Gasoline type

I just got a 2005 TL preowned. This is the first Accura (or a luxury car for that matter) for me. The salesman told me that it was OK to use 87 rating gas, although the manual says 91. Is there going to be a problem if I used 87?
Thanks,

Your salesman is a salesman and like most of them, he doesn't know cars. Use what the owner's manual and the fuel tank door tells you to use. You have a nice car that requires premium fuel. That's what you use.

you should use premium.

there isnt a big price difference

i calulated the price of a full tank (17.1 gal) for Regular and for Premium and the difference was only about $4.

High test only. Don't ask the salesman - ask the service department.

Well from what I gathered after reading several theards on this topic. Getting cheaper gas will work but you will get crapy gas milage. So just pony up and dish out the extra cash for the 91/ premium gas. At the end of the day with premium you will have a smoother running engine, the posted gas milage ( my MID says I get about 25mi to a gal with avg speeds of 35mph ). So its better to fill up with premium.

Oh for God's sake. Someone starts up a new gas thread every 2 weeks, and it's always the exact same question: "87 or 91?". Would you people PLEASE search the forum before starting a gas thread? This topic has been beaten to a bloody pulp.

Mods maybe it's time to pick the most extensively argued gas thread and make it a sticky so people stop this insanity?

That wouldn't help because no one reads the stickies.

Go easy on the noobs. Not everyone knows all about forum etiquette when they first join up, so a gentle hint about searching would be ok, and your post got the point across and wasn't too hostile.

Just be happy we continue to attract new members.

Executive summary from previous threads: You paid for a car that's $30k+ new. If you can't afford the extra 20 cents a gallon for premium then you probably can't afford the TL to start with. You can put 87 in, but your engine power will be reduced. Furthermore you will get worse gas mileage which somewhat cancels out the savings in buying 87.

Salesman was lying to you. He was just saying that to cover the stealership's butt because that free tank of gas you get when you buy the car? That's 87 (you know the stealership isn't going to spring for 91 if it doesn't have to).

I'm rolling here, Desert! You are my hero.

I just posted that guys on an MDX site are arguing the same thing for their $45K+ new cars.

The best comment so far is that making the "if you can't afford Premium, you shouldn't have bought an $XXK car" argument equates to arguing that you should only buy a car if it's loaded. WTF?

Happy Holidays

if the manual says it requires premium, why would you use anything less? they don't put that in there for marketing....if anything its works against the car....so there must be a reason for it.

This goes for guys who mod their cars so much that they have to run racing octane, but still want to run on pump gas. I have lead foot problem. Before I got my Type S, I reg drove my 03 Ford Cobra. I had to run 91+. I have no choice. So I was lucky to get 150 miles out of my gas tank and $50 lighter in the pocket. Unfort, my son loves to drive in it, but the Type S is a very close second with my wife's 06 Pathfinder third.
