I recently inadvertently shifted into 'L' and drive perhaps 80 yards. Subsequently, I saw the engine-shaped warning light come up on the centre dial. This went on for some seconds, but has not re-appeared. Anything to worry about?

That is odd, see if you can replicate it. How fast were you going? L should keep the car in the highest RPM range as it can, but it will shift when necessary...
