De-Badging

Don't want to start a completely worthless thread, but here I go anyway...

1. What are people's thoughts on de-badging??

2. What is the easiest/safest way to do it.

Thanks all

Badges? We don't need no stinkin' badges. Do it quick, and talk to the car to distract it, so it's not anticipating the pain.

I think it looks bad without the badges, and I don't understand why people do that in most cases.

I always assume that people who debadge are doing it because they want people to think they have the top of the line, when in fact they don't. This way, they can pretend they are richer than they are. It seems very immature. Like on a BMW 525 or a Mercedes E 320, the guy takes the badges off so it might be a 540i or a E500.

So, on a car like ours it looks blank or vacant to remove the badges. Maybe its just one of those fads that a 39 year-old like me just doesn't get. Kind of like putting a fat noisy tail pipe on the car to get more attention from other guys in their cars.

Just my opinion...the guy asked...no need to flame me!

Thanks everyone for the info so far....I will constult the other threads.

As to the message above from Acuraddict, I agree that a lot of people like to take crappy cars and try to make them look like they spent more money than they did. That is definately a cheezy move. Since all of us have the same model, I hope that removing the badges doesn't connote the same idea.

De-badging does not make a lower trim car look like a higher trim car. Come on. Whether it's a Merc, or an Acura, or a BWM, there are other subtle cues that distinguish one trim from another. Re-bading to a higher trim level, now THAT's lame. I once saw a nice MB S500 sitting in a parking lot. The guy welded two chrome pipes under his rear bumper to emulate the S55 look. Too bad there weren't any mufflers attached to the pipes. What a great mod to a $90K car.

The easiest way to de-badge?

Have the dealership do it upon purchase. No additional charge. There is a pic of my car debadged within my photo gallery.

I think it looks great!!

Third gen Tl's don't have to worry about it, but the type-s cars always run the risk of getting their type-s badges jacked by kids. If you are lucky they will just rip it off instead of using a screwdriver and mess up the paint. That was the primary reason I took mine off. While I was at it I decided just to take everything off to see how it looked. It's been that way for the last 1.5yrs.

Another plus is there are no sharp edges to catch a drying towel and makes waxing very easy. I guess one other gee wiz factor would be that it keeps everyone guessing :-)

If you decide to go for it just heat it up with a blow dryer then slide some dental floss behind it. There will probably be some residue left so use some WD-40 on a rag and gently wipe it clean. Just remember to clean the wd-40 off asap when you are done. a good coat of wax wouldn't hurt either.

I like the de-badged look.
I just think it cleans up the rear of the car - it's just advertising after all.
I don't do it to hide what model I have, I do it because I think it looks better.

Personally, I just removed them by putting a knife carefully under the corner and lifting. I was very careful not to let the knife touch the paint, or the oposing corner to dig into the paint. The letters are fairly sturdy, so this is easy to do. After that, I just pulled off the remaining glue.

Good luck, hope you find out what look you want.

Got to agree with Nickpoore on this -- it looks so much cleaner, especially with the TL's rear end. Heck, everyone's gonna know what it is if they really car by looking at the big A on the Grill.

Personally, I"m waiting for a billet grill for the TL.

cars are designed without badges when they sculpt the exterior.

I just used dental floss, it was pretty easy. I didnt use a hair dryer and it was like 50 degrees outside. THe floss broke like 10 times, but it was all fine. afterwards just roll up the rest of the adhesive, it comes right off.

The TL and TSX look so similar to me ,it's hard to tell them apart at first glance,so if you like that cleaner look and don't mind people wondering if you have a TSX ,or a TL .. WHO CARES?

Okay now the real question everyone wants an answer to: what kind/brand of floss should you use to debadge?

I used nylon for kite flying, it doesn't shread and it's strong enogh. Used a hair drier to soften the glue, and after 'cutting' the glue with the nylon, there was no residue I could see.

proceeded to wax the car to make sure there was no residue at all... looks more like an audi now.

Mercedes, BMW, Jaguars don't add their brand name letters to their cars trunk, just the logo is enough - people know what it is...

Yeah, you know what? I'm kind of thinking about debadging too. I want to see how it looks without the "tl" and the "acura".

It would make sense in terms of car washes, and it might look cleaner without it. Anyone have pictures?

bolywood21,

Nice car, plus good house and nice MDX aside.

Did you debadge your MDX, too?

The acura emblem stays. I like the symbol, but don't like the words.
