Cool DVD Navi Movies

My long wait for the new TL is finally over. I've pretty much made up my mind as to what I want. (It was this or a G35 Coupe) Just want to check out and get more info on the A-Spec.

With that said, I've been reading a lot of info everywhere and one of the things I read about is that the DVD Navi will let you play a movie ONLY in park. Is this info even true? If so, does anybody know of or know if a mod is being worked on to let us use the DVD Navi to play movies while not in park?! If so, that would be sooooo sweeet!

misinformation, U can not play a DVD ever. U can buy a system for $600 where u can attatch a DVD palyer or whatever to play on nav, use PS2, paly mp3s..... even has hookup for a camera that activates when the car is in reverse. Gotta install the system though (no wire splicing, hooks right up through harnesses)

Not pertinent to the topic, but how do you place a photo on the left side next to your name?

Thanks,

You have to buy a separate DVD player, the one that comes with the car is only for DVD Audio CD's so it wouldn't work... Maybe someone will hack it in a year or two, but I doubt that happening..

Besides if you get a new DVD Player, than you can use it as a MP3 CD Player, which displays ID3 Tags on your Navi Screen :wow: !

Thanks for the thread! I think I would opt for a rear view camera before opting for the backup sensors. The Acura camera is too big and obvious. You can barely see the camera in the 04 Toyota Sienna.

THANKS!!! That AV-Navi device is COOL! I like the fact that it allows me to be able to keep the factory look of the existing navigation screen. Thanks for all the great info!! This is plenty good enough for me. Now I don't even have to complain about the TL not having an Mp3 player. It seems to take care of everything. I wonder what the reception for the tv is like.

Crappy reception when moving, it is ok when stand still in city. If u search TSX and especially MDX sites for this device u will find tons of writeups, installs, and pics. You can do so much w/ it/ For alsmot the same price as parkign assist the unit puts u in a much better boart. My prob is where to mount eh camera and what type of camera so it is no obvious and not stolen or broken

Hmm...I read it and it said that sound would be fed via a FM modulator. I guess that means that you wouldnt be able to utilize the 5.1 sound.

That sux. So the sound wont go directly through the factory system huh? Are there any competitors or other installs of this same system that have the sound directly connected to the factory system.

As far as what type of camera to get, it seems like any camera will work. There are a lot of small spy cameras that can be found online. Hopefully one of those should work. There's an example of a lexus using it on the trunk.

You dont have to use FM Modulator, you can get a AUX Cable and hook it up to your Audio System, but you just have to wait for a company like Blitz to come out with a adapter like this..

It is illegal in most states to have a video display in view of the driver (much to dangerous). That's why all the factory installed systems are only viewable from the back seat.

Which, of course, you'll also be getting a ticket for!

The first time someone plows into me, with a movie playing on their Navi- I'm beating them to within an inch of their life.

HERE'S AN IDEA - WHAT DO YOU GUYS THINK...
I HAVE AN '03 CL WITH NAVIGATION AND WANTED TO HOOKUP MY PS2 TO IT. THE BEST IDEA I COULD COME UP WITH IS A RCA TO RVG CONVERTER (ABOUT $35 ON EBAY), CUT THE HEAD OFF AND SPLICE IT INTO THE CAR INPUTS. << I THINK IT SHOULD WORK, IT DOES ON THE ALPINES, PIONEERS, KENWOODS, AND SONY'S AT WORK (I THINK ACURA IS AN ALPINE). LET ME KNOW...THANKS

Hey Guys,
let me start by saying this, Cops are not stupid.
A police officer does not need to catch you watching DVD in the front to issue you a ticket, just a glance while driving and any indication of a monitor screen (TV or DVD player) in the front and you get a ticket.
Before, when i was in the academy, we were not taught all that, but all the new youngsters know that, because they are drivers, cars owners and have some sense on intelligence.
Nevern think that if an officer saw you watching a movie inthe front and moved behind you and you switched to Navi, he or she will let you be, we get trained on how to look in the car and find the wsitch it's self.
I pulled over a Black SUV in Vienna, VA couple of months ago, because the driver was watching a movie while driving, and had no passengers, and once i turned on my take down lights and pulled him over, he turned it off and tried to tell me that it was a separate screen for his portable Navi, I asked him to get out of the car and found out that he did have a portable Navi, but also had a DVd player.
I confronted him with that and wanted to give him a warning for all that, but he denied everything and dared me to prove it.
Well, he left with a reckless driving ticket and -6 points of his driving record, after calling our patrol tech.
Just remember, if you have technology, we have unti- technology, and everytime people step ahead, we all make the same step up.
Don't think that i'm against you guys, i'm with you, i even have a monitor in the front, but I just know how to play both ways.
Good luck to everyone

Thank you for the info. It sounds like you are in the know. Do you know if you can legally view the image from a rear mount camera while you are traveling forward? What about a front mount camera?

Would there by any chance be a website that lists where it is illegal to have tvs up front or dvd players in the car. Or is that everywhere in the US?

I dont know if that would work or not, but I suppose since the Navi is RGB and all you need is RCA Inputs..

Cops are d|cks (you included). As you've explained it, you gave a guy 6 points on his driving record for having a movie on while driving. Big effing deal. Find something better to do with tax dollars than bust some guy with a movie on in his car.

Lesson learned: don't lie to a cop to try to avoid a fine - they might take it "personal" and throw a tantrum.

Thumbs up Too bad

NSWAGAR,
if cops are ****s to you, well thats fine with my, but that does not eliminate the fact that I WILL pull you over if you are playing a movie inthe front.
I'm a Police officer, I'm not a baby sitter, I'm not here to pat on people or baby sit them, and believe me, I'm the nicest in the depertment, you should see my supervisor, who believe in one God (God of tickets), not a long time ago, he issued 150 tickets in one day, and they are all 10/4 (right tickets no doubt).
There is an reaction for every action, so you want to do whatever you want without being punished???
Many times when your in trouble, you look and wish that there is a police officer, just because you need one.
And the person who i issued the ticket to, was rude and a big challenger, because like i told him, we are all drivers and car fanatics, and all he had to do was not play the movie while driving, and i never asked him to remove it, but he almost sweared that he didn't play anything, and i hate it when people try ti insult my intelligence, just because I'm on officer, and it seems that you'll be getting it soon, I do NOT **** around on duty.

btk413,
I hate to tell you this, but you cannot view images in a rear mounted camera while the vehicle in on the move, because it's exactly like watching a movie, and its a distractor while driving.
let me put this way, anything that shows real life in the front is illigal (not in all states and may check with your jurisdictions) and states in the East coast are very strict about that.
You can have a camera in the rear or the front and have no problem as long as it does not display pictures while your driving 10 MPH or more, because you'll never travel backwords for a speed that exceeds that, and you won't need in the front because thats your main view.
A lot of poeple think that its illigal to have a monitor inthe front, technically, that is not correct, the key is not to have a monitor in the view of the driver, that why you can have a screen for the front passenger built into the visor.
And i let a lot of people go when they have monitors in the front, but tilted towards that passeger.
Any questions, I'll be glad to answer.

P.S:
I'm talking about State laws, not Federal laws, so it might not apply on your state.
Tell me where you live, and I'll see if I can help.

Wow, thanks for all the great info

I gather from what you said that it is perfectly legal to have a backup camera installed that activates when you are in reverse. I was gonna get that to use as a parking assist w/o the stupid beeping thing and the 4 holes in the bumper.

Also I was going to install the DVD/ MP3 player as well cause I end up picking a lot of people up and just have to sit and wait what appears to be half my life. So it is fine to have the system and watch it when the car is completely parked? Just can't ahve it activated when in motion? THis is all I would do anyways, just to pass the time, but I am sure plenty of officers would argue that you can't even have the system in the car that can be displayed where the drive might see it, even if only watched when in park. Appreciate all the info. Thanks

Qatar, not sure where/if you are an actual police officer, but there are several cars that offer night vision cameras that allow you to see moving images from the front of the vehicle.

Only Cadilac

Why would i pretend to be one??
I know that one car manufacture offers night vision, and that is Cadilac, and that system is not reliable, and when we come to realityu, it DOES NOT display ALIVE images, and what I mean by that is something in a movi display, night vision and DVD are two different things.
i have seen the night vision in the academy before, one of our cruisers have that, and like I said, they are two different things.
Also night vision is right in your eyes view, and it will not distract you, unlike DVD movies where you have to turn your head and watch.
Not to forget that night vision is to help you see and avoid accidents, not to entertain you.
Night vision also lowers your insurance rate, because its a safety feature, but if you go and try to insure your car and a front DVD screen monitor is detected by the insurance personnel, believe me man, it WILL be put as a note, and you'll get a high rate.

You can call me department and check if I'm a real officer or not.

Please don't think that I'm against you or anybody here, I'm unlike a lot of people (officers), because State Police don't pull you over for nothing, and believe me, in our department, if you get pulled over, you are %100 sure getting a ticket.
County and City police officer have a lot of laws to enforce, Federa, State, City and County laws, but for State, we only enforce Federal laws, which means less violation codes.

Yes Moreace,
you can have it in the car and won't have a problem at all.
You can play anything while parked, and also can install the rear camera.
Put in mind that many car manufacture offer that: Acura MDX, Infiniti QX45, Lexus RX330...
So, the answer is yes you can have both, just rememeber not to rely on the screen to park or reverse, because its to help you park or back up, and not to forget about the side view mirrors.

Qatar, thank you for all the great information. I am sure I am not alone when I say I appreciate what you do for a living. Tough job and life style! Thank you.

I assume it is legal to view a rear image at a stop light when the car is not moving, but still in a forward gear. Is this correct? Also my front mounted camera question was specifically intended for a night vision cam. Based on your previous comments it seems like this image would have to be in your line of sight of the road. So an image projected on the windshield or a display higher than most nav displays?
