Debate: 6MT or 5AT for 2007 TL Type S

I have been reading this forum for the last 6 weeks and finally decided to register since I have 99% sure I am in the market for a 07-08 WDP Type S. I'm trying to spend less than 28k out the door so its been taking a while.

I found this TL-S

http://www.autotrader.com/fyc/vdp.js...e=b&make=ACURA

They were able to drop it down to 26.8k+ fee = 29.4k out the door. I know I'll be able to probably knock out another 1k if i were to purchase it.

this car is a 6MT. I have never owned a MT before and have been driving an auto prelude for the last 10 years. I know how to drive MT because I used to be a valet driver and I drive my brother's Integra GSR once in a while but I can smell that I roast his clutch sometimes because i'm just not used to it.

I'm sure if it was my DD, i would be able to perfect it. anyways. What do you guys think? Should I go for the 6MT or wait and stay with the 5AT. My other concern is that my gf doesn't know how to drive MT but I can always teach her I guess. What do you guys think? need some advice.

I think you should get whichever you prefer? The MT is quite a bit quicker but the TL is a luxary car so it really doesn't matter how fast your going you'll still be riding in style .. I personally have a 6MT and I have had loaners with 5at and there is deffinately a noticeable different but it comes down to what you want. No one can make your choices for ya.

Apparently WDP 6MT is the rarest combo for a TL-S so that is a find!

As far as AT vs. MT....depends on the type of driving that you do most and how much you like shifting...I think that only you can answer those questions.
But I will say that, for me, 6MT is the most rewarding way to drive....but yeah, it can be a PITA in traffic. Especially with the high clutch take-up of the TL-S...

Wow, I didn't know that. I would have thought it would be a manual transmission in a Redondo Red Pearl Type S, or something like that.

Anyway, it seems like a good deal-especially since it's got the Aspec Kit on it.

Get the 6MT. Yes it's a pain in traffic but believe me you'll have so much more fun then the auto! The TL is a different animal with the manual. Test drive both and you'll see for yourself.

6MT imho but I think you need to drive both ASAP and decide for yourself.

I'll probably have to drive both to decide. The only reason I'm so picky is that this next car will have to last me a while. I'm not the type who will switch cars every couple of years. The last year I had, I put 10 years in it. This will be my first car to purchase and I just want to make sure I pick the right one. I honestly don't mind 5AT or 6MT but I don't want to miss out because I want the best of the best. Given, I haven't driven either versions so my next step would be that.

I just want to see based on everyone's personal experience.

How much is the ASPEC kit? My second question is, is that a good deal?

Go with the 6mt. I bought my car not really knowing how to drive a stick and it took alot of frustration and practice before i got it down. But now, there's no looking back, 6mt is the way to go!

Perf. & fun wise, you should get a 6mt .. but seeing that you're from the bay area, 5at is a better choice for your DD ... just my $.02

I would say it is depedent on your commute (school / work). I personally have the 6MT but don't sit in bumper to bumper traffic at all. The 6MT is much more fun and in my opinion is really "driving." San Jose has some pretty decent traffic so bear that in mind.

I drove a 6MT for 11 months before I gave up and traded it in for a 5AT. I sat in traffic 1.5hrs each way to work and it was brutal in Chicago traffic. If you live in a rural area or dont have to drive in rush hour, 6MT is the way to go. City driving cant beat a 5AT and relaxing.

There is no "debate". The 6MT is the car to have.

Unless there is some specific reason you "need" an auto.

I have one of each. Mine's an '04 manual and my wife's is an '05 automatic. I get to make pretty direct comparisons whenever I want. My manual is quicker and because it is a manual, has much better throttle response which translates to a better feeling of engine torque.

As for driving a manual, learn how to do it correctly and I don't mean what may seem to be the right way. Here are two links which you might find helpful. In the first link, go to post #7, read what I wrote, then read the link. Also, read the rest of the first link's thread.

The second link is more advanced and talks about a very important skill which will play a huge part in helping your clutch assembly and synchronizers last a long time. Feel free to ask all the questions you want.

I was going to say the same thing except in 6MT Kinetic Blue Pearl. I figured KBP was easily the rarest color out of all Type S's. Obviously I dont know which tranny the car has but I actually see a fair amount of white Type S's where I have never seen a KBP Type S driving.

If you're looking for the no-compromise "best," 6MT is the way to go. But like others have said, if you have a commute and spend a lot of hours in traffic, it will get to be a PITA in very short order.
Otherwise, that looks to be a really nice car. 41k miles is a little on the high side for an 07, but if everything checks out it's hard to go wrong with a CPO.

Dude get the 6mt i was in your same same position a couple of months ago. All my cars were auto (2003 acura tl) never drove stick besides valet lol. The 6mt Tl is a blast to drive unless you do some serious city driving.

Traffic isn't bad in san jose..

Go for the 6spd. The TL is actually pretty easy to learn to drive for beginners. 6spd TL's are pretty rare, let alone a type s. If u can get your hands on one, go for it!..Good luck.

6MT

Way more fun to drive and hands down the better performer. Idk if you're into speed or what, but if you get the 5AT you will always wonder "how much faster would the 6MT have been?" If you get the 6MT, I doubt you're gonna wonder "how much slower is the 5AT?" lol. The 6MT is a blast to drive and I don't mind traffic to be honest. It gets annoying if it's stop and go for awhile, but other than that you can't beat 6MT! Well, unless maybe 7MT .

All in all tho it comes down to your preference. I'm a big stick guy [no homo]; if I see a nice car in a parking lot I'm the type to check if it's MT. Not that I degrade AT drivers, I just prefer stick. Up to you man, whichever choice you choose don't look back and happy driving!

thanks for all the response. I think 6MT is the way to go!!!!!!!! I have a 30 mile commute which isn't that bad. There are some stop and go but nothing too crazy. Now I just hope the car will still be there when I gather up my down payment.

I never knew this, but apparently the WDP with a 6MT, is one of the rarest combinations around! Aside from that, 6MT hands down. You'll thanks all of us, later.

I'll keep you guys updated. This is going to be my first time buying a car. I have 5k down so hopefully that's enough for a downpayment and i hope my loan gets approved.

anyone know honda/acura financing? Is it easy or hard? I have a 710 credit score.

I believe AHFC wants a credit score of 725 or higher for their top tier financing, but I could be wrong. This is what I remember from when I bought my car.

Another thing is, your auto credit score, and your normal credit score are two different things.

With a 710 credit score you will have no problem getting approved for that loan. Not sure if you will get the absolute best rate as mention in the above post but overall very good score. If you want the car they will approve you.
As for your down payment that is plenty. They would even approve you with no money down but ofcourse you would be looking at about $100 bucks more a month car payment without the $5,000 down payment. Its all up to you really.

I would add (if it hasn't been mentioned already), if you haven't driven an MT car in a while or if you've never driven one, the TL isn't going to be a particularly easy car to learn. I'm a very experienced MT driver and I found the clutch rather counter-intuitive when I bought my '07. Clearly you can get used to it, but just be prepared for some frustration as you figure it out.

I like manual transmissions. So I bought the 6mt. But it depends on what you prefer.

This particular manual (type s) isn't the greatest to be honest. Clutch pedal feel is pretty numb. The gas pedal is the copycat BMW type, meaning it is attached to the floor and works as a lever. So depending on how high you are pressing on the gas pedal, sensitivity varies. That may have something to do with the weird gas pedal feel. Makes it more difficult to get a consistent feel between the clutch and gas. Weird because I don't experience this when driving manual BMWs.

Def take some getting used to.

Agreed. I know this is a rare combo (6MT/ color combo), however I walked away (after tax) at $30,225 a year ago and the car only had 3,750 miles on it. Granted, it was a 5AT/NBP. That could be because this car is a 6MT, but I'm still thinking you can do a little better on the deal, JMHO.
