GM synchromesh transmission fluid?

I know there's a million threads on this already, but I just heard some conflicting info from the local GMC dealer.

I have always used the "friction modified" version part #12377916. I just called the local GMC dealer and they want $14/qt for that, but they want $18 for the regular non "friction modified" part #12345349. I always thought that the friction modified was more expensive, and that it was needed in our cars because of the limited slip differential. From what I've read the regular 12345349 fluid isn't meant for lsd cars, and you need to buy a special additive for $12 for 6oz to add to it.

you're over thinking this and making it even more complicated than what it should be.

stop thinking, you might hurt yourself.

the GM stuff has been superseded by a new part number, which is; AC Delco part 88900399

Since this thread was revived today I thought some peoples might find this link helpful. Just copy/paste that part# from previous posts above (88900399) in the Part Number Search field on the right of the screen and it will come up. It's $9.48 per qt on there and it looks like they sell it by the qt, so your not stuck buying 6 at a time (unless you want that many).

Note it says free shipping on there to, but they do charge a $9.99 handling fee so thats a wash. But still $38.43 to your door is pretty good. I'll probablly pick some up later this week.

Thanks for the info. It's been so long since I've last bought the trans fluid that I didn't even realize they had superseded it with the AC Delco. I bought 5qts 2 years ago, and I only change it around 20k-25k miles. So, I still have over 2.5qts left. I was just confused by strange pricing that the dealer gave me.

I'm hoping that the sister dealer to the dealer my sister works at can sell them to her at the usual wholesale cost + 10% that she normally pays.

I'm just glad I don't need BMW MTF-LT3 gear oil like my friends e90 335i. Even with her discount 5 liters is $136, and they only sell it in 5 liter jugs.

I was looking on behalf of my brother-in-law. Who has an 89 K1500 5 speed that I wouldn't be surprised if the trans fluid has never been changed.

The GM synchromesh in ONLY for manual tranny,
Your brother in law has a 5 spd, Automatic, This would not be the thread for you to be looking in.

It's a 5 speed manual, an early version of the NV3500. At least I think that third pedal on the left that you press in to shift gears in an H pattern makes it a manual.

I also found out I can get the AC Delco friction modified for like $10 locally. Apparently, all the local dealers sell parts to each other for wholesale prices.

Anyone have a Canadian source for this product? Local dealers tell me its discontinued in Canada and the shipping from the US is about $40.
