The bracket needs to stay intact on the exhaust.

I've got my eyes on another exhaust down the road.

When I swapped my j-pipe, I had a ton of rust on those bolts and flanges as well. I've only skimmed the thread, but if you're adding an aftermarket j-pipe, just cut those bolts off or kill them with fire. Use the supplied bolts and call it a day.

Oh and be sure to clean the rust off the flange that will be mated to your new j-pipe. Make sure the area is flush as to not create any potential exhaust leaks

Thanks for the advice. What did you use to cut them off? I was thinking I might be able to do it without dropping the whole exhaust if I use a reciprocating saw or a 4" grinder.

A grinder should do the trick. You definitely won't need to drop the whole exhaust.

OP, I find all of the threads you start very informative, please continue. Do not mind the guys on here with 99.9% activity ratings, they are probably all vigins anyway.

Hah, now that is funny. Do you see any sides to these bolts where I can even get a socket on them? I already tried chiseling them and hitting them with a hammer after heating them up and basting them with PB blaster.

Honestly, you sound like you should just take it to a shop to do it for you.

You laugh at everyones suggestions, and sound unwilling to try anything other than have them come off with magic. This stuff is very common in areas that use salt in the winter. I've removed bolts that looked worse without much effort. Nobody can tell you a magic way to get them off. If you can't get a socket on them, use a damaged bolt remover. If that fails, cut or grind them off. You can try to pound a smaller socket on if you want. You don't really have any other options besides turn them off, or cut them off. The fact that you are reusing the catback is irrelevant, its not that hard to cut 3 bolts off and wiggle a bit. Just try and avoid severely damaging the flange and it shouldn't be an issue. The fact that you question if this method will work makes me question your ability to get it done.

Your new J-Pipe should be coming with new nuts and bolts. Take it to a muffler shop and get them cut off. If you look at the Acura Diagram you'll see the the Studs for the cat have a part number and can be replaced individually.

mine didn't look nearly that bad and I still had to use a pump jack on a 16" breaker bar to get them off. it was a bitch.

I would suggest using a plasma cutter, had to use it on some bolts of mine.

Bang off as much rust as possible. Heat with a torch, propane is fine. Then hammer on an SAE impact socket and go to town with a heavy duty impact. That's what I always did with my rusty exhaust bolts. They will either come apart correctly or sheer the bolt right off and you can pound out the rest of the pressed-in stud. Then replace with a new bolt/washers.

The studs on the cat are pressed in, I removed them for my in-line electric cutout that I use for a silencer.

Mine was rustier than that but the OP was indifferent about my suggestions

A shop is his best bet if he doesn't want to cut or use a torch on it.
