First oil change - when?

I know the manual recommend changing the oil for the first time only when the trip computer indicates it.

Is it true they have some sort of special oil in there right now? Isn't the rationale of changing the oil earlier (like around 1000K) to wash out whatever junk may have been in the engine and replace with fresh oil?

I am at a little over 1000miles right now and debating what to do.

People are saying that you should keep that special oil in there until your oil minder tells you otherwise. There was someone who changed his oil out at 1500 miles and everyone was shocked that the dealer even did that.

Re: First oil change - when?

The new engine is more efficient, and technology is making oil better. Most of engine should easily keep their oil clean and ok. Our owner manual does say our first engine oil has some additive. But who know what it is?

It's your own choice to decide if you'd like to make oil change sooner than what your MID says.

Some ppl have done this at 2k or 3k for 04TL 'cause they like it or dealers encourage doing so. I did mine with 5% left at 5700 miles and followed the schedule of MID.

Besides oil/filter change, the reminder system will be never accurate anymore if you don't want to follow your TL's MID...

Of course, you can do whatever you want... no doubt about it...

There are so many different views on this. 1k 3,750, 7,500. I've heard good arguements for all. In my case, I have the first oil change (which I just did yesterday) done at 3,500-4,000. Or the 3,750 mark.

As far as special oil. I have never read or heard a complete definitive answer on it. I work in the suto industry, for one of the OEMs. And no one has been able to tell me if the "special oil" from the factory thing is true, or not for that matter.

Just curious... I have 5800 miles on mine, and the display only says '<15%'

did yours say 5% at 5700miles?

Im waiting until the computer tells me to change... I think the general consensus in past threads has been to do the first oil change when the computer tells you...

I plan to do my oil changes every 3k after my first one.

oil

Yes the oil is special.

It's been tested & proven to be different.

It has a lot more of an ingredient called "moly".

very good for breaking in a new engine.

www.bobistheoilguy.com >>forums

leave it in till it tells you to change it.

will it hurt if you don't....probably not.

I believe Seattle has better roads than NYC. My TL got less mileage while hitting the mark. (My friend in LA got 7800 while following reminder to do the oil/filter change.) Your <15% is SERVICE DUE message, later you will have SERVICE NOW, which owner manual indicates 5%... I have oil/filter change after seeing that SERVICE NOW message... BTW, I got the bed experience in the dealer, please make sure what kind of service your dealer is going to provide to you before they do. Otherwise, DIY or any other oil stores could do this for you as long as you have good filter to put on.

Also, I'm thinking the same thing. 3-5k to have the oil/filter/washer change from now on 'cause this is the only reminder I can reset myself.

TO ranberndt, thank you, very useful website.
