How do you remove black ink from leather?

The 7 year old nephew of my best friend was sitting in the back seat of my 05 TL with Quartz interior and found a black ink ball-point pen that was in one of the seat back pockets. He wrote his first name about 10 times in a row on the middle seat before I noticed what he was doing.

Any tips or tricks for removing black ink from a quartz interior?

The pics are just for the amusement factor, if nothing else. If I was Road Rage, I'd tell you to go here, http://www.townsendleather.com/
But, I'm not Road rage, sorry I can't help you. What I can suggest is you never let that little bastard back into your car.

Well i didnt believe it until i got it in the mail. But try the majic eraser by Mr. Clean. Although you can order a free sample from their website, it takes weeks, mine took more than a month to arrive. I saw those at a CVS pharmacy and i strongly recommend to use that. All it is, is a sponge like material, you moisten in with water and scrubbing you go. Good luck.

I second the Mr. Clean Magic Eraser. You can find them just about anywhere for just a couple dollars.

I had ink from a plastic grocery bag (I think) transfer onto the seat back of my Parchment passenger seat. The Magic Eraser removed the entire stain in just a few light strokes. Just make sure you reapply leather conditioner after you are done.

I had the exact same situatuion. Infact the transfer was so clear i could actually read it, although it was inverted.

Good luck with your ink situation though MisterLawyer.

Lemon extract. Get it at your grocery store. I once spent a summer working for a company that serviced office machines. They would come in with ball point pen ink all over them (you'd be surprised what some gals write when they're bored). A little lemon extract on a cloth and it would be gone.

A friend sat down with a couple pens in my 325ci and left several marks in the seat, I tried everything from goo gone to hairspray and only damaged the texture of the leather. The ink was not affected at all. Believe it of not the pen marks disappeared after a few weeks. I wouldn't try anything too drastic just yet, give it a little time and it may go away on it's own

Magic Eraser with Lexol cleaner or Woolite.
I did an exp on the old seat cover.

Before:

Half way

Done:

Just make sure you use some slippery detergent and be gentle (don't rub too hard).
By the way, it took 10 seconds to get that stain out.

To me, it just looks like the seat was still wet in that area, and you're seeing glare reflecting from the wet surface. All in all, it looks like Novice's solution worked perfectly.

However, in MisterLawyer's case, I'd be less concerned with the ink and more with the indentations that the kid may have left in the leather. 7-year-olds aren't known for their light touch with writing instruments. He probably pressed down pretty hard with that pen. Hopefully, the pen didn't leave permanent indentations that will still show up after the ink is gone. Still, that'd be less noticeable than the dark ink, so first things first, I guess.

Good luck, MisterLawyer. Let is know how it turns out. Some before/after pics like Novice posted would be nice if you find a good solution.

Well I didn’t read all the responses but I was labeling cds with permanent marker and marker fell on the seat. So I had a half an inch line, I quickly grabbed lexol cleaner and conditioner and removed it.

OxyClean that comes like a blue-ish gel in a spray bottle. i've never tried it on leather, but it pulled out ink from my 4runner's door panel (it's like that velour type of material).

The only two products that literally "melt" ball point pen ink are the product RoadRage mentioned made by Townsend Leather, and another product called "Spineybeck". I've used both, and they are excellent. If the ink is fresh, it will almost disolve before your eyes.

After all these suggestions, maybe someone should run a 'consumer reports'-style test.

Thanks guys! This forum rocks!

Here's my tip: First, have the 7 year old sit in the grass. Then, tell grandma what he did.

Well, I tried that, but grandma wouldn't kick him. I even showed her the movie, but she simply refused. Thanks for the suggestion though!

I know lots of stuff about a lot of stuff....there is more to Oil Man than, well, oil.

I gotta stop the free advice, counselor, and go on retainer - haven't even received a courtesy recog in days. Cheesh.

Long version:
Seriously, I found that my wife had left my golf umbrella ON the rear seat leather, then parked it in the hot Virginia sun. The dark green brolly (matches my DGP - yes, I am that anal) color migrated to the center of the rear seat cushion - almost an inch long! Simple soapy water, Meguiar's, and Lexol did nothing, and I did not want to use even the slightest abrasive material. Then i remembered I had the Townsend kit, of which i had previously only used the wipes and conditioner. Not expecting much, I used the little "chap stick" dealy and slowly worked it back and forth as directed. It was not instantaneous, but sure enough, after a few minutes, nearly all the dye had transferred off - there was just a tiny residue that I thought i could live with, but when i drove the car the next day, all traces had gone!

Short version: The Townsend Leather people know their shiznit. Highly Recommended.
