gas mileage

There's a break in time until your car normalizes and your mileage is increased.
Also City driving or highway. If mixed, percentages? And seems like you got a Type S, That may decrease it a bit.
But I manage to get 32 on the highway, and City averages around 24-26

im noticing the same. i have 724 miles on the car and have averaged 17-19mpg for the first few fill ups. i hoped that this would increase after the break in period (which i read was 600 miles).
maybe i have to wait for the first oil change?

^ I've been getting 12mpg... because in the winter there is a different mix of gas, and also because I warm my car up for atleast 5mins before driving
also, I did find a jump in mpg average after the first oil change by 2mpg.... which I lost as soon as winter came

We get 17 or 18 MPG at 12,500 miles. BUT we average 19 or 20 MPH and some of that is with a heavy foot and high rpm. I am not surprised nor disappointed.
It all depends on how you drive.
Do tons of highway miles and watch your avg MPG (and avg speed) shoot up.

I hope that 19 mpg isn't highway driving? I can see maybe getting 19mpg in the CITY, but you should be able to get 25+ mpg on the HIGHWAY (65-75 MPH).
Heck, my 08 Type S with 1200 miles on it gets 29-30mpg on the HIGHWAY (65-75MPH) according to MID.
Maybe a trip to the dealer is needed??

According to the EPA, 20 is the official combined average for you car by the way.
I've been keeping a spreadsheet of mileage for my '08 TL (not an S-type), here are just the MPG column:
I'm hoping they'll increase by 10-20 % once it gets warmer here and once they stop using winter gas formulations. The higher ones are highway trips and the lower ones are more mixed driving (about 20/80 city/hwy). It's too bad I can't paste the whole thing, but the formatting gets messed up. I keep track of date, miles driven, gallons, cost/gal, which gas station, outside temp (range like 15-30 °F), CTY/HWY rough %age, and rough average speed on the HWY I've been driving. It sounds more time consuming that it really is actually.
Anyway, what % city would you guess you'd do per tank? Other factors can affect your mileage beyond what others have said about breakin. Winter gas formulations will negatively affect your gas mileage as will low ambient temperatures. Also find out if your gas station is using an E10 blend or pure gasoline (E10 contains 10 % Ethanol). Ethanol will give you inferior mileage. Also, what's your driving style (hard acceleration or easy acceleration)? How many red lights did you hit? Both of these factors have a huge effect on mileage.
I didn't calculate my mileage on my 2008 until after the first 900 miles since I was driving it pretty aggressively on stop-and-go city streets (no highway) during the break-in period. After that, I'm finding that my highway mileage is about 27 when it's over 30 °F. It dropped to 24 for the same highway trip (~250 miles) when the temp was under 10 °F. Again, this is using winter fuel E10 blends (I can't find any stations around here that sell pure fuel anymore).

Here in NYC using this nasty winter gas I've been getting around 23 MPG with mixed driving. You've got to be careful calculating your mileage based on miles driven per tank because there is about 2 gallons left in the tank when your gauge reads empty - which you'll notice that you never put in 17 or even 16 gallons of gas even if your below "E". Most I've ever put in was 14+ gallons, but usually 13+. Out of a "full" tank of gas, with 75/25 split between highway/city, I usually get about 340-350 miles. The worst I've gotten from a full tank is 280 miles. BTW - I've got 28K on my 06 3.2 TL. When summer gas comes in (at stinkin' $4/gallon! if predictions are right), I'll do a little better.

Fill up the tank, reset the odometer and drive the car. Now, when the tank is low or empty, whatever, you simply take the miles driven since your last fill-up (from the odometer) and divide by the number of gallons you put into the tank (irrespective of total tank capacity).

Man, do you guys drive slow? I get 234miles with a full tank. In the city, I usually get an avg of 14mpg, combine total with highway is 19mpg. Every week its more like 160 miles on freeway, and like 50 or less in city. I have a 07 TL-S with about 14k miles.

i just finished installing my CAI this past week and before I was averaging between 270-300 miles per tank (that includes going WOT) and I filled her up today at 335 miles (also going WOT several times)...I know CAI is supposed to help w/ better mileage but I wasn't expecting this awesome amount

when i take long trips from northeast to southeast (I95) I get 32mpg in cruise control at 80mph i have the thermo spacers n cai and I dont really abuse the car to begin with. i dont know if u can factor that in. and I have 80094 miles on it.

but i pretty much get like 18-19mpg and it sucks, i feel like everytime i start the car my gas tank goes down...
this is my second 3g tl, my first was an 07 tl 6mt w/ nav. and that got around 24mpg...
my new tl is an automatic and is type-s so maybe thats why i get less idk...

@frankiedix22 - your problem is that you're driving 80-90 mph in my opinion. I'll bet you $20 your mileage will improve is you set your cruise to 70 MPH on the freeway. Just for the fuck of it, fill up the tank and try it for a week (at least 300 miles) and report back.

Don't you guys all hate it after you fill it up and drive the car for like 20 miles, then the needle will get away from the Full position? My 00 TL can drive for like 50 some miles and it's still showing Full ...

I have had my 2007 TL Type S for one year and have 15,000 miles. I drive about 50% highway, usually at 75-85 MPH, and about 50% city. I consistantly get 21-22 MPG. This is the same milage I formerly got on my 2001 CL Type S for the same type of driving.

I normally get my gas at Costco 'cuz it's close to where I live & work ... but today I was running some errands and had to get gas at a Shell ... got the 91 & to my surprise, the MPG has gone up to 25 so far .... I'm thinking about switching to Shell to try it out for a while ...
Any other drivers out there notice these kind of improvement in terms of MPG reading?

I just took a highway trip in my '07 Base TL (AT) with the following results:
Interstate at 75-80mhp = 29mpg
Combination Interstate and U.S. Highway mountain roads 26.5mpg
My average city mpg is 18-19mpg
All of this is calculated based on miles driven/gallons to Full. The trip computer on the highway mpg was about 2mpg higher. (31mpg vs 29mpg actual)

I average 26 on the highway (80-90mph) and if I'm on a road that I have to go 60 I can easily pull down 32mpg. In general with my mix of driving I probably average 24-25 mph per tank. I can't believe some of you are average less than 20 with the majority on highways....something must be wrong.

All I have to say is I drive my 1994 Chevy Coprice 9C1 (retired police car) back and forth to work. It has 168K on the clock, its a 5.7 liter (350cu) engine, cop motor, cop shocks, etc etc. AND it gets better milage than my damn 07 TL.
The TL gets about 21-23 mpg
Coprice gets 25-28 mpg. Why does a older, heavy car with a bigger motor, heavy weight, HIGH milage, get better mpg than a brand spanking new (well its got 7k on it) 07 TL with a smaller motor and less weight?
Makes no sense, and with gas hitting 4 bux a gallon you can bet the TL will stay at the nest, except maybe on Sundays.
WTF!

I just looked up a 1994 Caprice w/ the 5.7 L on fueleconomy.gov... they advertise 18/26 (19 combined) but using the new estimates that drops to 16/24 )21 combined). You must be driving the hell out of your '07 TL and babying your old Caprice or something!

Heres a side by side comparison, http://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/2008c...umn=2&id=23553. It does not show how many miles my Capice gets on a full tank, but I can tell you I get over 400 on a full tank of gas, in the summer with A/C use and stuff it drops to the mid 300's. That's not babying it, thats driving the speed limit. A hard thing to do in it. If I drive 80mph to work/home I see about 320 a tank. But none the less, according to the website, the car gets only 2 miles less combined than the TL.
Maybe the 7K I put on the TL has not 'broken' it in yet. Most of my commute is highway, I would say about 89% of it. Now the Caprice is horrible for rush hour, stop and go stuff. The TL is a little better, but not what I expected. Then again, it does have a V6, not a 4-banger.
