E-ZPass Transponder Location

I haven't so far attached my E-ZPass transponder to my windshield, but hold it against the windshield as I go thru toll gate reader. I've been warned by E-ZPass that this is illegal and will result in ticketing in the future (plus it's a bit inconvenient).

Yesterday on a PA Turnpike trip I held the transponder behind the black painted-on shaded area on the top center of the windshield behind the rear-view mirror. It was read OK my 4 times thru toll gates.

Have others mounted their transponders in this 'shaded' area of the windshield? Is the signal picked up OK?

I think it would be distracting to me, and look crappy from the outside if I mounted it below this shaded area of the windshield, under the rear view mirror.

Mine is mounted to the right of the rear view, about 80% into the shaded area...it's actually positioned so it's mostly out of my view of the driver so the rear view blocks it. Also, I spray painted mine black. Never had an issue w it not getting picked up.

I spray painted my E-Z Pass black on the side that faces out. You can't even tell it's there.

Like Geoffs, I also have mine about 80% into the black shaded area on the right side of the rear view mirror. I didn't paint mine black but don't get distracted by the pass. I don't even notice it and have had no problems with any transmissions for the past year.

I have mine over there, too. It was read perfectly for 16 months already.

If you wanna know more, there are a few threads in 3G Garage.

I placed mine directly behind the rearview, so no obstruction of my view .. it has always been picked up with no probs!

They made a new kind of EZ Tag here in Texas. This one you mount on the front license plate. I hope I can change it to the traditional windshield mounted ones.

I too have mine directly behind the rear view mirror so it doesn't obstruct my view.

Not sure when E-ZPass started. But, E-ZPass seemed to begin its era in 1994 or 1995 in New York City area, I got it two years later. A cop handed over the application form to me while sitting on a long queue to pass through the toll booth. At that time, New York has offered two options, the windshield tag and the front license tag. IMO, the exterior license tag is very useful for trucks or those official business vehicles. For me, I don't want anyone to remove/steal that from my car.

I've had EZP since it first started in Pa. I have it on the pass. side, about one inch into the black. You won't even notice it. I don't even notice it from the outside. It's become one of those things now that look natural on the car. Make sure you put it on. The TP commision takes pictures of the cars going thru and can see everything. I had a loner and forgot about not having the transponder. They tracked me down and wanted me to pay a fine. I fought it and won.

I've been using an EZ pass for about 3 years and I've never mounted it to my car, i just grab it out of my glove compartment when im coming up to a toll, and drop it onto the front dash. Any pictures taken (which I never worried about in the past) would never be a problem.

I doubt this would happen. IMHO, we ain't sure if this electronic toll collection system sending out a radio-frequency (microwave) pulse would stay that long before car manufacturers/traffic management experts come out with another new technology. Also, not all drivers are using this Speed Pass thing yet...

Eventually they will probably use a GPS locator, but that stirs up controversy. I guess I'd mount it out of my line of site and out of view from outside

Thanks, Guys

Many thanks for all of the replies. I will confidently mount mine to the right of the mirror, in the shaded area.

I like the idea of painting it black, however we were recently sent two replacement transponsders, as the batteries in two of our several year old transponsders were causing them not to be picked up on occasion (as an aside, coming home from college at Christmas my daughter was charged $5--"no entry point"--for her $18 trip across the state because her transponsder wasn't picked up at the western end of the PA Turnpike), and the letter stated that if the transponders we returned were in any way "defaced" we would be charged $25 each.

However in the long run, could be worth the $25 charge.

Thanks again for all the helpful posts.
