Emergency/Parking break issue
Emergency/Parking break issue
Is it me or have you all noticed that the emergency/parking break doesn't seem to work like it does on other Hondas. I have owned a Civic and an Accord and whenever I park especially on a driveway, both cars would stay put after setting the emergency/parking break. However, with the TL there is always a little roll after setting thre emergency/parking break.
try this:
when you roll to a stop, keep your foot on the brake pedal, engage park, release the brake pedal and pull the parking brake. i think that "roll" is simply the gap between gears in the transmission when it stops (i.e. P is engaged).
ive done that on every AT car i drive, be it mine or my friends' cars. never had that roll happen more than once.

the reason im thinking/guessing its the "gap" in the gear (either transmission gear or parking brake gear) is because even with a stick (for example before on my Evo MR), when i stop and turn off the engine while in gear, pull the handbrake and then release the brake pedal, i also have that "roll". so what i learned to do is stop the car, release the brake pedal, pull the parking brake and put the car in neutral. when i shut off the Evo then it stopped "rolling".
i did find it strange but i guess the parking brake isnt as strong as the hydraulic brake that stops the car. so when you stop and put the car in park while you are stepping on the brake pedal, and pull the handbrake, the car will roll when you release the brake pedal and stop when it either engages the transmission gear or the parking brake gear.
i dont really know for sure but thats been my best guess.
Its due to the fact that the rotor/drum still turns a bit even after the shoes lock to the inside of the drum when the parking brake is set. They aren't actually using the pads to lock the rotor in place like on most other older cars...
I find that on a hill, even a gradual one, I have to set the handbrake, then pull it up again, or else the car rolls. When I park the TL I shft to neutral, set the handbrake, then shift to first (or reverse if I'm facing downhill) and then pull up the handbrake again. It always goes up at least one more click when I do that. I always set the brake before shifting back into gear because I read somewhere that it puts less strain on the transmission.
Previous Hondas and Acuras that I owned did not require the extra tug on the handbrake.
I've never owned an AT car and so have no idea if I'd do anything differently there.

I owned an MT before the TL and it was a Scion TC and whenever I park I keep my foot on the break and set the car to neutral and then set the parking break and then let go of the break and the car stayed put without a roll. It just feels like to me that an expansive car shouldn't have such annoyances.
