GTO vs 2007 type s

own a 1996 TL, and I always found it to be fast, uptill last month.
When I bought a new GTO.
It was around 10 in the nite, and I was cruzin down the I-10 near santa monica when I noticed those blue lights gaining up fast switching lanes. I moved into the right lane and the flyin rocket slows down rite nex to me. It was a 07 type S and looked pretty nice.
I looked I look over and theres this guy with his galfriend/wife? some female. So i go up to approx 85mph from 70 something and he's stuck behind traffic.

5 mins later I am sittin on the PCH right nex to the santa monica beach and guess what I see the same blue/silver lights comin up. The lights go green and the guy rolls past me and as i look to the left his gals smilin/laughin and that was it. I followed him close (traffic) and a mile down we find ourselve on the lights again. THis time and he's revving, (I thoughtthe TypeS was automatic, so he was doin it in neutral??) So when the lights turn GO. I hear his tires chirppin....I let him go but only for a couple of feet as I am gently lettin the torque build up. And soon enough I put bus lengths on him and a few seconds later he's a couple of zipcodes far (i hit 130).

soon enough he gained back. and now we're talkin (crusin at 45mph nota soul around) Turns out to be pretty cool and tells me, wanted to show his galfriend what a GTO could do, to his Type S and so ignited the whole thing. And I tell him his car was my nex dream machine and I still had a 96 TL, untill I found out the 07 type S was too expensive and bought a GTO for half the money. I was surprised. He was shocked.

I raced a couple GTOs with my 2nd Gen CL-S (I/H) and I got destroyed. What times do GTOs run in the 1/4 mile?

i am pretty much new to this 1/4 mile concept

however my other forum www.ls2gto.com, people talk abt gettin 12 with modded and around mid 13's non modded. All I know is taht its a 4 dr corvette or maybe 90% corvette. same engine and same suspension..

I wish TL was a RWD....won't have gone to the GTO

Even if the TL were RWD, it would never have the level of raw hp and torque that the GTO has.

thanks people

I dont know how fast it goes, unmodded, however at 130mph it felt like it could go on and on. Evo and Sti. Evo could be a drivers race with the GTO gettin a bit of advantage. STI shd be chicken.

However from the forums I've been on, there hardly seems any GTO, without any mods...and the mods increase the performance exponentially. yeah it was a kill, an easy one. Thanks.

The 2006 GTO has 400hp and 400lb/ft of torque, vs the TL's 286hp and 256lb/ft of torque. No Contest at all even if the GTO is 300lbs heavier (3500 vs 3800).

But anyhow, the GM stopped selling them I believe since the summer in 2006 due to poor sales. I guess it's because it's a bit too expensive for a Pontiac and fans of American Muscle cars don't like the fact that it's not really an American car since it's from Australia (Holden).

According to C

According to C&D, the old GTO (350hp LS1 engine) can do 0-60mph in 5.3 sec and 1/4mile in 14 sec. The newer model with 400hp should be able to do the above in 5 sec and mid to high 13's. So I still think Lan Evo (Japanese model) and STi are faser at least up to 1/4mile (both Evo and STi can do the 1/4mile in less than 13's stock according to Best Motoring)

GM stopped selling the GTO because Holden stopped producing the Monaro. GTO=Monaro. Monaro was being discontinued anyway. GM imported roughly 40,000 cars between 2004 and 2006. Suprisingly sales were very good.

From what I've read so far, the deletion of GTO was mainly because of poor sales.

I see what you mean by magazine racing never works, but at least it provides some insight into he performance of each car. I mean the same thing can happen to any car too. For example, 1/4mile in 14s for GTO in C&D, but 13s from the top drivers; this I think can happen in any car. Anyways, I do agree that 14 sec for a 350hp GTO sounds too slow, even a TL-S can do that with much less power.

The GTO has 2 doors...

Do you have the 6spd MT or the 4spd AT? What year?
You bought a "new" GTO. New GTO's go for about $36k.. Type S' go for about $39k (just to be safe). How did you gather that you bought a GTO for half the price of a Type S?

the GTO's go for 24k i know this for a fact because i just went to the dealer with my dad to test drive one and they are asking 24k for them but this is easily negotiable as my dad was able to get them to let it go at 23,750 but in the end we did not buy it but more or less just wanted to see the car.

The GTO was never intended to live longer than three years in America. 2004, 2005 and 2006 was it.

You have to remember, the Monaro in current form was built on the same platform since the mid 1990's. It was end of life in the first place.

Most of the American magazines will lead you to believe the car failed or that bad sales stopped GTO production. For the amount of cars produced and exported to america it sold quite well. But it was a doomed car from the very beginning.

One way or another, the GTO wasn't selling well according to GM's expectation.

GM admits it didnt sell well, why are you still trying to imply otherwise? It was a step in the right direction, hopefully the G8 will continue that.

I'm trying to say that people assume the GTO was axed because of slow sales.

The Monaro was dead anyway and thus a GTO couldn't continue in it's current shell past 2006.

Could it have done better? Sure...

But it wasn't dropped solely because the US market shunned it.

I agree that poor sales is not the only reason for the deletion of the GTO model. But it's definitely ONE of the reasons. I mean the sales of the GTO put Bob Lutz into embarrassment and he even lost his job as the boss of GM North America (He expected to sell 18000 units per year initially).

I wouldn't be surprised if the Monaro was built on an old platform, I mean, afterall, Holden is pretty much part of GM, and as we all know, GM is renowned for using old stuff (think pushrod, cavalier and sunfire, etc). Luckily, things are changing now and I hope that it's not too late (I'm quite impressed with some of the newer products coming from GM in fact).

In the end, I guess the question is, why did Holden discontinue the monaro and didn't bother making a new generation? Some of the reasons I can think of are gas prices have gone up(and still going up...), freetrade agreement means its advantage in price is less important, in other markets, it's priced only a bit cheaper than a M3 (10% in England), making it even less appealing since only its acceleration can match the M3 (when you compare image, handling, quality, refinement, depreciation rate, the M3 wins in every category). So in the end, you are right, the Monaro is doomed from day one if it's exported.

Holden got rid of the monaro in part for preparation of the new commedore/pontiac G8 which is said to be a very nice package.

the car had 31 miles and approx 2000 dollars of accessories And I got a free loJack and extended warraty and everything for including the sales TAX. for 27K. Now It happenned because after days of negotiating with six dealers accross LA. I selected a dealer and then at last moment made him lower the price further bby buyin two Brand new GTO's from him. (brought my boss in at the last moment) and paying all cash for one (my boss's).

Ok its not half the price
and okay its not double the power. An dits 2 doors.
but it is atleast 2/3 the price and 60% more power. We shdnt be talkin abt the torque.
and the TL still misses RWD. I have always been a huge fan of te TL, and Type-S was a disappointment, casue of no RWD. otherwise I might have owned one....or at;east kept dreaming abt one.

regards and Thanks

I have seen people referring to Sti's and Evo's but no one mentioned the Skylines. I think you get the Skylines stock running 400-500hp. And they have Skyline NISMO running somewhere around 800hp. Do a search for Skyline NISMO and check. I doubt Sti's, Evo's nor the Gto's stand a chance with the Skyline NISMO!

Yea, it's said that the new commodore has improved in every aspect excluding fuel consumption. It's even better than the BMW 5-series in terms of steering feel, which is a really good thing.

lol! it's because the skyline gtr is in another league of its own! There's no comparison at all! But the thing is, you can't find them here unless you are talking about the R32...which is sad...

A few Skylines have made it's way to the US market. But it's in the Grey market. Meaning Nissan America is not providing warrenty nor parts/support. Not sure why maybe politics. I have driven one while I was in Asia. Sick!!!!!!! Oh by the way it's an R34!! Baddassssssssssssss! New Skyline GT-R is coming out "V35" Twinturbo and shit. Once you get a full NISMO mod, forget about even seeing this baby anywhere on the road for more than a few split seconds. I think the R34 NISMO goes around $170,000-$200,000. Yup that's the price for that Nissan!

I dunno the reason but people in North America tend to not be able to get nice cars (think all those type r's, gtr's, silvia's, and many others). Most people say it's because of not enough demand here or it has to do with something about protect car makers here. Anyways, glad that you had the chance to drive such nice car!! How did get a chance to do that anyways? you had a friend there? or did you just visit a dealership? I have a Best Motoring clip showing the V35 GTR running on the ring, according to the host, that skyline should obtain a lap time of "well below 8 min." It will be interesting to see how the future Japanese top end sports cars are capable of!
