Considerations for possible 05 TL Purchase
Considerations for possible 05 TL Purchase
Hi there...I've just joined Acurazine. I am considering an 05 TL w 36K miles. Mostly city miles used for commuting. I checked the car visually and looks great. However, given the age of the car I'd like to learn more about what I should expect in terms of wear/tear, what repairs may be needed soon, any other potential areas that I need to think about before I make a final call on this.
I plan to have the car inspected if I move fwd and the current owner has already done the 30K service. I plan to run a CarFax report on the vehicle and will review the 30K service to review what work was done on the car. Car is in Pac NW.
Appreciate any guidance members can offer re: what else should I be thinking about as I contemplate this further.
Thx

i have an 05 MT...51K. original owner. no major issues. regular maintenance, tires, brakes etc. only issue i had was a prematurely worn front axle, replaced at 50K under ext warranty thru my insurance. otherwise, solid car. with only 36K...damn...take it. make sure it doesn't have any skeletons in the closet (ie major accidents). other issues for the car would be covered in the many threads already posted by others. follow the maintenance minder in the car (assuming it was followed by the original owner) as there is no real maintenance by mileage for this car except maybe the timing belt around 105K (which the car will tell you).
go for it if the car looks good and no issues. good luck.

Thx TLtrigirl and Vegas TL for your input. As there are so many discussion groups on the TL, are there any specific ones that you've come across that you can include the link to so I can read these and learn more about others' experiences w an 05 TL?

well...the big ones are the cracked dash issue (which i don't have...knock on wood), the AT transmission failure issue (i have a MT-only the cranky 3rd gear issue...)...run a search, for cracked dash (huge thread on this one) and the transmission (another huge thread) and it should get you there. other than that, the other issues seem to be individual in nature (like my axle issue with 50K). there are other little things i believe, check the 3G garage, as many of the common issues, recalls and TSBs are listed there as well. narrow your search criteria down under advanced search to the 3G TL discussions. for the most part the car is solid if maintained properly. it is a honda. there are a lot of people on here with over 100K on their cars without major problems. develop a relationship with your dealer (hopefully you have a good one to go to) and make nice nice with them and they just might help you out if anything major does occur.
hope this helps. bottom line, its hard to go wrong with this car unless the vehicle you are considering has been abused in its previous life, as with anything. good luck.
I just picked up a 2005 auto TL with 26,2xx miles a few months ago, great car, and from what i've seen/read they are really reliable. as for maint, just do tranny fluid by 30,000 miles, and then up to you for anywhere from every oil, to every year, to ever 30,000 miles again. tranny sensors around 50,000 miles, and basically follow the schedule in the book.
mine felt kind of sluggish, so pumped up the tires, changed the air filter, and just changed oil to mobile 1 syn, feels better now, definately not a in my mind thing either...
