DVD video can be played accordin to ELS

http://www.elssurround.com/faq.asp
go down to where it says
Can I play DVD movies on a DVD-Audio player?
Yes. Most DVD-Audio players will play all DVD-Video titles Models with this ability will carry the DVD-Video or the DVD-Audio/Video logo.

That's pretty funny! I think the players that play DVD movies and DVD-A discs are commercially known on the market as "DVD players".

The ELS system in the TL is a pretty special case, since it's an automotive application. I haven't seen a DVD-Audio player for the home that isn't also capable of playing DVD-Video.

I figured the best way to test this was to insert a DVD movie disc and see what happened. It accepted the disc, then "Format" came on the screen, then a few seconds later "eject" came on the screen, and the disc ejected. I guess this means I cannot play DVD movie discs, or am I doing something wrong?

That means you can't play the movie disc. If there were DVD-Audio content (i.e., a properly authored AUDIO_TS directory) on the disc, it would have played.

I was told all current DVD-A discs have 2 formats for same content on the same disk, one for DVD-A & 1 for DVD video, since there's more than enough room on DVD disk for audio in most cases; while DVD movies don't. This explains why DVD-A disks can play in DVD movie players & Computer DVD-ROM drives (with DVD movie player software, such as winDVD), while not the other way. This is why a couple of audio tracks (short voice intro's) on our Acura DVD-A demo disk are not available when this disk is played in DVD movie player/DVD-Rom drive.

Now, wait till the next gen DVD's come out (HD-DVD & Blu-ray) next year!

You've got it right Danno. The proliferation of competing DVD technologies is very confusing, and there's no real attempt to make it less so for consumers. SACD is just as bad; you really have to look at the fine print to know what you are getting; Hybrid? SACD only? Stereo? Surround? Both?

CDs you could pick up, look at the artist, album, and song list and know exactly what you were getting.

Dolby Pro Logic? Dolby Digital? DTS? Dolby Digital Pro? DTS-ES? THX? Most people have no idea what the technologies behind these acronyms are.

Throw DRM into the equation (for instance, my DVD-A player for home can only play DVD-A and SACD through its own internal decoder, requiring a different input on the receiver), and it only gets more confusing. The end result is you have to practically be an engineer to run your stereo, er, home theater entertainment system these days.

The HD-DVDs will only add to the confusion.

All that said, I love my TL's DVD-A capabilities, but few people are willing to make the investment of time and research to get a useful understanding of what all of the different technologies really are.

I think the reason Acura did not want to put DVD Video available...could be the number of lawsuits they would get for having a video device in the front, etc etc... just wish there was a way around it all.

Is there any DVD changer that can be added that will play DVD concert videos in 5.1? I don't care about playing video.
