Gumout
Gumout
I know there's probably no need for Gumout Fuel System Cleaner for our newer TLs, but I'm wondering the following:
1. Has anyone used it in their TLs? If so, how was the experience?
2. Has anyone used it in a much older car, like say a 1995 or something? I'm asking because I'm wondering just how much it would help... Also it would be good to know this once my TL does get past 7 or so years old...
Thanks!

Actually- if you buy cheap "big box store" type gas- you need fuel cleaner all the time
IN just 5000 miles crud is built up on the valve stems and body- not good
Use of Seafoam $8 (gen 2- Seafoamed the Ol TL) will cure buildup in the intake and injectors
Some prefer regular use of name brands like Lucas or Redline- just use something every 5000 and keep car running best.
Gas prices what they are- anything I can do to make better combustion is the right thing to do!

find a vacuum line and pour it in there. I haven't looked under the hood of my TL under great scrutiny but there should be a big brake line near your brake booster.
Additionally Sea Foam can be added to the gas tank or to the oil.

I have 32000 miles on my 2005 TL, and i have used Gumout and Techcron few times. but i don't feel any difference after adding those cleaners. i don't know the reason why i can't see any change is because my TL's system is clean, or they simply don't work. by the way, i always use Mobil or Shell gas.
The problem is people dont read the super fine print on those products so they dont work at pek performance- toss a bottle of techroline in...not good enough
Like seafoam says 1/3 can in tank of gas- except the fine print says 1 oz per gal of fuel for maitenance cleaning- 2 oz per gal for super cleaning
thats why I say 1 pint can in 1/4 tank gas
Undo the plastic covers on your gen 3 and find a vac line
have fun!

Maybe a DIY if you need to do yours again
I am a gen2 owner and there is a 15 page thread Seafoamed the Ol TL in that forum
Gen 3 I am guessing similar vac line routing- so much plastic underhood for you guys I only got to the brake master I needed to find- and stopped there!
Seafoam is the exact same stuff they use in the fuel injection cleaning machines for 59-129$
Its a solvent you get right into the engine to clean valves and pistons and thru the gas tank it gets the fuel injectors to clean the spray pattern
Most of the products avaialable are similar idea- have to read things like, treats 10-21 gallons- and understand that means use min. dilution possible for best results
Going on a long trip- toss a can in the full tank- it will help that way too- the more concentrated the better

Don't get too overly excited about fuel additives, as it even states on the Chevron site, maker of Techron, that if you use their gasoline, or I'll inject, any name brand gasoline this day and age, you won't need to use the additive.
If you read the chevron website CLOSELY it says they only put a maitenance dose in the pump mix and if used all the time will eventually clean the system
And they say to use their full strength bottle of techroline from parts store to really clean everything first~
There are reasons we need special cleaners in our cars- its not PR BS- its a real life issue and gas is going to keep getting more expensive- especially our 91+ needs
Many similar products- seafoam is the stuff industry uses in the real machine- but it only runs fuel with cleaner in the fuel loop- missing the valve tops- which we get via the intake vac line

Q-Do I need to use Techron® Concentrate if I buy only Chevron gasoline?
A-If you're a loyal buyer of exclusively Chevron gasolines, your car very likely is delivering its best possible performance and operating at its lowest possible emissions. A bottle of Techron® Concentrate, therefore, is not likely to provide any benefits. However, if you sometimes purchase a lower quality gasoline, you should try Techron® Concentrate to quickly restore performance lost due to deposit accumulation.
Tell me that's not a marketing statement. Use our gasoline and no additive needed, but Techron will restore performance and lost power if a lower quality fuel is used. Yeah right!
Here we go again. I say it's nothing more than a waste of money using fuel additives. I've put close to 1.5 million miles on vehicles, owned a fleet of cars, and have never experienced and injector or the phenomenal engine buildup problems. How many people, if name brand fuel is used, have had an injector or valve buildup problem that sidelined their car? None that I know of. Have had an injector malfunction, but that was a mechanical failure not due to fuel quality.
Save your money!

so are Mobil and Shell low quality fuels?

Let me add, that over the years I have found fuel additives to be a money maker for the manufacturers, as they just don't work miracles. Having said that, can they be harmful, no, and if one feels that the engine performs better when using the additive, all well and good.
I'll leave it there.
