Glove Box Rattle Fix?
Glove Box Rattle Fix?
If there is anyone here who can help me, I would greatly appreciate it. I have the 04 TL and have had a recurrent problem with the glove box that after three attempts at fixing it by the dealership is now actually getting worse. I have an off centre glove box that squeaks as the car goes over bumps. They have taken it apart and put in foam but the problem has recurred. Now to make things worse, there is a loose metal on metal noise as I go over bigger bumps in the road. This metal noise I think is coming from the metal hoop that the latch connects to of the glove box, because it is loose and if you bang the area above the glove box you can mimick the noise.
Does anyone know the TSB for the glove box fix? I recall that there was a TSB for it, my dealership is unaware of any TSB for the glove box and says that the Cdn dealerships do no have access to the US TSB's. If anyone knows the info and could send it to me that would help alot.
I did several searches for this information but came up empty handed. I was wondering if the old posts had been deleted when the website was updated.

Worked for me...
FYI:
I'm the one who started the thread rets referred to above. Haven't been on the forums much so I haven't reported if it worked or not.
Long story short, it worked for. The info michael3314 posted was pretty much dead-on. I had difficulty removing the first two screws on the glove box door since they face backwars (towards the windshield) but it was more awkward than anything else.
Otherwise, follow michael3314's instructions. Saved me a (potentially horrifying) visit to the dealer and it's such a low tech fix there's no reason *not* to try it as a first step before visitng your dealer.

Cold-weather squeak in glovebox going over bumps turned out to be one of the two black plastic locator fins found on the fixed frame rubbing against the inner liner of the glove box door, sort of like the way crickets produce chirps by rubbing their legs against their body.
Anyway, once I found the source of the chirps, putting a piece of friction tape on the left locator plastic fin immediately & completely stopped the chirping.
I did share the diagnosis & fix with an engineer who called from Honda R&D to ask whether the dealer was able to cure my problems after service visit.

Correction: I'm not sure what I was writing above since it's totally not what I meant (musta been tired.) I meant I had difficulty removing the two *hinges*. I found I could not remove them without the help of a flathead screwdriver. Insert the flathead between the plastic hinge and the glove box wall and *slowly* flex the screwdriver outward (towards the door on the right side and the center of the car on the left side.)
Tips:
• A ratcheting screwdriver might help since some places are a bit tight.
• Do *not* over-torque the screws. The threads on the glove box are all plastic and over-torquing will just strip the threads and make it looser.
• After you get the hinges out, the glove box will still not fall down freely. There is a thin plastic catch on the right side of the glove box which keeps it from falling completely. Detach it gently.
• The right side of the glove box catch butts up against a plastic stop. To move the catch towards the back of the glove box, I filed a *small* notch to give it room to move back.
• To re-insert the hinges, you will have to close the glove box about half-way to give the hinge room to clear the front edge of the hinge opening.
Anyway, YMMV. For me, this fixed my glovebox rattling problem. For now, the car is squeak/rattle free (and believe me, I've been taking the bumpy way to work the last couple of days to see if the rattle really is gone.)

Take a look at it from the bottom, this is the one area that designers saved some money. Last years model had a conventional glove-box that sat in the middle of the mount, not this year so it's hard to align and make stable.
I took a video of my glove-box shaking on the way to work last week, no wonder it makes noise! When I get time to edit it for size I'll post it here.
Good luck with yours TorontoTL!
rets,
I'll try and edit it tomorrow night, you'll also hear the rattles pretty well too. Since the video the glove-box has started to droop on the right side, the dealer is more pissed off than I am if you can believe that. Mike has been great so we'll see what he can do soon.

Thanks guys. I am still hoping someone will find the reference to the TSB that decribed something about replacing some clips? My dealership wants to look at it again and will not order me the parts unless I have the TSB first.
TorontoTL,
That's their job, not yours. My dealer called Acura and Acura told them what parts to order. I'm not sure the clips will help though, my mechanic at Acura said they only tighten up the left side of the glove-box leaving the right side to be a bit loose which causes another type of rattle.
What he ended up doing was ordering entirely new mounting hardware and brackets. Sometimes though the cure is worse than the original problem though, good luck.

rets,
The video came in at a whopping 45 megs, I kept it at high quality because when you scale down for size the video loses resolution/clarity to a degree and you can't see the glove-box move around. I'm going to see if I can enhance it and get it down to a downloadable size. Also, unless you have excellent speakers you won't hear the rattles over the road noise.
