First road trip - 31 mpg

Did about a thousand mile round-trip to Indy over the weekend - 31 mpg highway.

First car I've owned that ever exceeded the EPA mileage estimate.

And I assume it'll get better after the "real" breakin? (Had just over 1K miles on the clock when we left Saturday morning.)

yup, i consistently get 32+ when i do 80% or more freeway/highway driving (at about 75-80 mph). EPA still tests cars at 55 mph~ for highway... i guess the TL's eat up less gas at higher speeds.. not the safest way to save gas, but whatever.

i doubt your mpg will get any better though.

Yea, I have gotten up to 40MPG doing 50-55 in 6th gear too. I love doing that. I now get about 26 - 27MPG doing a combination of highway/city to work and back.

40 MPG? Whoa, that's really good. The best I've gotten was 34 MPG and that was in 6th gear at around 60 MPH. Guess I gotta drive slower if I want to get those results. My MID is saying I have about 468 miles to empty. How are you guys doing with your tanks? > 468 miles to empty?

I make several trips to Houston and back to Dallas. My average speed on those trips is about 65 MPH. Average MPG is always around 32-33 mpg. In "normal" city driving for me, I get 23 mpg. I have around 32,000 miles on an '04 TL.

I've got about 9,500 miles on my 04TL and get 32-34 on the highway (top out at 72 mph) and about 23-24 in the city. This has been consistent since I picked up the car last year.

Are you guys testing the MPG manually (dividing the miles between fill ups by amoutn of gas it takes to fill up), or using the trip computer?

The trip computer is amazingly accurate. I have checked it several times and it is always correct. The only problem might be is that it rounds off the readings, since there are only 2 digits available. This means that 23.6 to 24.4 would give you a 24MPG reading.

In fact, it may be more accurate than manually computing the MPG, because then it is dependent on how full you got the tank the last time you filled up and how full you get the tank when you fill it again. This variation could cause an erroneous reading.

You guys are getting excellent mileage. I usually get about 22 MPG with combined city/highway(though with lots of traffic) driving. Did about 900 miles this past weekend and got about 27 MPG with a 75 MPH average speed. There were some pretty hilly areas and I did some passing, so that probably didn't help.

I agree with Ron A, the trip computer is very accurate. On a recent trip the computer showed 32 mpg. Using paper and pencil to check at the next fill up the average was 31.9. Can't get much closer than that. Driving around town I get between 22 and 23 as shown by the trip computer.
