Drove through puddle, engine is toast, now what?

I drove through a puddle in a walmart parking lot two nights ago and my car turned off once i got through the water. Today i got the call from acura once they got my car and they said the engine is shot and the part is 6200. Any suggestions on what to do now?

Don't they come with a bypass valve that should prevent that?

Sorry to hear that, but makes me glad i converted to stock air intake. I like the low end much more anyhow. Hope all works out well for you.... You gotta be very careful when having a cai. It is actually very dangerous!

We don't get a LOT of rain here, but it would be just enough to scare me.

why just contact other place like car-parts.com or ebay for a used Type S engine and get some one put in for fraction of the price.

Yes by pass valve can prevent that how ever I don't trust the dam thing at all it nothing but just a sponge that release water out, you have to buy it from AEM for $50 and then you have to cut your CAI where you think it might drain water at best then reattach the pieces together.

^ How low are your guys' CAI's? Mine is about mid front bumper. That's still like, what, 18 inches from the ground minimum? Who drives through a foot and a half puddle? Not saying the OP did but damn, there's no way I'd drive through that deep of a puddle with any car. The floor level on the TL and most cars is only maybe 12 inches off the ground at most so you'd essentially have to drive through a puddle that's deeper than the floor of the car itself to hydrolock your CAI. Again, depending on exactly how low the CAI is placed.

the puddle was definitely deep enough to hit the CAI, it did not look that deep as this was at night and in a recognizable spot in the parking lot, i figured the puddle cant be that deep. One i went in it dropped down nd it seemed better to keep going than attempt to back out

OP, on the CorvetteForum I have seen many instances of hydrolocking being covered by the insurance company. You may want to give this a try.

^the RL?
no. if he and I were thinking alike, you would have to do a Frankenstein motor. taking pistons and the crank from the 3.5 RL

pretty sure that's not how the bypass valve works.

When the filter becomes water logged the valve then becomes "the filter" and begins pulling air from up by the throttle body. It's actually a pretty ingenious and simple idea.

Curious, would warranty cover this? Let's say you were stock or is it not possible on a stock?

^Pretty much not possible but either way I'd say no warranty won't cover a hydro-locked engine. Because obviously there is no failure...just ignorance. Lol

Yeeahh, probably don't want to get the OP's hopes up. If it was the stock intake, chances are good that they'd cover it. Modded/aftermarket parts that probably contributed to the hydro-lock or caused it completely? They're going to fight not to cover it and win.

Injen Hydro Shield...may not be 100% protection for your CAI, but IMO it should significantly reduce the chances of it happening to almost nothing if you even have a little bit of of sense. OP misjudged and that happens, but if you drive slow through deep enough water and it still happens with one of these on the filter, you'd really only have yourself to blame.

FWIW...YMMV

no chance on warranty even if the factory intake box were installed. warranty doesn't cover acts of nature or driver negligence.

you can get a used tl-s engine for about 2500 off car-part.com.

but i hope you have full coverage insurance because they should total out your car..or pay for a new/used engine. it should be completely covered.

ECU is different, transmission is different.

I'm sure if you had deep pockets, you could make it work.
but it would be simpler to do a Frankenstein motor or swap it for the same year

Sorry to hear it man. Hope it all gets sorted out fast and cost-effective!! Curious though, what kind of intake is it? My 05 TL came with a Fujita CAI. Just want to know "how low can you go"? :P
