A difference...
I drove both when I bought my Type S last summer. The base TL rides noticeably smoother than the Type S. The only acceleration difference I noticed was when I really stepped into the throttle.
There's a big difference in the handling, though!

Before i got my 08 TL-S WDP, i test the base TL as well, i wanted a more sporty feel ride, Navi, backup camera, brembo, quad exhaust, carbon trims, better bolster seat, better looking wheels. and then i took it out for test drive, i like the pickup in the TLS and the brake feels more "solid" when im coming from a quick stop. then i look at the price, 2000 dollars = everything i listed above. Then i was sold on the Type S.

I think the difference is huge especially in light of the minor price difference. It is noticeably faster and it handles much better. Also, you can't beat the Brembos for stopping power. I imagine the resale value will be much better too. About the only think I don't like are the hideous gray wheels.

For me, I think the Type-S has much more "fun" acceleration than the base. Of course I also got the MT, so I can play with the gears a bit too. I do miss the RWD of my previous cars, but the Type-S is fun to drive. I too hate those gray wheels.
Now if you already have a base and were just planning on upgrading, I'd at least wait and see what the '09s are going to look like.

In my opinion, very little difference in pickup, but there is a bigger difference in the way the car drives, sounds and feels.

Driven both. Type-S does have a noticeable upper-hand on pick-up. The difference is 28bhp. That is what you pay for, along with the other amenities that come with the top-of-the-line unit. 28bhp for $2K is a HUGE bargain. Period. For anybody who debates between base and Type-S. It's a no-brainer. Not even a question. EVERY TIME.

ac08odl, you got some catch up to do.
The regular TL used to be measured at 270 hp. It's now 258. There is no change in physical power. The Type-S is now rated at 286 hp. 286 - 258 = what is it? I don't have the calculator. Somebody please help!!

and it's not just hp. There is a fair-some amount of increase in torque, which is very importantly.
But the final result in performance between the two are pretty small. Generally the 0-60 you get about 0.2~ 0.3 sec. Similar result at the quarter mile.

I own the '06 TL 6MT. I have beat quite a few '07 Type-S AT cars, both in 0-60 and triple digit speeds.
So if you want to get some serious powa, get the 6MT. It's more of the matter 6MT vs. 5AT rather than regular trim TL vs. Type-S.
The more of benefit you get from the Type-S is the handling/cornering. It uses factory sport-tuned suspension setup and stiffer springs. It uses solid anti-roll bar. It also comes with bigger discs and Mr. Brembo..... the regular trim 6MT uses Brembo also, and use "thicker" anti-roll bar which handles better than the regular trim TL 5AT.
JUST DON'T BUY 5AT. 5AT IS YOUR ENEMY!!!! poor handling and poor acceleration. I feel so good sprinting from 100~ 130 mph in no time. Tight gear ratios on the 6MT my friend..![Wink](https://acurazine.com/forums/images/smilies/wink.gif)

Here is a run down in acceleration performance from best to worst:
Type-S 6MT > Regular 6MT > Type-S 5AT > Regular 5AT
In terms of handling:
Type-S 6MT > Type-S 5AT = Regular 6MT > Regular 5AT
There is about 0.1~ 0.2 sec difference in the quarter mile between Type-S 6MT and Regular 6MT.
Regular 6MT spanks the crap out of the Type-S 5AT in the quarter mile.
Type-S 5AT is a lilly bit quicker than the Regular 5AT in the quarter mile.
GET THE 6MT.

To be precise, the Type-S 5AT should still edge out the Regular 6MT slightly, in *handling*. The suspension and steering is still slightly better. But when it comes to acceleration, eh eh, no. ![Wink](https://acurazine.com/forums/images/smilies/wink.gif)

I drove both before I pulled the trigger on a type-s last year ... to me it's def. worth the extra $$ ... the perf. & cosmetic upgrades from the base will keep me happy for a few more years ....

Of course if you got the regular you can mod it to be better than the TL-S, and get the supercharger to make it faster.

Before the change the Acura 3.2L TL was rated at 270 HP.
After the change the exact same car/engine was rated at 258 HP.
The new measurements are better standardized so that HP comparisions are more apples-to-apples.
The Base TL, under the new system is 258 HP; the 3.5L TL-S, also under the new system is 286. 28HP difference.
BTW - all HP is measured at the Crankshaft. Wheel HP is usually ~15% - 20% lower.

I'm not sure that things are so cut-and-dried.
Here is some published data:
Road & Track 2007 TL-S, 6MT: 0-60 = 5.7 sec; 1/4 Mile = 14.3 @ 99.9
Road & Track 2004 TL A-Spec, 6MT: 0-60 = 6.2 sec; 1/4 Mile = 14.8
Lightly Modded Member Posted Times (more highly modded TL's are faster):
SleeperPnoy04 TL-S; 6MT - 1/4 Mile = 14.14 @ 98.56 - (Short ram intake//stock resonator delete)
Bearcat94 TL-S, 5AT - 1/4 Mile = 14.37 @ 97.12 (P2R TB Spacer//H&R Sports//Stock AS Tires)
Stock (AFAIK) Posted Elsewhere (http://www.dragtimes.com/Acura--TL-Drag-Racing.html) :
2005 TL, 5AT - 1/4 Mile = 14.59 @ 96.8
2004 TL, 5AT - 1/4 Mile = 14.78 @ 94.4
I know there are a lot of variables and probably more data out there, but based on this it looks like the 1/4 miles are:
TL-S 6MT > TL-S 5AT > TL 6MT > TL 5AT
I also think the 0-60 of the TL 6MT (6.2 sec) is VERY close the TL-S 5AT 0-60. Unfortunately finding reliable 0-60 times on the AT is difficult.

Yes, you can make a regular trim 6MT go 0-60 in 6.2 sec and quarter in 14.8 if you leave the VSA On and parking break jacked up. You can take a Ferrari Enzo to take off from 0-60 in 7 sec and 17 sec in quarter mile. It depends on the driver and your willingness to WOT and change gear and clutch at right speeds/rpm. Hell, I can take my TL 6MT to take off 0-60 in 9 sec and quarter in 20 sec..... See the drift?

The regular trim TL 6MT is capable of 0-60 in 5.7 sec and 14.2 sec in quarter mile. That is stock. There is no way in hell a Type-S 5AT stock do quarter in 14.2 sec. If you get 15 sec then consider yourself great.

Bearkat, let me re-examine your quote.
I remember reading you posted that drag time in the Racing Stories section on this forum. I have heard that the track you have run your car is really good. Many drivers were getting great result from that track, which is helping your time as well. I remember you also removed the spare tire from the trunk. You removed the floormats as well. Those floormats weigh a ton!! Everything counts, which of course smart thing you did. So you definitely know the weight reduction is very important. Even with your mod, reduced weight, nicely prepped track, the regular trim 6MT is still faster in the quarter.... and beyond that speed. The 6MT traps high speeds in the quarter too.

Bearcat94 TL-S, 5AT - 1/4 Mile = 14.37 @ 97.12 (P2R TB Spacer//H&R Sports//Stock AS Tires)

Precisely, and very reasonably, the Type-S 5AT should do 14.8 sec in the quarter mile.
The reason why you don't see TL/Type-S AT acceleration numbers in the reviews is because the Auto tranny on the TL cars are severely handicapped by their increased weight and most importantly, tall gear ratios and with 1 gear missing. The performance is much worse than the 6MT version that's why they don't post the numbers for the AT. Also the AUTO tranny takes away more power from the engine due to torque converter. The Type-S AT weighs nearly 3700 lbs too, which is too heavy. I think it's 3670 lbs to be precise..... Not good.

If you want to improve your Type-S AT in acceleration you need to at least take out those factory wheels(they are not heavy, but ain't the greatest) and put on some high-performance carbon fiber or magnesium wheels. Those are super-light. Remove the rear seats. Remove the spare tire and all its tools. Remove the engine cover and empty out the windshield washer fluid. Washer fluid weighs a ton! You need to do some diet. 140 lbs would be perfect. Avoid eating junk food and have small amount of meal 3~ 4 times a day. Never skip meals!!! No Coke!
You know... my TL 6MT is so fast and light that even the latest model BMW 535xi couldn't take me when he was chasing my ass from 50mph~ 100+. I was pulling from him slowly, actually. That BMW driver got so embarrassed that he stayed far back and didn't get near me after what happened. He thought that since my TL is the standard version and assumed that mine is an AUTO. So he thought he could smoke me.
I was like laughin' my fanny off.... Oh man...

I think we're getting a little off topic here. And we're both interested in having the *best* car - it's human nature.
In general, there is a lack of sufficient data to absolutely prove either arguement.
1. - There are too many variables in self-reported times/trials/races;
2. - There is little or no open source published info on the Auto's;
3. - The published open source info on times year-to-year, trim-to-trim or source-to-source are run under different conditions.
Suffice to say I am not 100% convinced. Drop by The Rock and we'll have a run-off - best 3 of 5.

One of the members here has posted official time slips for his TL/6MT. Its lightly modded with a CAI etc & he was running 13.9's.
Don't remember the speed but it was around 100mph.
