gas mileage

@TLingham - thanks
@ncinirator - are you also compared apples-to-apples with ambient temp (which does play a role in mileage) and fuel mix (i.e. same grade fuel purchased from the same gas station at the same time of year)? Remember that 'winter blends' hurt gas mileage as well.

First 3 fill-ups I'm averaging about 24-25. I bet I drive about 80% highway at about 80 and 20% city. I'm perfectly happy with those numbers, considering in my TSX I was only averaging about 27.

Take the TL out on the highway many members have reported 30MPG + with their cars. I Have seen 32-33ish on my 2000 with over 90k so good mileage can happen.

I get about 220 miles per full tank. I'm afraid to look at my mpg. I drive 20 miles (each way) to West Los Angeles. 3 hrs per day. In the 3 hours each day, my foot is on the brakes 90-95% of the time. I actually grind my brakes 3 hrs each day. Acceleration, whats that?
My acceleration footrest is so clean and new, its not even funny. 6K on my TL-S so far, 5500 of the miles are on brakes.

I agree with NDe 100%. A lot of people say oh they drive 80% highway and 20% city or what ever it might be. That doesnt actually mean the highway driving is at a constant speed. Factoring in traffic imo plays a big roll in determining what the average mpg is.
If you drive 75mph for a long period of time yes you will get great mileage. If you are stop and go on the freeway then forget about it mpg will go way down. I've been trying to figure this out for so long why i do not get great mileage and the only thing that comes to mind is how much stop and go traffic you may possibly run into.
A good reference to see how good of gas mileage you get is how much you get per full tank. NDe says about 220 per tank in heavy traffic. Me about 300 or so in moderate traffic. 2007 TL-S.

frankie, you know it's a six-speed right? After 5th, you can shift one more time..
Seriously though, I left the dealership with 3 miles on my new tl-s 6mt, and averaged 29 mpg on the 540 mile trip home.. Then engine shouldn't need to break-in to start making power.

I think the general TL consensus on gas mpg is . Dont get me wrong, I like the car but you can have the stealership & the MPG.

New 06 TL owner here. I have a question for you guys (and gals). Would it be better to buy the lowest grade of gas (87 octane) and put an octane booster in? Or, is it better to just buy Premium (93) and not worry about it? It seems like the 87+octane booster would be cheaper (even only by a buck or two per fillup)... Thoughts?

I don't make a lot of money. Working full time and a student part time = poor. For 15 cent more per gallon, I say screw it, I can squeeze $2 more per week for my baby. 91 Premium all the way. 91 is the max I can get in So. CA.
Some say 87 is the same as 91, depends on who you ask. I really love my car, and I try to get the best for it. Even if 87 and 91 are the same, I psychologically feels better with 91.
I have never tried booster since my daily average speed is 10mph. Faster with my bicycle most time.

Burning Brakes
Some say that mileage improves after pilling up some miles on a car, but the difference is so small that most will probably not notice the difference – at least not on TL My TL broke 20k last week and my mileage is still about the same as day one. I drive most on open highway which would account for about 70% and the rest normal road – sometimes with some heavy traffic. My usual combined mileage is about 23 mpg on warmer weeks and as low as 20 on freezing cold weeks. (I fill up about once a week). I have seen some weeks in summer as high as 24-25 but that was mostly just highway driving and no city driving. I also seen 17-18 mpg when I did mostly city driving.
It has been already accepted and confirmed that TL has horrible mileage in city – 20mpg or less to as low as 16 mpg in heavy traffic and some excellent highway mileage 30+ without any stops.

That could play a big factor... who knows.
Btw, I average 220 miles per tank.
