Initially, when they had problems, Tustin Acura asked me if I had changed my ignition, and it baffled the hell out of me until I found out about the method they use to cut the key. It should be simple, really--if you follow the test in the instructions (put the key all the way in both ways), all the locksmith has to do is make a carbon copy of your existing key.
I believe the reason its working in the glove box is that it uses only 4 tumblers instead of the full 8 in the ignition...

good news. So I'm here at south coast Acura waiting for them to program my immobilizer on all my keys. The cut worked via trace! But not flawlessly I'd have to admit. Key works one sided in the ignition, but perfect in glove and door. Other than that it works so I can't be more satisfied. $75 for program and cut. Spoke with Ryan and sean at parts to knock the price down from $110. Thanks AJ!! Ytmnd

another member and crbnfbr got their keys working sucessfully. crbnfbr did his without a hitch, the other member had a key that required a little bit of attention to. I am still waiting to give the ok until I get the problem with ryan's key solved.

aj, thanks again for all your help this afternoon. if it helps at all, it seems to be the tips of the key that are the most problematic. Myself and the locksmith went back and forth about 8 times before the key would work on the door (both insertion and turn), and then insertion into the ignition. it was the tip sanding that got it to turn in the ignition.

I forgot to mention, after I sanded the tips, both sides work now in the ignition. I'll get around to sanding it some more later in the week to get the glove compartment and the inside trunk lock working as well.

only a couple more steps before I can rid myself of the old key and the big fat keyfob

cheers.

Here's my final update: after getting the key traced by two local locksmiths to try to fix Tustin Acura's cutting errors, I ended up with only a partially working key. My key works both ways in the door, and in the glove box, but it only works one way in the ignitions (with the keyfob buttons pointing towards me).

For the amount I spent on all of this, I'm terribly disappointed, and it's not even worth it to me the immobilizer programmed. (Running around town, driving back an forth to a dealer willing to touch it is about 10 dollars in gas on top of the programming charge.) Lol, if the switchblade was a little heavier, I could have a cool paperweight!

Has anyone in the Orange County/LA area had success with getting their milled keys cut correctly recently? It seems that we should find one reputable locksmith in the area who is adept enough to cut these keys properly without charging something exorbitant.

You can take it out, but it is a PITA, the three screws under the cover have tons of locktite on it, you will most likely end up striping the screws. I know I did on 3 keys and decided to redesign the CNC clamp jig to keep the little black housing. All you need to do is remove the 1 screw and the remote should come out.

you don't need to take off the entire housing. Wherever you get the key cut, you need to have them use a TRACING machine where they trace off your original key that you use. When the cut the key it will fit, but when they near the tip what they have to do is fold the back of the key in and just finish cutting the tip of the key. I have to update my site to represent that soon.

aj, looks like Atlanta locksmiths suck. I must have called 10 of them (no answer or out of service) ha! Finally got a hold of one and he told me it would be too expensive with him to reprogram the key and said I should go to a dealer....lol. great.

So I finally called Ed Voyles Acura (another dealership close by), and the guy was super cool and at first said he though it could be done for free since all I was asking for was the immobilizer to be reprogrammed, but then came back and said it would be $60! so Ed Voyles it is!

Ill let you know how it turns out this afternoon.

Reviving old thread. Csmeance you are the man. Took me way to long to give you props. Just got my key cut no problem at my locksmith. Went to the Acura stealership and they told me $180. I walked out before he finished asking me if i wanted to do it right away. Called the rest of the dealerships in my area and lowest was $107. Now i read that mom and pop locksmiths can do it got to start making phone calls.
