Convert non-navi to navi
Convert non-navi to navi
Guys I just bought my first TL an 04 Athercite M., Auto wanted the 6MT but didn't opt for it, way too much traffic and driving down here in Miami. I went from a Eclipse GST to the TL.
I would like to say this car moves like butter....Excellent car for the 3 days that I have had the car.
Now I feel that I should have gotten the Navi.....
I was wondering if anyone has thought or done a convertion from non-navi to navi. I was thinking if a found a TL in a junk yard...which could possibly happen with the navi still intact or found it somewhere....if it would be a hard thing to install?
Would there be too many components to install?
I am just wondering.....

yer talking the dead-reckoning gyro's, the sun sensor for the climate control, the gps antenna in the rear deck, dvd deck and wiring in the trunk, buttons to the steering console for the voice control. probably the microphone in the top console, tho that's probably already there for the HFL, more wiring to integrate the navi voice into the radio. more buttons on the dash where the non-navi doesn't have them for nav control.
oy.. that's a buncha work.

first off congratulations on the new purchase. there have been other threads that discussed this and no one has attempted this to date. this topic comes up way too often and no one really has a definitive answer. we all know that it could be done, but just how much work and money would be involved. someone priced out the parts list and had it at well over the $2K price difference for the nav and non-nav TL. Then there is how proficient you are in electronics and capable of doing it yourself. if you are going to have someone else do it then that means more $$$. another important note is that the navi version adds other features such as voice control, sunlight adjustment and XM display to name a few. i am not familiar with the wiring harness of the TL but like all other cars this harness should be a nightmare to figure out. i am sorry to say that it would have been much cheaper to get the car with nav in the beginning. i also doubt that you will find too many 04 TL's with nav in the junk yards cause its still relatively new. good luck with the car whatever you decide to do.
I am new to Acura's so I don't know too much yet about Acura's, but the car I traded in for my Acura was a BMW 540 with factory Nav, and I know on BMW you could retro fit a non nav car with nav. So I would imagine it would be basically possible, but the problems are getting a hold of the parts.
For BMW you can get a hold of the TIS and ETK disks which are the parts disk and general "fix it" disk that all the BMW mechanic use world wide. That is what the BMW owners used to figure out how to do it. The only problem was the parts you need cost between $3,000 and $4,000 and only a few dealerships would sell you all the parts you needed.
If Acura also has some sort of CD Rom set that the dealership mechanics use to diagnose, fix, and order parts that might help answer the question more effectively.
Hope this helps in some little way.
