How Acurate is the MPG info?
How Acurate is the MPG info?
I just brought back my new 2005 TL (Auto) from the dealer. The trip was a little over 200 miles. When looking at the MPG info on the trip computer it said I was getting 30 miles per gallon for the trip. I reset everything before leaving and filled it up with gas. I have not had a chance to fill it up yet because the tank is still half full. Just wondering how accurate the MPG computer is?
I have found mine to be very accurate. I have had my car one year today, and when I first got it I would check the mpg by dividing the gallons used into the miles driven, and the MID always gave the same results. Now I occasionally check it, and I find it is still very accurate.
Remember, when it says 24, it could be 23.6 to 24.4, so if you want to know exactly, you will have to do your own calculations, but this reading is good enough for me.

I have found mine to be quite accurate actually. If I take it easy on long highway drives, I do as well as 31 MPG. In the city, I average 17-19 usually depending on how I drive. I think you'll find that yours should be fairly accurate as well.
Congratulations on the new ride, enjoy the car, and welcome to the forum!

This info is excerpted from a very long thread I started about fuel tank capacities, etc. and is based on actual and precise testing
a. When the low fuel warning light comes on, if you are getting 25 mpg you can go 94 miles, but if you are only getting 20 mpg, you can only go 74 miles. Of course, other miles per gallon figures will result in different results. This means you have approximately 3.7 gallons remaining.
b. When miles to empty reads zero, that is time to fill up, but you can still go 57 miles at 25mpg, but only 45 miles at 20mpg. This means you have approximately 2.3 gallons remaining.
c. When filling the tank, if you stop at the first shutoff, you will have about 17 gallons in the tank.
d. The tank will actually hold about 19 gallons, but it is not recommended to fill the tank to capacity, so stop at the first shutoff.

Ron,
Funny the timeliness of this post. For the first time I thought I was going to be footing it home...Friday (2/11) after work - too lazy to fill up and decided to push it. Between heavy Friday traffic etc. sure enough fuel light comes on. So I switch over to Miles to Empty and for some sick reason decided to watch it tick off. I was able to make it home and to the gas station, it said 23 Miles to Empty when I got there, but yet the car only took 13.732 gallons to fill??
I got 28 MPG - so I thought there would only be another gallon left - and would have expected a 16 or 17 gallon fill-up. While this is fine by me - cause know I know when the light comes on I do not have to veer across 3 lanes traffic just to fill up...I have more than I think.

At your situation, the fact is your TL could only fill up 13-14 gallons no matter what "Miles to Empty" shows to you. While your low fuel gauge hits low, the light is on. Also, the short average MPG would decide what to display on your MID. Your long term MPG "28 MPG" (between two reset points/the whole tank of gas/this trip) isn't really the factor for "Miles to Empty".
Sometimes, for this mater, it's just easy to get confused.
