How crazy would I be?

So I'm working a deal to trade my '06 TSX 6MT in on an '04 TL 5AT with Nav. My TSX has about 8k miles on it, the '04, while certified, has 40k. How crazy am I?

The long story short is that I forgot how annoying "shifting my own gears" could be in bumper to bumper traffic everyday. We all make mistakes, but what do you guys think? Right now the price on the TL is 25,100 or so, but we're just getting started so to speak, and considering the amount they are giving me for the TSX (23.5k), I think we are close to an agreement.

Your ?

that would be sorely tempting. test drive the tl? listen for rattles? did they update the navi? see what other goodies they can throw in like all weather mats.

if you really have the need for an auto, then I say go for it.

I've driven it - it has one rattle which they are looking at Monday morning. I told him to fix the rattle, clean it up (couple of scratches, etc), and then we'd talk again. That's a good idea on the Navi disc, I think I may pitch that to them and see what they say. At the very least, a 2005 disc would be good, as I think they upgraded the Columbia map then.

I went there with the intention of driving an auto TSX and seeing how much I would lose in the deal. I ended up driving the TL, and although I originally thought it was too old, I was very pleased with how it drove. Being an Acura, the age and mileage isn't much of a concern, so I decided to give it a shot.

I also test drove a G35 this morning - a leftover '06. Nice car, thought we had a deal, but apparently not. After driving the TL though, I'm glad, as I was really giving up some features going from the TSX to the G35 - not so with the TL obviously.

The only negative on the TL versus the TSX is the lack of a built in AUX input for my iPod. I don't really have time or skill to install something myself, so I'm going to have to explore what options are out there. Doesn't seem like people like the MusicLink alternative. I've got an old PhatBox sitting around, so maybe I can entice an installer to do one of the other alternatives for a trade.

Have to ask. In what part of South Carolina do you live/commute? I live just outside of Northern Virginia (most people would say my area is in Northern Virginia). I have an '04 manual TL and would never consider trading it for an automatic (I also have an '05 automatic TL, but it's the wife's car).

The reason I ask the question is that it's kinda hard to imagine any South Carolina cities or towns being more conjested than Northern Virginia.

I would hold out and say 'let's trade straight up'..... you impress on them it is TWO years older and 30 plus K more miles....

I would think they would take the deal if you were willing to walk...

keep it and sale it yourself, Don't do it trade it. After selling it, then buy a TL.

i don't think it's a good trade. don't go from a 06' to an 04'. i'm sure you can get an 05' with low miles for your 06' tsx. good luck.

Columbia. There are also family/wife reasons at play here, but I don't need to get into all that.

I'm thinking I'm going to shoot for very close to an even trade. The problem is that around here, the market isn't that big, so I can't get more than 23.5k on trade - I've tried numerous places, and actually Acura was higher than everyone else. I have tried to sell it a bit, but no one wants a MT around here.

There is an '05 with lower miles around here, but they are asking $28k for it. I probably could get them down $1500 or so, but it still substantially more for not much difference.

An interesting side note is that whether via mistake or whatever, the car I'm looking at is listed online for 23,995... they told me to print it, bring it in, and we'd go from there. I've dealt with them in the past, and they've always been straightforward, so I don't think there was ill-will involved there.

The TSX is a dog. The only 4-cylinder car I would pay over $25,000 for is this http://www.lotuscars.com/

Go for the TL

For what it's worth.. I love South Carolina. The wife and I plan to move there some time in the future. We are both native Virginians with long Southern histories and traditions, so I suspect the fit will be fine. We travel there several times each year.

Wait a second...you've got Southern histories? I would have never guessed.

This just in: I like Metallica.

I said it stickered at $28k. And I have looked around, there just isn't much here. Nonetheless, I don't pay sticker, so I'm sure I could get it down close to that. But that's without nav - the '04 has nav and is still a couple of thousand less.

^ Keep in mind that cars have different values in different parts of the nation/world. I think he said already that he can get the car he wants for $25,100.

I would agree to an extent, though, that it seems like he could find a better deal. Then again, I live in California, not South Carolina.

Bingo. And actually, 25,100 is just below where we started on the '04 TL w/Navi, but I think they will be coming down to around 24 even if not a clean swap at 23.5k. The internet price is 24k - and whether or not it is a misprint, we're at least going to chat about it. Perhaps if they will do some things like remove the rear wing properly, update the nav, take the warranty out to 100k...maybe then we'll talk about 24.5 or so, but not until.

The area is the key though - the market here just doesn't allow me to be as picky about values. We do the best we can, but when there are only a few players in town, or for that matter, in the state, it makes it difficult. PPV in this area (according to KBB) for an '05 with 28k miles is $26,500.

Weak!

Now what are you going to do? What about selling your TSX private-party and getting the most you can out of it, then using that money to buy the TL? Does that work for you, financially/otherwise?

I'm certainly going to give that some thought. My only concern is if a ready buyer comes along and I can't find a car to replace mine right away, I may be up a creek. But I suppose I could drop my wife off every morning for a week or two if absolutely necessary.

Extremely disappointed in the dealership right now. Salesman gives the line "I can't control what is sold." ...

As a side note, the '05 at a nearby dealership (not Acura), has been involved in a car accident according to CarFax, so I'm staying away from it. It appears to be in great shape, but...

To: Gomezine - $28,800 for an 2006 TL ? This must not have the chrome rims. Is that correct?

Just got back from driving to NC. Bought an immaculate '05 from a private party. 15k miles, Navi, not a single scratch.

Anthracite on Dark Tan (looks darker than parchment). 'Twas a good thing after all.

Gomezine - You have an interesting car market. I've run all kinds of values -- no way you'd get an '06 w/ Navi for 28 here - you'd be looking at 30 from a private party.

i would look around more for a better deal i've seen them out there for 25,000. It's way better to get a loan from your bank and buy it from a private party. There are alot of people out there trying to just get ride of the car for various reasons. There lost your gain.

Well the prices were good 5 months ago when I was buying the car

Thanks for the late welcome though. Despite the minor accident, car is going well today, w/ just 22,800 miles on the clock. Looking back, there was a small dent that didn't seem as bad when I got it that I probably should have knocked $500 off for, to $27,500, but otherwise, the deal was unbeatable AT THE TIME.

Carry on.
