Got Some Work Done .... Finally.

Finally got around to some maintenance.

'07 TL-S. A bit over 5-years old. 63,000 miles.
  • Oil & filter change (Honda 15400-PCX-004 Filter & Pennzoil Ultra 5W-30);
  • Rotated the tires;
  • Replaced Rear Pads (RB ET300; I've got ET500 on the front);
  • Seafoam Treatment;
  • Replaced Spark Plugs;
  • New Wipers (Stayed with the Icon's because they were available).

It was HOT!!! :whew:

Runs like a frickin' top.

I also got to use my new (for Fathers Day) Brownline Digital Torque Wrench.

This thing is the shit. No more running to AutoZone to borrow a half-broke mechanical torque wrench. It's got a couple minor quirks, but it is SOOOOO easy to use. The audible alarm at proper torque is great .... especially when you can't monitor the display.

Get one (seriously): https://acurazine.com/forums/sponsored-sales-group-buys-10/digital-torque-wrench-fathers-day-special-859048/

No brainer at that price.

I need to do some work on mine also, but it's to damn hot out.

That is a sweet wrench, looks easier to use than mine, but I just bought a 3/8 and 1/2 drive one from harbor freight.

Just curious as to why you went with 5w30 instead of 5w20?

I am due for an oil change soon and have the same mileage and was thinking of going with 5w30 this time.

Personal preference.

I'm one of those that believe 5W-20 was recommended for marginal improvement in CAFE and that the higher viscoisty oil provides slightly more protective film.

or not , I don't know. But I've been on Mobil1-class 5W30 since something like the 2nd oil change.

Personally, I think the filter choice is more important than choosing between 5W-20 and 5W-30.

Seafoam treatment with only 64,000 miles? I don't even think that's necessary at all. Not even when you hit 100,000+ miles

Opinions vary. I think some advocate it much more often.

I think this is my second treatment since taking delivery.

Haha. Not too bad. 1 large-ish 'poof' and that was it. At least that's all I noticed.

I think 105k is the norm. People have said these plugs should last ~100k and I think they're right - the tips on the used plugs were sharp points and the plugs didn't seem to be fouled in any way. I think they would've lasted another 40k.

OTOH, I got the new ones cheap (comparatively).

The difference in viscosity between 5W-20 and 5W-30 is negligible once the engine reaches operating temperature. In the winter time when the engine takes a little longer to warm up, it MAY make a difference. Otherwise, it's just a black belt or brown belt type thing.

that's the one I was talking about earlier Steven, but at least if ours only work twice (which my 1/2 one has) we've gotten our moneys worth

It's about time you got some work done!! Yea, I need to Seafoam my CR-V, it's just over 102K right now. I'll have to do that before the tune-up.
It's a great feeling to do the maintenance yourself and feel how smooth she runs. Nice torque wrench I'm jealous.

I don't think you can seafoam too early. It may not do any good if it's earlier than later. But it's not likely going to do any harm either. And if you're replacing your plugs, you might as well spend the whopping $8-10 for a can of seafoam just for kicks and giggles.

I think 'it depends'.

What I did was used the OE pads as long as I had the OE rotors. When I changed to StopTech slotted rotors, I changed to the ET-series pads.

Personally it's my opinion that 'worn in' OE rotors will work best with OE pads. But that is just an unsubstantiated opinion.

I was going to stay out of it but too many people advocating seafoam. It's not neccessary, it's never neccessary. The smoke is from the seafoam itself burning, not whatever you guys think it cleans from inside of the engine.

Some 5w-20s are very close to the minimum acceptable HTHS rating. HTHS is directly related to wear. 5w-30 gives you a much larger safety cushion. No reason not to use it, several reasons to use it.

I would never buy a Harbor Freight torque wrench. I saw several demonstrations at my old work with cheap, average, and Snap-on torque wrenches on a machine that measures torque. I could guess by hand before I would use a cheap one. For non critical items, the one pictured in the first post is fine for most jobs. For critical items such as rebuilding an engine or even head bolts, I have a Snap-on just for that purpose that only gets used for that purpose.

I think you have a great combo now. Personally, if I had factory Brembos I would just do pads, leave the rotors stock unless you like the looks of the slotted ones. Unlike the 5at, the Brembos come factory with good rotors.

Nifty torque wrench.

I bought a really nice clicky type (not sure of the correct term) torque wrench from Matco a few years back. Probably my best tool investment. I was always wary of the digital ones though. They seem like something I would accidentally break, so I got a clicky one instead.

IHC, don't get me wrong, I'm definitely not going to be rebuilding any engines with my HF torque wrench. I bought the 1/2 drive only for my lug nuts after warping my factory rotors using a breaker bar. I will use the 3/8 drive for torquing bolts like oil drain, ATF drain, etc. Nothing that would be critical if its waaaay off.

I actually did some TL-S work. Gatrhumpy and I repaded the center console arm rest. It was a bit of work but came out beautifully. So no DIY, no time. But it's pretty easy.
