Question Cost of key fob replacement? Dealer quotes $200

My wife misplaced her key fob a few months back and we'd like to replace it. Dealer quoted $200 for a new one, where half is for the key and fob and half was for the cost of reprogramming the computer.

Any reports on whether this is the standard cost?

The $100 for reprogramming sounds suspiciously like a dealer add-on fee to me. Seems to me that any reprogram (if even necessary) would take 5 minutes.

Thanks,
Scott

And sorry for the post-- I know this one is out there, but 'fob' isn't an eligible search term.

Amazing how I searched for "programming keyfob" and in the first thread I found had this........................

PROGRAMMING THE REMOTE TRANSMITTER (KEYFOB)

Storing transmitter codes.
The codes of up to three transmitters can be stored into the keyless receiver unit memory. (If a fourth code is stored, the code which was first input will be erased.)

NOTE: It is important to maintain the time limits between the steps. Make sure the doors, the hood and the trunk lid are closed.

1. Turn the ignition switch ON (II)

2. Within 1 to 4 seconds, press the transmitter lock or unlock button with the transmitter aimed at the keyless receiver unit behind the driver’s side of the dashboard.

3. Within 1 to 4 seconds, turn the ignition switch OFF.

4. Within 1 to 4 seconds, turn the ignition switch ON (II).

5. Within 1 to 4 seconds, press the transmitter lock or unlock button with the transmitter aimed at the keyless receiver unit behind the driver’s side of the dashboard.

6. Within 1 to 4 seconds, turn the ignition switch OFF.

7. Within 1 to 4 seconds, turn the ignition switch ON (II).

8. Within 1 to 4 seconds, press the transmitter lock or unlock button with the transmitter aimed at the keyless receiver unit behind the driver’s side of the dashboard.

9. Within 1 to 4 seconds, turn the ignition switch OFF.

10. Within 1 to 4 seconds, turn the ignition switch ON (II).

11. Within 1 to 4 seconds, press the transmitter lock or unlock button with the transmitter aimed at the keyless receiver unit behind the driver’s side of the dashboard.

12. Confirm you can hear the sound of the door lock actuators within 1 to 4 seconds, then push the transmitter lock or unlock button again, or the code will not be stored.

13. Within 10 seconds, aim the transmitter (up to two additional ones) whose codes you want to store in the keyless receiver, and press the transmitter lock or unlock buttons. Confirm that you can hear the sound of the door lock actuators after each transmitter code is stored.

14. Turn the ignition switch OFF, and remove the key.

15. Confirm proper operation with the transmitters.

Thanks Lembowski

Sounds like a nice markup OR very very high hourly labor rates for the 2 minute procedure.

Post-script:

Spoke to the manager & tech and the above short procedure is true for the fob.

If you're adding a replacement key along with the fob (as we are doing) they have to hook up to the computer and reflash so the anti-theft bits in the key will match. Tech says that start to finish it took 45 minutes. Still a high hourly rate, but not outright robbery.

Wow....that is a bit too much for what i paid for. I paid about $120 for a new set of remote and key plus to reprogram the key that was just made, had the dealer program the remote for me less than a minute. Same way how "lembowski" explained it but you don't have to wait 1 to 4 seconds intervals.

Just repeat the steps 3 times: Turn the ignition switch ON (II) and press the lock button

i programmed a third fob before, so it didnt have Driver 1 or 2 memory. So if I program another fob (a fourth) , it would be considered Driver 1?

No prob. I programed my Accord remote so I know these steps work.

2k5_AcuraTL not sure about the multiple remote thing. I have my d1, d2, and my Accord fob has my valet transponder in it. So I'm not sure what happens after that

Somebody is already looking into it. You can search for the thread, but even he said it would be smarter just to wait for the 07 fob to come out which is the same as the rdx's

I was just quoted $160 by Rallye Acura.

I wanted a spare in case I lock myself out, so I just needed a key to unlock the door, not start the car. I had one made up for $4.

To reprogram remote fob for Acura follow steps already said before, in case of the key and immobilizer needs to be programmed thru the computer to the pcm only Acura can do it because you need hds from honda/acura or if you buy it from Ebay but that is all at your own risk
