First Oil Change

My oil life hit <15% last night so I stopped on the way home at the local Express Lube (Used to be Auto Spa). I've been going there for years, but now that they changed ownership the whole place is redone and a lot cleaner.

Oil & Filter with Mobil-1 5-20 was only $60. They also filled the washer fluid and vacuumed the car. I was in and out in 15 mins and I watched them all the time so I know I actually got the Mobil-1 oil.

Just thought you guys might be interested since there are a lot of threads on how much service should cost. I am not going back to the dealer to pay a ton of money for them to "check my fluids"

Just my

Wink Trust no one.

If I got free oil changes from the dealer, I still wouldn't take my TL back there.

They replaced my center arm rest because it shape-shifted on me. I watched the mechanic like a hawk. In Florida, the service areas are often open-air so you can watch without actually going into the garage. Still, I had greasy fingerprints on my door and roof.

Of course, I had to write in BIG RED LETTERS on the Repair Order "DO NOT WASH". No one washes my car but me. (Yes, I'm one of those anal nut-cases.)

I do my own maintenance. I use premium synthetic oil, usually Mobil 1 but, right now, I have German Castrol Syntec. I either use Mobil 1 or Purolator Pure One filters. Both are excellent.

Different strokes for different folks. The most important thing is to change the oil and filter at least as often as the MID says. Many of us probably waste money and oil by doing it more often. Just use the correct grade and a quality brand.

My mileage is so low that I end up changing my oil on my mother's birthday every January 14th. It has about 2500 miles on it (the oil).

Check your owner manual- service schedule
Usually the first service at the dealer includes visual and manual inspection of
things like lug nut torque, nothing leaking or out of place under the car etc.
Now I cant say they really do any of that,- so its a good idea to do yourself if jiffy is working on your car

$60 is far from a bargain. My Acura dealer charges $29.95.

Well just hit 3354 and ding... <15%... time for first oil change... gonna pick up some synthetic... and do it myself... costs the oil which is enough for over 3 oil chances and I will probably pick up 3 or 4 filters just to not have to go back... my total is under $60... and that is enough for atleast 3 oil changes

At least in central Ohio, Walmart has Mobil 1 for $19.98 for 5 gallon jug.
(Not the extended formula, though)

$29.95 would not include synthetic oil and premium filter at any shop....

- Considering they get their oil in bulk, $60 isn't bad w/synthetic yet still too high in my book.

I'm financially comfortable yet still wont throw money away. $30 gets you five quarts of either Mobil-1 or other synthetic at Wally-world, and an M1 filter. 15 min of my time in the driveway gets it changed without any hazards to my car and or time/money lost of mine by driving to a dealer etc.. I then take the used oil to AutoZone and pick up another M1 filter for the next change.

I just hit the magic <15% this weekend myself.

I went and bought my own Mobil1 and a K&N oil filter, and called the dealer what it would cost for them to do the change. They'll charge me 10 bucks to install MY oil and filter. So still cheaper than the local oil change places, and they'll update my service records for warantee purposes as having had it done (AND they will replace the Crush Washer on the oil drain-plug (per owner's manual) which is something the corner oil-change guy won't do). Not quite as cheap as DIY, but not a bad deal. Also, they'll rotate the tires for another 10 bucks. So all in all not a ripoff, and I get to watch them do it without breaking a sweat.

My dealer (Jackson Acura) charges me $15 when I bring my own oil and filter. I beleive if they supply the synthetic the change is like between $49.99 or $59.99.
