To former 2G owners

Serious question. Do you notice the reduced trunk space in the 3G? We take weekend trips to Lake of the Ozarks. We pack the trunk with beer, luggage and coolers. Often, it's packed pretty tight. We also have a 1+ yr old son. Traveling with him (not to the lake with beer and coolers) also loads the trunk up pretty good. I've looked at the 3G trunk in the dealer, but it's hard to say for example if it is laid out to be more usable than the 2G even though it is smaller. I'm not sure they'd appreciate me bringing in luggage, a big Igloo cooler and beer into a dealership to pack the trunk.

Dont' say put the beer in the cooler. That includes beer in and out of the cooler.

Comments appreciated. It is one of my sticking points on the new TL.

Oh man thats a lot of beer. Share the love.

Anyway, the trunk space seems pretty nice in the car. I'm pretty sure it could fit a cooler or two and some cases of beer. Can't compare it to the 2G though because I didn't have one.

Try edmunds or something for trunk space measurements.

Ha, GaleForce, you're always one step ahead of me.

2G: 14.3 cu ft

3G: 12.3 cu ft (Navi) & 12.5 cu ft (non-Navi)

I owned both 2G and 3G TLs. I miss the 2 cu ft of trunk space of the 3G, but that loss is mitigated by having a shorter car with better handling. Shouldn't be a show-stopper for you. I can get an Igloo into the trunk.

Don't Worry!

I had the same concern when I moved from my 2001 to my 2004. When we travel to Florida, we pack a lot of stuff to last us the winter. So much stuff that we could barely close the trunk lid. This year we took the same stuff but in the 2004 TL. We actually had more space left over than before. The trunk space is much higher and that helps getting more stuff in the trunk.

The smaller trunk capacity doesn't bother me so much as the smaller opening does. While I understand that the smaller trunklid is a necessity given the car's rear styling, I've found that I am unable to fit certain items into the opening that would otherwise fit quite easily once inside the trunk. The 2G's trunk spoiled me.

Thanks for the comments. I'll take more if anyone is willing to give them. I'm not sure it's a show stopper, but unfortunately I have to be somewhat practical also. Wish they could have kept it the same size

I jammed it full of crap on my last trip to orlando, my Igloo electric cooler, 3 bags, 2 boots, and a JVC KaBOOM box (large tube shaped kicker) and it all fit in the back. Of course I loaded the rear seat up too (yes I have a packing dysfunction).

I had a 2000 TL but honestly cant remember loading it up that well, but the G3 is very usable. I wouldn't sweat it.

And I like that they covered the hinges so that you can jam whatever you want in and don't worry about it getting crushed when you close the trunk. WOO HOO.

Good point on the hinges. I need to look at both vehicles again. Depending on how the hinges go, that alone could make more of the new TL's space more usable for hard sided objects.
