HID fog lights please help!

im new to this forum and just bought my 08 tl-s in October. I want to install HID purple fog lights (probably h8 12k). Anything I've searched or read has me nothing but confused about this process. I just want to know if i need to purchase a converter kid for HID lights, and if so which one should I get? Most threads I've read suggest to get a converter kit, but someone i know installed these fog lights on his tl and did not purchase a converter kit (so they say). I just want to do this properly without wasting time, money, or screwing anything up. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated

Welcome to the forum.

The forum where you originally posted, The AcuraZine User Help, Support & Suggestions Area , is meant for problems, comments, and suggestions for the website itself, so I moved your thread to the car specific forum applicable to your vehicle.

You don't need a converter kit but it's highly suggested for you to use a relay harness for safety.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/HID-kit-with-Relay-Harness-880-H1-H4-H7-H8-VVME-/260679774321?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item3cb1b9b071&vxp=mtr
That is everything and exactly what you need. The fog light is a H8 size. That seller has bulbs in all colors so when you check out put this in the message box

"The buyer must include the following info in PayPal's "Note To Seller" section or send us an email or eBay message:

√ Bulb Type - H8
√ Color Temperature - 12000K
√ Telephone Number"

Welcome! If you want to install an HID kit in your halogen foglamp housing, you'll have to decide if you don't care that you're being a dick to other drivers. The reason is that halogen housings are designed to aim halogen bulbs, and projectors are designed to aim HIDs. If you don't use projectors, the bright light will really annoy and possibly blind others on the road.

To avoid this, you'll want to retrofit HID projectors in your fog lamps. Lots of good info on this site: http://www.theretrofitsource.com/

Some people do it anyway though and they say it's not that bad. I just wanted to caution you.

Lower fogs are fine to run HIDs in. You don't need a relay harness either. I've been running mine for a year now without any problems or flickering

the stock wiring is not meant for anything but the stock bulbs.
by adding HID's you're changing amperage and the stock wire might not be capable of handling said amps.

do you wear condoms?
because its the same concept.

you might or might not get an STD going raw.
you might or might not get pregnant without an umbrella.

your car might or might not blow without a relay.
your car might or might not develop electrical gremlins without a relay

its for protection

Fine? No. Not as annoying as the upper fogs? Yes.

Especially if she goes with 6K or higher, the glare at night and/or in the rain will probably be insane to oncoming traffic.

In my opinion, a relay harness is unnecessary for most applications. That's coming from me, who works on lighting as a side job.

Think about it this way, if stock wiring isn't enough to handle HIDs, howcome the stock wiring for our headlights look exactly the same as the rest of the wiring on the car?

I'm aware there are cars that do need it, but on most cars I've worked on, and definitely TL's, do not need a relay harness for running HIDs on foglights.

Just my

funny because I remember there was another girl on here who had hid in her fogs and they worked perfectly without a relay harness for quite some time.

than one day she got in the car and it never worked again. she ended up frying part of her factory electrical wiring some how.

All it takes is one time and that's enough to cause a head ache. a relay harness is a $10 peace of mind compared to a $1,000+ wiring harness + labor to get it installed if something does go wrong

Always wear a condom. umbrella. glove. a cap. rubber. rain coat. a relay harness.

it's just for safety. and nothing to do with "if it works with or without one"
DOnt be silly, wrap your willy.

there's no need to insult girls like that.

for the record she took her car to a shop that installed the fog lights for her. I highly doubt the shop did anything wrong because I'm pretty sure the majority of the things they do to customers cars is install hid lights which is very easy

I had to install a relay harness on mine. The factory wires are too small and cannot handle such a large amperage draw. They would flicker side to side, or only one would come on at a time. Both were to much draw for the tiny factory wires. DO NOT INSTALL H.I.D. FOGS WITHOUT A RELAY HARNESS, YOU WILL MELT WIRES!!! Headlight wiring is different, but not fogs. Also, the fogs are low enough and do not blind anyone.

Just install LED fogs, no headache.

Seriously, I've had 6k LED fogs for two years now. Plug n play no issues. Why is everyone Parkouring their fog lights?

You sure they were 100W HID? If so, the relay harness and ballast are the least of your worries. You need new housings and sunglasses for any oncoming traffic.

Hi everyone, I'm new to this forum as well and new to the Acura family. I just bought my 08 TL Type-S last week and was looking at changing out my flood lights as well. Thanks to the OP for starting this thread because I had the same questions too. I'm a noob at this modding stuff, so sorry for the stupid questions ahead of time.

I was wondering if any of you guys could suggest a good type and good looking HID fog lights for a Carbon Bronze Pearl Type-S? Thanks in advance for the advice.

Thanks for the suggestions everyone. I will go ahead and get the relay harness- rather be safe than sorry. I will stick without a conversion kit since it sounds like I won't be needing that.

15,000K is really over kill.

Our TL comes with HID in our headlight low-beams from factory. Those are rated at 4,300K. It looks yellowish-white.

Step up to 5,000K and you get pure white. This is what I prefer.

Moving to 6,000K and you get white with a tinge of blue. I DO NOT RECOMMEND GETTING ANYTHING HIGHER THAN 6,000K FOR FOG LIGHTS.

8,000K is just really blue.

10,000K is royal blue

anything higher looks like barney.

Definitely not a fan of Barney... lol damn I wish i had more patience. I ended up buying 15000k. The seller had a chart and it didn't show it looking purplish. Guess I'll find out when I hook it up! Still new to the site, I think I should be able to post pics now that ive posted five times.. Thanks for the advice!

Omg dude 15000 is too much. TLs look sexy more with 8K or even 10k but again it's your preference. To keep me safe i put 8k all around except on my DRL

Headlights are meant to draw a good amount of current; therefore, the wires are around 14-16 gauge from the factory. Fog lights however do not draw as much current as they are smaller and not meant to be crazy bright. Remember, you have factory H.I.D. headlights, them manufacturer used a wire size that was suitable for the amount of current flow. Now you fog lights on the other hand are basic halogen bulbs. These bulbs do not require much amperage, probably less than 10 amps. I could do a test just to prove it if I wanted to prove a point, but don't think its worth my time to do all that. Here is a basic charge showing comparison between wires gauges and current flow. The higher the # the smaller the wires and fewer strands, obviously being able to carry less load.

there's no such thing as a 100w xenon bulb.

there's not even a 55w hid bulb.

a xenon bulb is just a xenon bulb. the ballast is what gives out 35w or some aftermarket has 55w ballasts.

100w hid bulb with no ballast sounds like false advertising and most likely fools the un educated.

I'm very sure that the bulbs you purchased are not true xenon bulbs but typical halogen bulbs that are advertised to be hid bulbs. you find those all over eBay for like $10-$20.

cheap stuff.

let's say factory fogs are 35w. by putting a 100w halogen in its place isn't going to do you any good. it's drawing nearly 3x the wattage.. it's possible to damage your factory wiring because they are so thin to begin with.

the only 100W hid ballast I know in existence is the supercharged ballast from retrofitsource. its custom made and even retrofitsource does not recommend it for daily driving. I assume they made it simply for bragging rights

On my 3G TL, I didnt run any relay as I'm using my stock foglight wiring off the car. So for me it is pretty much plug and play.

have fun!
