 MPH. I'll probably be more surprised the 1st time I'm pulled over.

BMW doesn't make a 325 for 2007. The last model was in 2006 and I think it was around 220HP. The 2007 is the 328i with a whopping 230HP.

For 2007 BMW you have to drive the 335i to keep up with the TL-S. Of course it comes in around $10k more.

It was very solid over 130, however mine is lowered with TEIN SS, Comptech Sway, and 245's all the way around.

The fastest I've taken the TL is 135 mph and she was PLANTED to the road. Even during abrupt lane changes it didn't hesitate. Steering, imo, feels looser (not bad - just not as taut as normal) @ higher speeds, but that could be bc ur covering a LOT more ground in a LOT less time than usual.

Smile Wow, Great response!

Great response guys! That link to TLFOURPLAY was just what the doctor ordered!

Many thanks to TLFOURPLAY for posting and sharing that! It brought back some great memories.

I was stationed in southern Italy for 2 years and would rent BMWs and Alfa Romeos for five hour runs to Naples via the Autostrada. The Autopista in Spain was no disapointment either! Only wish I had made it up to Germany for a blast on the Autobahn.

It appears the consensus for high speed stability is the TL is fairly stable at the upper regions. I noticed that TLFOURPLAY didn't have any trouble with one hand on the wheel and the other holding the camera while bumping the speed limiter
