Flooring it?

Does flooring it harm your car in any way? Cause in my old 2003 Acura TL the pedal vibrated and didn't feel clean when I did it, but all my friends floor there cars all the time and think nothing about it. And I am buying a 2005 Black Acura TL and was wondering what flooring it or 'gunning' it does to the car besides give you a sense of adrenaline and rush!!

I love that rush too...the rush of taking off and knowing that if i hit a big bump i will loose control and hit a tree. FWD torque steer FTMFW!!!!!!

This is a silly post. In no way is this a Ferrari, so no, flooring it isnt a great idea for everyday use. Yes when its time to pass, or from time to time off the line it is fun...but you put so much stress on so many parts that for me its just not worth it to do all that often.

Yes this car is build to take a little more abuse, sorta, but its still a sedan that is more luxury than sport. Enjoy it for what it is, and save the "gunning" for a souped up Civic.

You're fine. All it'll do is put more wear & tear on your car. You won't "harm" it, per say.

As long as you don't do it all the time you should be fine.

It's a Honda, they're bullet proof right? At least that's how I treat my Honda's(Cars and motorcycles). But if you really want a rush, it wont come from a car, even less from a TL.

Technically yes, flooring any car is not good for the engine and drive train. It accelerates wear and there is always the risk of sudden and catastrophic damage. But then, there is reality and in reality, you would have to do this many, many times over a period of time to begin to experience observed degradation in your car's engine and drive train.

So getting on it from time to time is not likely to cause any concerns during the life of the time you are going to own the car. Of course, there are a plethora of ways in which one can "get on it", so that can weigh heavily in the picture. Use common sense and enjoy your car.

I am sure there are car out there that can be "floored" and will have minimum harm. Like the Bugatti Veyron, I'm sure that badass can take a beating.

But the TL, NO. "Gunning it" is so lame anyway, especially since it's FWD.

Its funny that this thread came to my attention today. Yesterday i was sitting at a traffic light near my house and this Acura Integra pulled up next to me and started reving me. So i figured when the light turns green he was going to try and race. so I reved back before the light changed and when the light turned green I just eased of the line like a normal driver. Mean while the integra spun the tires and then the loudest bang I have ever heard. it was so loud i felt it. I thought for sure he had torque steered into me, but no he had blown the car up. there it was sitting in the left lane smoking. To add insult to injury the car behind the integra was an unmarked state trooper. So he gets a wreckless driving ticket and blows up his car. Being a nice guy I of course pulled over and helped the kid out. talked to the cop and had a good laugh over this one. Now I know acura makes a quality product. but even quality wears out. Moral of the story even the best kept cars can have costly failure. So i would say if every now and then you want to floor it for passing or merging onto the highway its ok but dont do it at a light and just appreciate that you can afford a luxury car that has a little balls to it..

Your all set whale that thing.
Only bad will be wearing and breaking things faster.
If you are like the rest of us,The faster something gets broke, the faster you mod the car.
As long as you don't cry about it when something breaks and you have the money to take care of any issues then.
Give it what it can take.

I don't recommend beating a only car DD.
Might find yourself walking

Why not? Honda makes some of the most robust, reliable and durable gasoline engines on the planet. Planting the accelerator from time-to-time won't kill 'em.

I floor my 2000 Accord stick shift and had +170,000 miles and never had any issue. I drive even worse with the 05 TL and no issues. Honda engine can take the abuse very well. Just change the fuilds and have fun.

I wonder this also... I enjoy my car and the power it has. I have floored the piss out of all my cars, but not all the time.

I read an article in Road and Track once about how little time engines actually spend at (or near) redline. 98% of the time, I am cruising, revving ~ 2K rpm. If I floor it once or twice a day and romp to redline through 1st and 2nd, it is still revving up there for a matter of seconds.

My question is what kind of damage does this do?

Either way, this is why Mobil 1 is Key... LOL!!

As long as you don't floor it often it is fine. I def do not recommend flooring it at stand still and that's on any car. Too much wear and tear to motor mounts, tranny, axle, and other moving components. You are safe to floor it while the vehicle is moving. Using good quality motor oil, toptier fuel, and changing tranny fluid often like 10k to 20k, and 30k for tranny filter will keep the car lasting for 200k +

If you floor it, it's going to wear at a faster rate but you're not going to hurt it.

Another factor is how long it's floored for. There's a difference in flooring it from a redlight for the first two gears and doing a track day or a top end run. Longer runs do put more thermal stress on parts and especially on the oil.

Doesn't flooring the car help it once in awhile?

Just like anything else in life, don't do something so much, and don't do anything so little.
