For this the city can definitely be blamed, don't those poles have to come off on impact, isn't that the design???

One extra star wasn't going to stop this. The TL is a very safe vehicle, it just happened to have all odds against it in this case.

My guess is that if the Benz hit another Benz in the same way, we would have the same result.

unfortunate for all the people involved... im sure this wasnt intentional and the people who lived have to live with knowing they killed someone because of stupidity....something which was totally avoidable. i hope their license gets taken from them forever.

This is a horrible accident. I still cannot believe the pictures. My friend lives a few blocks up from where this happened, and I've always hated parking my car on that road because people fly by at such ridiculous speeds. It's very scary to read things like this.

Quick sum up of the facts for people too lazy to read or even watch the video:

* The TL was hit by Benz coming off the highway.
* The TL hit the end of a guard rail (clearly evident in the pictures) near the middle of the car.
* The TL split in half and both passenger and driver were killed.
* The Benz driver was taken to the hospital with minor injuries.
* The Benz driver has been placed under arrest though not yet charged.

The pole is the aluminum type which are made to sheer off at the base when hit. The pole has no visible damage. It appears the it was the rail which inflicted the damage to the TL.

The Benz driver is likely looking at spending a substantial amount of time in prison. Sure better than being late to work, eh?

the really unfortunate thing is it usually takes an accident like this to make a change to an intersection, be it trimming a hedge or installing a traffic light.

At only 17 years of age, that Merc driver will have a lot of years to think about what he was responsible for

That really sucks. Hope it was no one from here. There's a lot more to say, especially about the Mercedes driver but I'll save it for another time.

Sooo sad to see this. My deepest sympathies to the familes of all involved, including the Merc driver. How many times have we all done stupid stuff and got away with it?

If we could only learn and prevent such tragedies

I think any car would have split in half with that kind of impact, and the way it hit the guard rail. The pole didn't fall/break because only half the car hit it at a much slower speed. They really need to do something there with the trees, and stricter speed limits. RIP

The 17-year-old driver of Mercedes Benz, Jacob Chubalashzili.

Can anyone say that last name 10 times fast, let alone pronounce it?

Now you know why insurance rates for under age 25 drivers are so high.
No doubt the resulting lawsuits will be well into the $millions.

I live right by there and that's the exit to my house. The light is a good 1/2 to 3/4 of a mile from the highway exit and the MB driver was probably flooring it for that distance trying to beat that light.

Thank you to you and the others who payed attention to the video. The last thing needed here is the spread of misinformation. Lightpoles are designed to move, guardrail endcaps are not. This is a true tragedy, nothing less. Just another case where the innocent pay for the stupidity of the guilty. Unfortunately, like everything else, it will be glossed over by the next big news story and everyone will forget. Whether the driver and passenger of the TL are members or not, let us not forget them. Pray for thier families and never feel like you are invincible.
