Extended warranty and maintenance
Extended warranty and maintenance
Hi folks
I just bought a used 2008 TL type S(29K miles) certified in CA and dealer sold me 7yr/100000 extendede warranty for $1016 from Honda Care and 3yr 7,500 miles maintenance for $684 from Zurich with 0 deductible.
Am i getting ripped off especially on the maintenance thing? I think extended warranty seems like a decent deal. I think I have 60 days to cancel both maintenance and extended warranty contracts and get the full refund.
Any thoughts will be appreciated

I paid 21xx.xx for my extended plan when I refinanced when i had 52K on mine.
Better get it now if your thinking about it because the more miles you put on it the more $$ its gonna cost you later

Just be certain you know that the Car Care warranty is not bumper to bumper. There are quite a few items that aren't covered, but I purchased the warranty just for peace of mind but haven't used it. Is the maintenance warranty for an additional 3 years at 7500 mile intervals, I would say that's high, especially if you do the work yourself. In that 3 years will you eclipse the 105,000 mile mark? If so, will it cover the 105,000 timing belt change, probably not, but check, as that service is @ $1000. I see they state that it covers basic service which would negate the timing belt.

read the fine print- Im guessing maitenance is oil change only-as thats all the book calls for for a long time
maybe other fluids at 60kmiles, but chances are its a major ripoff and profit center for them- you pay the price of 10-15 oil changes now and we will give them to you over 3 years- (when most people get 2 a year)
if you can even use them all within the limits given- say min 5000 miles between change or mid at 10 % before `free` oil change
Geez why not loan the govt your money for free too!!
CPO 7 year is good to have- many things that may fail are covered- a few are not but thats life
Are you going to own the car for the next 5-10 years? or 3-4

ext. warranty is a good thing to have for peace of mind, but its debatable whether its really necessary. Since you've gotten it already, I would say keep it. The maintenance thing is a bunch of bologna ... get rid of it, they are ripping you off like crazy with that price. Do the services yourself with the DIY's on this site and save yourself some money for MODS!
I think the extended warranty has exactly the same coverage as the manufacturer warranty.
Also I checked the maintenance contract, it says that it will pay for total 12 services in next 3 years, 6 of which will include
engine oil
engine oil filter
chassis lubrication
all fluids
inspection
and 6 tire rotations

Factory coverage:
Basic 4/50,000
Powertrain 6/70,000
Roadside 4/50,000
Buying a CPO will add 12months/12,000 miles to the above and carries the powertrain for 7 years/100,000 miles from date of in service. Buying the extended warranty will cover everything, at least what is in the contract, to the 7 year/100,000 mile mark.
To me the powertrain would be the least of my worries as they are pretty stout, but on the electronics side, big bucks when/if something goes awry.

so they do 6 tire rotations --free at many tire stores or cheap, I dont rotate and only buy 2 tires at a time- rears outlast fronts just like brakes do
and 6 oil changes- $25-50 diy or shop
there are no zerk/lube fittings on the chasis like old cars, so at best- they may shoot wd40 in the door locks-
Inspect all fluids- you can do that at home by pulling the dipsticks for trans (auto trans) and oil and looking at the full line for ps, coolant bottle, brake fluid--If any are suddenly low there is a real problem
that was easy!

You'll find that is not correct.

I will probably go to the dealer next week and show the maintenance contract to the service department and ask what is exactly covered cause its quite confusing. When the dealership finance lady sold me the maintenance she told me that all the maintenance including the major services will be covered though I cannot find that anywhere in the contract
thats a huge commission sale, strange that finance was the one to offer it,
not surprising they didnt know the real specs of it-- and most customers wont catch it till its too late...as in when they need something and not covered
what part of it is confusing? it should specify what parts and labor are covered
remember there are no `major services` required until 105kmiles
just inspect inspect inspect- change oils-
but wear out parts- like brakes, not covered

The thing that keeps me from buying it is that Acuras are built well and nothings really going to go wrong until AFTER the 100k mark anyway...as long as you keep up with maintenance. I had it on my previous two TLs now I'm having 2nd thoughts on purchasing it for this one since this is the one I got with the least amount of miles (4k) at time of purchase.
Dunno, Izzy. There are plenty of threads in this forum about TL's having issues, from the power mirror actuators stripping all the way up to the dash cracking (megabucks to have that replaced), before 100,000 miles. Don't get me wrong, I love my TL, and I'll put it up against most cars around its price range as far as comfort *and* reliability, but I have no illusion that it's going to be nearly as reliable as the '91 CRX I have next to it, with 300,000 miles and no major (or even moderate) repairs yet.
If nothing else, I know from building computers that they start to degrade over time, and the TL has a boatload of computerized stuff in it. If the nav system still works when the car's 19 years old I'll be shocked.

I would keep the extended warranty. You got a decent price
7yr/100k extended warranty good idea
I got the 7yr/100k extended warranty for $995 when I purchased my '04 TL in 2007. Since then, I've had the following items covered under this warranty at NO COST to me:
(1) Dashboard instrumentation (Speedo, Tach, Temp/fuel gauges, etc). The temp gauge illuminated on/off at times and this required the entire cluster to be replaced. Cost of new assembly: ~$900.
(2) Master cylinder replacement. I was one of the unfortunate to have my VSA, yellow "!" light and Brake warning lights go off at the same time. This is a trend with the 3rd gen TL at higher mileage. The dealership found it to be a faulty sensor in my master cylinder, but had no replacement and had to replace the entire master cylinder assembly. Cost: ~$200-300.
In my case, having the warranty worked out. Hopefully, nothing else this ridiculous goes bad when the warranty expires (*knock on wood*).
