Is this dent a candidate for paintless dent repair?

Or do I need to go to a body shop? I've had my beauty for less than 3 weeks! Well last night my wife wants ice cream and so she sends me to Wal-Mart. I park far away as usual and when I come out and start walking toward my car there are 3 carts stacked together leaning against the car. As I get closer I notice a huge dent and multiple little dents in the right rear behind the tire. I'm almost thinking that someone backed into the car and moved the carts against the car to hid what they did. The dent and damage is a lot to have been done by a shopping cart.

Well my question is this, would this be a candidate for paintless dent repair or do I need to go to a body shop? I would prefer to pay out of pocket to a paintless dent guy rather than having it go to a body shop and forever being on a car fax that my car was in an accident.

Any thoughts? (This really pisses me off by the way!)

umm sorry bro but no paintless dent removal will do that justice. you are going to have to have body work done. it may be the pic but it appears that the fender has some paint chips in it. good luck man.

They're right. The larger dent above and to the right could have easily been popped out but with the crease and 2 folds it's a bodyshop job. Good news is it isn't any worse and shouldn't be a hard job at all

Sometimes you can't be too careful where and how you park your car. Other times these things still happen with all your precautions, there's nothing you can do about it. Good luck, take it to the right shop and it'll look new again, don't worry.

Man, that really sucks! The big one will pop, but not the creases. And I don't see how a shopping cart could do that much damage unless it was moving at about 70mph.

Wrinkles/creases cannot be handled by paintless dent repair. They gonna have to take a hammer to it, knock it straight; use body filler. and then repaint

Weird how theres no scratches, or scuffs if another car ran into you. Do i smell someone kicking it

That's what it looks like. Also, the more I look at it, it looks like there was more than one impact.

Thanks for the responses. I'm trying to work with the local Wal-Mart (they're such freakin' idiots) and get the security tape to see what really happened. All I know is that when I got to my car there were 3 carts stacked together and leaning against the car. I have no idea what happened. Hopefully if I can ever get my hands on the security tape I can find out what happened.

You did call the cops and file a police report right ? I do not see how WALMART is going to help you. They have policy and procedure to follow, showing you video tapes doesn't sound like part of the plan.

Thanks for the thread, and of course all the replies. Tomorrow I am going to post a dent I have been curious about to get some opinions.

Surely let us know how this turns out.

If you plan to fix it through your insurance, this may be considered comprehensive claim, since it happened when you were not driving and not your fault.

Comprehensinve claims will not cause your rate to increase, at least. Now, it depends on your deductible if it's smaller than the actual cost of repair.

For me, I made my comprehensive deductible $100, since it also covers many things (cracked windshield, etc)

At least, somebody had ice cream, dude!

ouch that sucks. Do what the guy above says and check with your insurance and see if getting it under comp. wont raise your rates. otherwise, just talk to a bunch of shops and let them know you are paying out of your own pocket, they usually lower the prices for you that way. i feel your pain

Well here's the resolution...I called my insurance company and took it in for a damage estimate this morning. The damage evaluator agreed with me that there is no way that a rolling shopping cart could have caused that kind of damage. He agreed that the cart had to have been pushed or something else happened, so they are going to cover it as a vandalism claim! Which is great because that means it's a comprehensive claim and my comp deductible is only $100 bucks, plus the insurance company will pay for a rental, so looks like I'll be out of pocket $100 bucks and one ding on the car fax report!

i dont remember the exact numbers, but i know shopping carts have been clocked at around 30-40+ mph, which in numbers could probably cause some damage. if i can find the study i will post the exact numbers.

but anywho, glad it is getting fixed

I totally agree, unfortunately it's the closest store to us. And I did park far away! But I'll tell you this, never again will I go to that Wal-mart!
